This Week: Marvel takes over Netflix -- Roots remake -- Star Wars release date -- Doctor Who 50th Trailer -- Potential New Trek Director -- and more...

Marvellous News

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may still be having some ratings troubles, but it looks like that hasn't put Marvel, or their Disney overlords, off from conquering the small screen. This week it was announced that they'd be teaming up with Netflix to produce four 13-episodes series based on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, as well as a Defenders mini-series. All this will kick off in 2015 with the Daredevil series. As a fan of all of these characters I am beyond excited for this. No word yet on whether or not these series will crossover with each other but I expect that is likely given how connected these characters are in the comics. And it since it's on Netflix I hope Jessica Jones will be just as foul mouthed as she was in the comics. And played by Tatiana Maslany. I will not accept anyone else in the role. Maybe Alison Brie, but that would be it.

Someone call for a Doctor?

'The Day of the Doctor', Doctor Who's big 50th Anniversary Special, will air in just under two weeks. So it is rather strange that we're only getting a full trailer now. What is with that, BBC? Oh well, better late than never:

And here's the shorter version that somehow got leaked online early. BBC security, eh? Worse than Stormcage.

This week in really dumb decisions

History's plan to produce a remake of Roots. Yes, you read that correctly, they are planning to remake Roots. Let me guess, someone saw all the buzz 12 Years A Slave was getting and decided to cash in. If they are willing to do this it won't be long before someone at the network starts to think that what the world really needs is a contemporary take on Schinder's List.

The Hourman Cometh

Looks like The CW won't be getting tired of superheroes any time soon. Not content with just Arrow and the planned Flash spin-off, the network is currently developing a series based on the Golden Age hero, Hourman. That's right, Hourman will have a TV series before Wonder Woman even gets a movie.

Episode VII Updates

We now have a release date, December 18 2015, for J.J. Abrams's still untitled Star Wars sequel. Knowing super secret J.J. we won't know what it's called until halfway through the film, by which point everyone will have already worked it out weeks earlier anyway. Along with a title, we don't know who will star in the film or who they'll be playing. This means either that no one has been cast yet (unlikely with production soon to start) or Abrams is being needlessly secretive (highly likely). The latest name to be associated with the film, after Saoirse Ronan and Benedict Cumberbatch, is Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is sure to score a boat load of Best Actor nominations for 12 Years a Slave.

Attack the Trek

With Abrams off in a galaxy far, far away, someone needs to direct the next Star Trek movie and that someone just might be Attack the Block's Joe Cornish. I will support this only if Paramount give him complete creative control, starting with replacing all the actors with action figures.

Casting News

Alexis Denisof, one of my favourite Whedon alumni, has joined the cast of MTV's drama pilot Finding Carter, a coming-of-age drama that centres on Carter, a teenager (Skins' Kathryn Prescott) who learns that her mother abducted her as a child.

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan will guest star in an episode of Community while Skyler White herself, Anna Gunn, will appear on The Mindy Project.

Jason O'Mara (Terra Nova) will take the lead role in Complications, a medical drama for USA from Burn Notice creator Matt Nix.

Russian actor Yuri Kolokolnikov will play Styr, the Magnar of Thenn, in season 4 of Game of Thrones.

Nikita's Aaron Stanford has landed the lead role in Syfy’s pointless remake of Terry Gillian's time travel masterpiece 12 Monkeys. Amanda Schull (Suits, Pretty Little Liars) will play the Madeleine Stowe role.

This week in cats

Yeah, I got nothin'.

  2. Alexis Denisof got a series? Woo hoo! Please let it be one that I like!

I wish I felt better about this Marvel on Netflix thing. It feels like they're saturating the market. Although maybe if it's just the 13 episodes of each, it won't be too much?

  5. Ya know, an Hourman show could actually work quite well. It doesn't make it any less weird. He's definitely on the list of superheroes that when you ask someone who it is they go "Huhwha?"

I mean, if they're gonna go slightly obscure wouldn't it be safer to just use someone like Zatanna, Constantine, or like Plastic Man. Heck I'm fairly certain more people know Red Tornado than Hourman. Then again, I'm pretty sure you'd need a very high budget to make an effective onscreen Plastic Man.

I'm pretty interested in this Marvel Netflix thing, but I'm more in line with Billie's thinking. Heck they were probably better off just putting all four of the characters in one show from the get-go.

Word on the street a few months back is they're sorta fast-tracking a Wonder Woman series called Amazon. Haven't heard much about it recently though. They need to tread lightly after their last...attempt.

I don't see why they need to make a Roots remake. Why can't they just make another show about slavery? Pretty lazy stuff.

  7. I'm sure that those of you who are Doctor Who fans are already aware of this, but if not, the 50th Anniversary Special will be telecast simultaneously around the world. In the US, it will air on BBC America at 2:50 PM Eastern/11:50 AM Pacific on Saturday, November 23rd.
