New Shows: May 3-9, 2014

THIS WEEK: David Spade — Mount Everest — Jesus’ Wife — Comedy Awards — May Sweeps

The New Shows color code: red means don’t bother; blue means maybe; green means good; magenta means great.

SATURDAY, MAY 3
A Daughter’s Nightmare (Lifetime)
OMG EMT! (TLC)

SUNDAY, MAY 4
David Spade: My Fake Problems (Comedy)
I’ve never been a huge fan of this man, but his work on various shows has made me laugh. This hour did not. It was an appalling blend of ridiculousness and faux self-deprecating that made me wince more than once. Truly awful.

Everest Avalanche Tragedy (Discovery)
A few weeks ago, an avalanche on Everest killed sixteen sherpas. Ironically, a Discovery Channel film crew were on site filming an ascent. Instead, they filmed this tragedy. Terribly moving, it focuses on the men who lost their lives and the effect this will have on the sherpa community. I was stunned as I watched this. Not only was the photography second to none, but the men who experienced it were so affected they became nearly poetic. A grim reminder that nature is not always benign.

Hungry Investors (Spike)

MONDAY, MAY 5
The Gospel of Jesus’ Wife (Smithsonian)
A small fragment of papyrus has been found that quotes Jesus as saying “my wife…” As you can imagine, this has set off a storm of controversy among scholars and religious leaders. This hour long documentary discusses the authenticity of the fragment and finds it to be more likely than not authentic. If it is, the show goes on to argue, the idea of virginity and celibacy as the ideal will need to re-examined. Truly fascinating.

TUESDAY, MAY 6
Alaskan Bush People (Discovery)
Love and Salsa (NuvoTV)
Totally Tracked Down (Reelz)

WEDNESDAY, MAY 7
Most Infamous (Identification Discovery)

THURSDAY, MAY 8
American Comedy Awards (NBC)
This was one of the worst awards shows I have seen. The categories were about what you would expect, but it was the same shows over and over again. I mean, neither The Big Bang Theory nor any of its actors were even nominated in their respective categories. The other problem was the winners tried too hard to be funny, and failed. The highlight was the end when Bill Cosby got a lifetime achievement award. I watched this with my roommates and we all agreed that it was nonsense.

  1. I was amused by Spade on "Just Shoot me" a few years ago. Think I'll skip his special anyway. And wow that's a lot of season finales.

  2. And Supernatural! Their finale is this week, too. I don't know what made me think of that. :)

  3. Billie, unless they changed it, supernatural's finale is the 20th. Mentalist, supernatural and svu all go one week later than all the other shows (at least the ones I watch) and review Grimm! This show is so good!

  4. Thank you, Anonymous. I'm an idiot, because I knew that. My only excuse is that I just woke up and haven't had my coffee yet. :)

  5. I actually looked up Supernatural when I was compiling this list as I thought its finale was this week as well. Anonymous is right -- it is on the 20th.
