Doux News: March 24, 2013

Doctors, and Kickstarter woes, and Lions oh my. This week we have Kickstarters and Premieres -- Doctor Who -- Suddenly I'm Interested -- An Unexpected Wedding -- Science Corner -- Arrows and Shades of Grey -- Dexter -- Pride and Prejudice -- and the Cat Video of the Week.

Kickstarters and Premieres

A Kickstarter page has launched in which G.I. Joe's Cobra Commander amusingly asks the public to help him raise the $21 million needed to rebuild the organization after being defeated by the G.I. Joes. Of course it isn't real, but you can find it here if you're curious.

Speaking of Kickstarters, Veronica Mars may be a reality, but at least two other shows have already been shot down for the same kind of revival. Joss Whedon said he's too busy for Firefly for the next three years. And the producers for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles have totally debunked any rumors of that show's return. The reason? Film rights. The current owners of the Terminator franchise have no interest whatsoever in anything other than the next Terminator movie.

Bates Motel ratings hit a record high, making it the most watched scripted debut for a series in A&E's history. (Josie's review of the premiere is here.) Bates Motel stars Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, and in a recent interview the show's creator said that the series may not follow the same history that we all know from the classic movie Psycho.

Doctor Who

Here's the Trailer for the new season of Doctor Who. No further comments on this one, except WooWho!

Of course there is Doctor Who drama as well. Yet again there are rumors of Matt Smith's departure from the series. This time, he is said to be leaving after the next Christmas Special. This dance they keep doing about his contract is building up confusion and curiosity for sure, but I'm starting to not care. If he doesn't want to do it, he should go and let someone else take his place, which is one of the beautiful things about Doctor Who.

Suddenly I'm Interested

That rumored Once Upon a Time spin off focusing on the Mad Hatter has been re-conceptualized. It appears as through the creators don't want to recast Sebastian Stan (which sounds like a good idea to me). So they are going to retool the series to have Alice be the lead. Which is even more interesting because she hasn't even been introduced in OUaT yet. This series may also come into conflict with NBC's Wonderland project, which is currently in development.

An Unexpected Wedding

Sir Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard, Professer X) is getting married (to 35 year old Sunny Ozell). They've been dating since 2009. Besides the age difference (Stewart is 72) the reason this marriage made news, beyond the fact that it's a celebrity marriage, is the fact that Ian McKellen (Gandolf, Magneto) is going to officiate the wedding.

Science Corner

So this isn't exactly about a funeral, as much as the end of one journey and the start of another. Voyager 1 after 35 years has finally moved beyond our Solar System, maybe. Unfortunately it's not quite in interstellar space. Exactly where the probe is now is still a matter of debate. Apparently it is still in a local region of space that we were totally unaware of before. Or it might not have left our Solar System at all (scientists are weird sometimes). What we do know is this: on August 25 the vessel launched in September of 1977 transitioned out of the Heliosphere which is our region (think of it a giant bubble) of space, that is dominated by the Sun's influence such as solar winds and charged particles. Scientists noticed a huge reduction in the number of those local cosmic rays shifting instead to galactic cosmic rays (those which originate outside our solar system). They say Voyager has reached something called the magnetic highway. The good news is we're still going to get stuff from it. The bad news is that in 2020 the machine will start shutting down its instruments, and by 2025 its power source will be exhausted.

In other science fiction, ahem, fact news, a team of researchers at Caltech (California Institute of Technology) have developed a micro chip that has a rudimentary immune system, and can actually re-route functions if a component burns out. Does this worry anyone else?

Dexter

Here is the first promo for Dexter season 8 which returns on June 30th. It's one of those teasers without any images from the show in it, but I thought it was cool. Beware those who haven't seen the series yet, it contains some spoilers.

Arrows and Shades of Grey

Along with the recently announced cast news of Emily Bett Rickards and Colton Haynes joining the Arrow team, recurring guest star Manu Bennett (Slade Wilson) has also been bumped up to series regular. The question is whether or not he will ever become the villainous Deathstroke. Oh, in much more depressing news, apparently Stephen Amell is in talks to star in 50 Shades of Grey. I have no words on this other than, please don't.

Pride and Prejudice

So here's my little contribution to the whole Pride and Prejudice revival here on the site. There is a wonderful Youtube series that's been going on for a year called The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. You can watch the first episode here.

Cat Video of the Week

And I'll say goodbye this week with my version of cat cuteness. I give you lions getting belly skritchies. Please don't try this at home... or on an African nature preserve.

Samantha M. Quinn spends most of her time in front of a computer typing away at one thing or another; when she has free time, she enjoys pretty much anything science fiction or fantasy-related.

  4. Not only is it depressing that Stephen Amell may be in 50 Shades of Grey, it is depressing that it is being made into a movie at all.

  5. Even when Tennant was the Doctor we had these "is he or isn't he leaving?" tabloid articles every year. Now that Matt has been around nearly as long as DT, they are speculating more than ever about his future on the show. Personally, I think he'll be back for season 8 and that will be it for him, Steven Moffat and Jenna Louise Coleman.

That's what I suggested may be happening in the comments of the review for the first episode.

    Same characters, different lives.

"In Elseworlds, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places -- some that have existed, and others that can't, couldn't or shouldn't exist. The result is stories that make characters who are as familiar as yesterday seem as fresh as tomorrow."
