Smallville: Ageless

Lionel: "Parenthood. It's an interesting phenomenon, isn't it? The lengths we go to to protect our children."

There were transparent future parent vibes between Clark and Lana. Orphans themselves, they were immediately attached to the supposedly abandoned baby that they found in a field.

Two meteor freaks having a magical exploding baby who aged seven years every day should have been silly, but it wasn't. The story was actually surprisingly poignant. Gold acting stars for Tom Welling, who did a fine job here with Clark's attachment to Evan, and his desire to be a father to him. And for the first time, the possibility that Clark will never have his own children (for obvious reasons) was discussed.

In other parental news, Mumsy Genevieve and Daddy Lionel clashed, and she was no match for Lionel. He was no longer all charity and goodness, but Lionel has changed. He doesn't have the evil vibe that he used to have, even while committing murder. Is Genevieve dead? I bet she is. If so, Lionel killed her to protect Lex. Knock me over with a feather.

Bits and pieces:

— Evan's favorite book (although it made no sense that he could learn to read so quickly) was The Velveteen Rabbit. That book is so moving that it used to upset me when I was a child. And the story sort of related to Evan himself.

— It was Genevieve who got Lionel released from prison. It was hinted at previously, but I don't think it was stated outright until this episode.

— Every time he appears, John Glover's hair looks two inches longer. He really does have an amazing head of hair.

— The birth car in the teaser blew up, leaving a thirty-foot crater. A scientist got thrown out of the glass wall of the exam room. Two points.

Quotes:

Chloe: "I found an arrowhead in Evan's field once, but never a baby in a crater."

Lionel: "You know, I'm not accustomed to being summoned like a lap dog."
Genevieve: "Don't be silly, Lionel. I'd never allow you on my lap."

Three stars,

Billie

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.

  1. 7 Year Old Evan was played by Colin Ford, who plays Young Sam on Supernatural.

  2. Not one of my favourites. The story falls flat with me, although I take your point about Tom Welling's acting here. I think it's because I don't care about the Clark/Lana relationship and cringe at that thought of them being parents together.

The moment I love is when Martha points out that she couldn't have children, yet has a son. That was very lovely and Clark's face was so sweet.

  3. If I when Genevieve I would give Lex a big piece of cake, so that Lionel would have to make good on his promise and give me cake too! Obviously, I am a criminal mastermind.

  5. I like this one, a lot. I think it's beautiful that Clark's able to stay with him through the explosion
