This week: Twin Peaks returns! -- The CW renews a whole lot of shows, especially Supernatural -- Another possible Arrow spinoff -- Chuck stars in Heroes Reborn -- This week in cats

Returns, renewals, cancellations and a possible spinoff

Kyle MacLachlan was just re-cast as agent Dale Cooper in the new Twin Peaks limited series. I didn't realize he wasn't a lock. Did you all know that Josie Kafka just completed her Twin Peaks reviews this past summer? It's like the television deities decided to reward her with more, more, more.

When approached for comment, Ms. Kafka said, "I'm delighted to hear about the excellent yet unsurprising news about Special Agent Dale Cooper's return. I never doubted him for a second. Plus, Sheryl Lee, who played Laura Palmer and Maddie Ferguson, will return as well. Hopefully, the return of the key players means Frost and Lynch will focus on the supernatural mysteries of the Black Lodge, with perhaps a dash of noir mystery thrown in, rather than getting caught up in the soap-opera parody that so enamored them in the show's original run."

Speaking of the television deities rewarding us with more...

Doux News has been on hiatus since December because there were holidays, I was lazy, and the television news was sparse on the ground. So we were pretty surprised when The CW suddenly decided to renew eight shows very early: Arrow, Jane the Virgin, Reign, Supernatural, The 100, The Flash, The Originals, and The Vampire Diaries. We review five of these eight shows, so this is good news. (If you're not sure which, we don't review Jane, Reign, or The 100.)

I thought about going into a surprised sort of rant-like thing about a freaking eleventh season of freaking Supernatural, but maybe I shouldn't. Clearly, this is a show I'm going to have to keep reviewing until I start drawing Social Security, and possibly after. I should just smile and accept it, and continue to be grateful that I'm getting new episodes of a show I still enjoy writing about. (To celebrate the renewal, I did a new show graphic for my Supernatural show page. It's very blue.)

-- Community's sixth season now has a premiere date: March 17. On Yahoo something, I think. That means it's just on my computer and I won't be able to find it On Demand, right?

-- Game of Thrones returns on April 12. Sorry, no trailer yet.

-- Hannibal's third season won't begin until summer. No date yet.

-- Real Time with Bill Maher has been renewed for two more seasons. I was in his studio audience once way back in Real Time's first season, and I even got to ask Bill a question. Love him or hate him, he's certainly interesting.

-- Mad Men will end this year. The last seven episodes will start airing on April 5. It's been one of AMC's three monster hits, so what do you want to bet they'll try to come up with another spinoff?

-- Covert Affairs has been canceled after five seasons. I only watched the first season, and was mostly just disturbed by Piper Perabo and her character's eerie resemblance to Jennifer Garner and her character.

-- As we all suspected, because it was obvious, The CW is considering another Arrow spinoff, The Atom. They have this guy in a continuing guest role, and he once played Superman and everything so he has that superhero thing down already. Could be cool. Although I might be reaching overload with the comic book hero thingy. Even for Brandon Routh. And I like Brandon Routh.

-- We're tracking renewals and cancellations here, by the way.

This week in casts

-- Edward James Olmos, who ruled in more ways than one as Admiral Adama on Battlestar Galactica, will be appearing on Agents of SHIELD in a major recurring role. Woo hoo!

-- Constantine, which is still running even though everyone suspects it is going to be canceled, will feature Breaking Bad's Mark Margolis in an upcoming episode as a villain called Felix Faust. Ding!

-- This is sort of reverse casting news, but Steven R. McQueen is leaving The Vampire Diaries. It might be because they just can't quite decide what to do with the littlest Gilbert. Since this might be my last opportunity, I have to mention that every time I see his name in the cast, I think about the fact that he was named after his famous grandfather, but another TVD cast member looks a lot more like the guy than he does. We get these little things in our heads sometimes, don't we?

Steven R. McQueen, his grandfather Steve McQueen, and Zach Roerig. I rest my case.

This week in casts segues into something else

Zachary Levi (Chuck) has just been cast in Heroes Reborn, the Heroes sequel/reboot/whatever.

You might not be aware that I reviewed pretty much the entire run of Heroes (2006-2010). I'm still not sure why. I never wanted to review Heroes, but I did it because of reader requests. Not that I'm blaming the readers. I never should have taken on a show I didn't love wholeheartedly.

Heroes was wonderful at first, and reviewing it was fun. And then it became not so wonderful, and reviewing it was a struggle. And then it became an albatross around my neck, and I absolutely hated reviewing it. So to be totally honest with you guys (as if I hadn't been already), the thought of enduring more Heroes makes me feel angry, put upon and resentful. I don't want to watch it, much less review it. I don't even want to see the show's name in the listings. Can't they just let the show rest in peace in the television graveyard?

Wow. Where did that rant come from? I must have been sitting on that one for quite awhile. Zachary Levi, I apologize. You just got in my path there.

This week in cats

I'm going to skip over the "Russian cat saves abandoned baby" news story because I bet the cat was just using the baby to keep warm, not the reverse. Instead, I'm posting that cat lovers in Western Australia had the opportunity to attend Perth's first cat video festival on Saturday, with videos curated by Henri le chat noir's human, Will Braden.

And that gives me the opportunity to repost the greatest cat video of them all. Often imitated and never duplicated, ladies and gentlemen, the Paw de Deux.

Billie Doux loves good television and spends way too much time writing about it.

Thank you for a great laugh on a Sunday morning. This video was being discussed at length last night at the bar where I work. Those of us who agree with you were told, in no uncertain terms, that we just didn't get it.

  2. I loved your Heroes rant, Billie! I gave up on that one part way through Season 2, and remember how much you hated continuing to cover it. Zachary Levi does good work and I have great affection for him, but I wish he was returning to television in something else.

Here's some other fun casting news I ran across in the past couple weeks: in their apparent quest to be an employment agency for ex-Spartacus actors, the team from The Flash and Arrow are bringing Liam McIntyre --- Spartacus, himself! --- in to play a villain on The Flash. Woo hoo!

  3. Damn I think I was one of those that suggesting reviewing it by posting a comment under a Lost review or something like that. I wholeheartedly apologize. I feel the same about Heroes now, I don't want to even remember they existed.

  4. So Gracepoint got cancelled, and Broadchurch is starting Series 2...I never understood the American remake when the original is concurrently running and can be seen on BBC America. I didn't watch Gracepoint, figuring what's the point? I already knew who-done-it...(unless they changed the ending)...and I'd rather hear David T in his native accent, not his (occasionally terrible) American one.

    Sooze

  5. Patryk, don't apologize! It was my choice to take it on and I honestly enjoyed it at first. I think Heroes, The Dead Zone and Smallville are the only shows I later regretted taking on. Smallville just ... would ... not... end! :)

  6. It was the meowing that saved the baby!
