This week: Supernatural 200th -- Coming attractions (Frequency, Evil Dead, The Fall, Justified, Doctor Who) -- This week in casts -- This week in cats salmon

Supernatural 200th

Supernatural aired its two-hundredth episode this past Tuesday. My favorite shows never make it this long. Okay, Smallville did, but by then it was being kept alive by artificial respiration. Supernatural is doing much better than that. I wonder if it would have made it this long if the two leads hadn't been so young when they started? I mean, look at them in the pilot episode. They're babies!

Buddy TV did mini interviews of Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Mark Sheppard and Mark Pellegrino at a press event for the 200th. Even better, Variety did a wonderful article that includes interviews with practically everyone associated with the show, discussing all of the high points, decisions and major changes in the show over the past ten years. If you're a fan of the show, the Variety article is a long, in-depth must-read.

Coming attractions

Speaking of Supernatural, their current showrunner Jeremy Carver will be writing the script for a reboot of the 2000 Toby Emmerich movie Frequency as a new TV series. If you haven't seen Frequency, it's about a police detective (Person of Interest's Jim Caviezel) who connects via radio with his father (Dennis Quaid) thirty years in the past, and father and son work together in the different timelines to prevent a cascading string of tragedies.

If you're a Lost fan, there is a delightful little tie-in. Lost cast member Elizabeth Mitchell co-starred in Frequency as Dennis Quaid's wife and Jim Caviezel's mother, and Shawn Doyle played an evil character named Jack Shepard, which was also the name of Matthew Fox's character on Lost. Doyle later guest starred on an episode of Lost called "Eggtown".

Frequency is a good movie. Not great, perhaps, but definitely worth watching; I've seen it twice. It has a unique and touching premise, good acting and a satisfying ending, but it gets a little hard to track in the middle. If the pilot hits, it could turn out to be an interesting series. And I wonder if Supernatural will have to find a new showrunner for seasons eleven and twelve?

Evil Dead comes to the small screen! Bruce Campbell will reprise his lead role (could they do it without Bruce Campbell?) and Sam Raimi will produce. It will consist of ten half-hour episodes and will air on Starz next year.

The second season of The Fall begins airing in the UK this week, but won't be available in the U.S. until January 16, when its six episodes will air on Netflix. (Tell me again why the UK gets it first and we have to wait?) I did a first season wrap-up review last year.

Justified returns for its final season in January. Here's a little teaser. You think maybe the final season will be about Raylan and Boyd? (It had better be.)

The BBC has released a teaser for the Christmas episode of Doctor Who. What do you think? A bit dark?

This week in casts

-- Community has added Paget Brewster and Keith David to the cast of its Yahoo streamed sixth season.

-- Much loved Buffy alum Alyson Hannigan will guest star on The McCarthys Christmas episode.

This week in cats salmon

I'm just not as good as Josie Kafka at finding great cat videos. You'd think that it would be easy with all the cat vids out there to choose from, but no. So instead, I'm offering you something else.

Last Week Tonight starring the wonderful John Oliver finished its 2014 run this past weekend, and closed with a segment on -- get this -- a salmon cannon. You kind of have to see this one. It's marvelous. I mean, I thought the dogs as the Supreme Court would be hard to beat, but this is better.

(No actual salmon were harmed during the making of this video.)

Billie Doux loves good television and spends way too much time writing about it.

  1. With regards to why we in the UK get The Fall first I'd guess its cos it's a British made show like Doctor Who is meaning we'll always see it first before it airs anywhere else, I mean hey we always have to wait for shows to air over here or they never do so it's nice for once to make others wait too ;)

  2. The Variety article is fabulous. What a great trip down memory lane. It has inspired me to catch up with the show.

Guess I know what I'll be doing on a Friday night in January. Can't wait for the second season of The Fall. One of the best from last year.

  4. My cats love salmon. So This Week in Salmon could also be "This Week in Tasty Treats for Cats."
