People's Choice Awards 2014

The 2014 awards season kicked off last night with the People’s Choice Awards. These awards differ slightly from the ones that follow in that they are voted upon by the public, not by the winner’s peers.

Hosted by Beth Behrs and Kat Dennings, the opening montage was rather fun as nominees from the various categories showed up on the restaurant set of their show, 2 Broke Girls. The producers quickly went downhill from here. The jokes written for the presenters were, almost without exception, painfully bad. So bad, in fact, that several of them were visibly uncomfortable saying the words.

My other issue with this show is that the awards are all over the place. We didn’t get to see some of the important winners and, in fact, many (Favorite Movie, for example) were just announced as throw-aways. Most winners who were shown were gracious and lovely. Best of all, some of our favorites won:

FAVORITE NETWORK TV COMEDY: The Big Bang Theory
-- to which I say, absolutely. My favorite comedy right now thanks in no small part to
FAVORITE COMEDIC TV ACTRESS: Kaley Cuoco

FAVORITE DRAMATIC TV ACTRESS: Stana Katic
-- although some recognition that she is one half of the team is overdue, I am still bitter that Nathan Fillion wasn’t even nominated this year. But, I was a bit mollified by
FAVORITE TV CRIME DRAMA: Castle

FAVORITE ACTRESS IN A NEW TV SERIES: Sarah Michelle Geller
Because it will mean so much to so many of us, I reproduce the end of her acceptance speech: “But, also, for seven years, I had the privilege to be a part of one of the most amazing television shows and I’ve never gotten the chance to publicly thank them. The cast, the crew, and all the fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So, thank you.”

FAVORITE CABLE TV DRAMA: The Walking Dead
-- although I don’t watch this, I was amused by
FAVORITE TV ANTI-HERO: Rick Grimes, The Walking Dead
-- guess the anti-heroes are what we root for these days.

FAVORITE TV BROMANCE: Sam, Dean & Castiel, Supernatural
-- I wholeheartedly agree.

FAVORITE ON-SCREEN CHEMISTRY: Damon & Elena, The Vampire Diaries
-- they came up to accept the award together, acknowledging that they are no longer together. Gutsy.
FAVORITE SCI-FI/FANTASY TV ACTOR: Ian Somerhalder
-- although I have stopped watching this show, Somerhalder is still one of my crushes.

And, just because it is Sci-Fi/Fantasy, doesn’t mean many of us watch it...

FAVORITE SCI-FI/FANTASY TV ACTRESS: Kristin Kruek

  1. This is definitely an eclectic collection of winners. Some make you go, "Sure, that makes sense," while others make you go "Huh. Really?" The voting "people" apparently watch a lot more of the CW than the people at large (based on ratings). I wonder if the demographic that the CW generally targets is just more likely to be really passionate about their shows, or more likely to vote in these kinds of things, or both. It's interesting.

I must reiterate my complaint from the nomination phase: Rick Grimes is not an "anti-hero." "Flawed hero"/"reluctant hero" are totally different than "anti-hero." And I can't believe that in this, the year of Breaking Bad --- the show the people miss the most, apparently --- that Walter White did not win this award. Perhaps because he's a villain and not an anti-hero? :)

Billie, I chuckled when I saw the winner for Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actress. I could just imagine you shouting, "Are you kidding me?!" This show's miniscule audience must be incredibly passionate about it. How does Kristin Kruek beat Tatiana Maslany?

  2. Jess, :) Kristin Kreuk? Really? I know there must be a demographic that loves her, though.

I'm glad Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't running away from Buffy any more. Maybe she feels better about it now that there's some distance.
