Screen Actors Guild Awards 2013

Because there are not enough awards handed out this time of year, the actors feel the need to pat themselves on the back in the middle of it all. Tonight, they handed out the Screen Actors Guild Awards solely for acting. All the other aspects of making a movie or a television show are ignored. The thing I do like about these awards, however, is that some performances are nominated that the other awards tend to ignore.

There is no official host of these awards, which rather worked this year. The open was fun. Several actors gave very short talks about how they got into acting. My favorite was Hal Holbrook who told a great story about taking a “dramatics” class because he needed one more credit to graduate and there was no homework. Another interesting thing the show did this year was have the actors who actually acted in the movie present the movies nominated for best cast.

I was genuinely surprised at quite a few of the winners. There seemed be a certain amount of passing out an award to those movies/shows that deserve some form of recognition but have been overshadowed. More than once, my jaw dropped when the winner was read. And, the actors (I really wish there was another name for the statue) went to:

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture: The Cast of Argo
-- This movie is doing very, very well this season.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role: Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln
-- I’m pretty sure his Oscar is now a sure bet. A lovely acceptance speech in which he pointed out that it was an actor who murdered Lincoln. Biggest laugh of the night.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role: Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook
-- A big surprise, but what an articulate acceptance speech.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role: Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln
-- This was a pleasant surprise. I loved him in this movie, more than DDL, personally.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role: Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables.
-- Unfortunately, her speech was nowhere near as lovely as the one she gave at the Golden Globes.

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series: The Cast of Downton Abbey
-- Yippee!!!! I literally cheered this win. Phyllis Logan, who plays Mrs. Hughes, accepted the statue and Michelle Dockery looked simply stunning. Again, I say, Yippee!!!
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series: The Cast of Modern Family
-- Three years in a row. Surely, there’s another funny show on television.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series: Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad
-- Wow! I was very surprised by this as I expected Homeland to sweep everything again.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series: Claire Danes for Homeland
-- It was too much to hope that the show would be passed over all together, but she is brilliant in the role.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series: Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock
-- This was the eighth time he has won. It is really time for him to graciously decline the nomination.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series: Tina Fey for 30 Rock
-- At least she acknowledged that the show is going off the air.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries: Kevin Costner for Hatfields & McCoys
-- Interesting that the man can show up for the Golden Globes, but not this.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries: Julianne Moore for Game Change
-- sunbunny and I agreed that she had the worst dress of the evening.

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture: Skyfall
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series: Game of Thrones

Finally, Dick Van Dyke won the Lifetime Achievement Award. Bad cockney accent aside, I am a huge fan of this man and believe he deserves every accolade Hollywood can throw at his feet. “Aren’t we lucky to have found a line of work that doesn’t require we grow up?” How do you not love this man?

Not to be outdone, the Hollywood producers patted themselves on the back last night. The winners of the Producers Guild Awards were:

Theatrical Motion Pictures: Argo
Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures: Wreck-It Ralph
Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures: Searching for Sugar Man

Long-Form Television: Game Change
Episodic Television, Drama: Homeland
Episodic Television, Comedy: Modern Family

Non-Fiction Television: American Masters
Live Entertainment and Talk Television: The Colbert Report
Competition Television: The Amazing Race

Outstanding Sports Program: Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel
Outstanding Children’s Program: Sesame Street
Outstanding Digital Series: 30 Rock: The Webisodes

What do you think? Are you as surprised by some of the winners as I was? Let us know below.

  1. ARGO was in my opinion, the best movie of the year although I haven't seen Silver Lining Playbook yet. I will not watch the Oscars this year as Ben was not nominated for Best Director for ARGO. A total sham as proven by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and now Best Ensemble. The Oscars are politics as Leonardo has never won and maybe never nominated. It took Paul Newman 40 years to win. ARG!!
So back to the Sags....30 Rock finally off the air..sorry Baldwin you just aren't that great to keep winning, bye bye! Tina, love you but Sophia Vegara is over the top funny. Modern Family?? so, so but I'm not getting the humor any more. Damian Lewis..robbed. He is exceptional in the Homeland role. I actually love Homeland and the cast but I too am happy to see Downton cast win. As an ensemble..marvelous!!

  2. Love Dick Van Dyke. Brilliant remark. Huge smile for his "Bad cockney accent". Another smile for D Abbey's win. Oh, that one made you happy.

Sesame Street : I'm still amazed that this show is still on. It started in 1969 ! Wow. (63 for the Doctor and 66 for S Trek) Wow.

Modern Family : they almost lost me during the 3rd season. Quoting you : "Surely, there’s another funny show on television". Community (OF COURSE) and Suburgatory and New Girl are often better. And these are the ones that I watch. So I know there is way more out there...

Ohhhhhhhh, I have to quote you AGAIN here : "the Hollywood producers patted themselves on the back last night". Ladies and gents, I rest my case.

    (oops, did NOT watch it)

  3. Argo was good, but I'm not sure it deserved Best Ensemble. For me, the direction stood out much more than the acting. Still, I don't think they could reasonably give it to Les Mis, considering Russell Crowe.

ChrisB--I totally agree about Tommy Lee Jones. I loved loved loved him in Lincoln.

Sick of the Modern Family accolades. It's a funny show, but let someone else have a turn! They should have limits on the number of consecutive years shows can receive awards.
