This week: Game of Thrones poster -- Pilot season -- Arrow/The Flash spinoff casting news -- Confusing Alien news -- This week in Llamas

A season five poster for that show Josie Kafka likes has just been released. Cool and dragony. I like it, even though it does remind me of Leonardo DiCaprio doing "I'm on top of the world" in Titanic.

This week in casts

It's pilot season! There was so much casting news in the past week that I decided to not even try to report it all. Here are some of the more interesting bits, according to me:

-- Danny Pudi will lead the cast of a pilot entitled Strange Calls.

-- Andrew J. West, who played an absolutely horrible cannibalistic character on The Walking Dead, will star in a CW pilot called Dead People. And it's not about zombies.

-- Maggie Grace (Lost) has been cast in pilot of the CBS medical drama Code Black.

-- Chris Wood (Kai on The Vampire Diaries) has been cast in Julie Plec's new drama pilot entitled Cordon. Guess she likes him, huh?

-- Stephen Moyer and Katey Sagal were cast in the FX costume drama pilot, The Bastard Executioner.

-- Dule Hill (Psych, The West Wing) just joined the cast of Doubt.

-- Lady Gaga will star in the fifth season of American Horror Story. I'm not kidding.

-- Calista Flockhart has joined the cast of the new Supergirl show. This may be unreasonable of me, but I can't stand Calista Flockhart. Didn't like Ally McBeal, couldn't handle Brothers and Sisters because of the focus on her very dislikeable character. I hope this isn't a Supergirl dealbreaker for me.

-- Jason Biggs will NOT be returning for the third season of Orange is the New Black. You can't see me, but I'm smiling. I've complained that his character was pointless in pretty much every one of my season two reviews. Plus by many accounts, Biggs isn't the nicest human being. Great news all around.

Arrow/The Flash spinoff news

There was an announcement that the much discussed Arrow spinoff starring Brandon Routh will be more of an Arrow/The Flash spinoff conglomeration that will include Caity Lotz, Wentworth Miller, and Victor Garber (Spy Dad from Alias). Is that cool or what? In a moment, I went from mildly interested in this spinoff to somewhat excited.

There is no title for the series as yet. Brandon Routh will be playing Ray Palmer, Wentworth Miller will be Leonard Snart/Captain Cold, and Victor Garber will play his Flash character Dr. Martin Stein, who was half of Firestorm. It's unclear what's up with Garber's other superhero half played by Robbie Amell, or what character Caity Lotz will play, since Sara/Black Canary is definitely deceased. The double spinoff will include three other major DC characters. Guess we have to find a way to cover this show on Doux Reviews, huh?

Confusing Alien News

Are you a fan of the scariest science fiction movie ever, Alien, and its outstanding sequel Aliens? Do you dislike the other Alien sequels? Then I have good news for you. District 9 director Neill Blomkamp has taken on a brand new Alien movie. At first it sounded very much like it would ignore the third and fourth movies, but now it sounds like it will somehow fit in between the first and second movies. I'll admit I was hoping for a Sigourney Weaver/Michael Biehn movie and now I'm confused, but it still could be interesting. We shall see.

This week in Llamas

This was a strange news week. I was personally devastated by the loss of Leonard Nimoy, the classiest guy who ever played an alien on TV in the 1960s. There was this weird thing about a blue and black dress looking like it was gold and white.

And on Thursday, somewhere in Arizona, two llamas from a mobile petting zoo escaped their handlers and dashed for freedom. There were crime copters, people in trucks with lassoes, it was sort of amazing. The two llamas weren't hurt, although I'm sure they were pretty frightened. A compilation of coverage and the cleverest of Twitter bon mots can be found here.

  1. I love that GOT poster! Although, it certainly has me wondering exactly how far they'll be taking Tyrion's story this season. It makes me think they might be dropping big chunks of book material. Interesting.

I'm thinking we may have to check out the Atom spinoff series now, too. We don't watch Arrow (as of yet), but we love The Flash and both Captain Cold and Dr. Stein have been great fun. Hopefully it will be easy enough to jump in, if you've only watched the one series.

That dress thing is actually pretty neat. It's amazing that we put so much stock in our senses and what we "know" to be true because we've "seen" it for ourselves, when our brain is actually a master of deception. My dad really loves that Brain Games series on NatGeo, and we always end up watching a bunch of episodes when we go to visit my folks. It really gives you this amazing perspective on how our minds work and how flawed our perception of physical reality can be. Cool stuff. If anyone is interested, there are two seasons of the series (15 episodes total) on Netflix streaming.

  2. Billie, I will now think of "I'm the King of the World!" every time I see that poster! Which might make Tyrion's story more entertaining in many ways.

Re the linked article, I gotta say, I have a much easier time understanding climate change than I do understanding how that bloomin' dress can possibly be blue and black (the blue bit I can sort of see, maybe, but how that gold could possibly be black eludes me). Might explain a lot about why Homer thought the sea was wine-coloured though.

  3. Just a small update on Supergirl casting news, Dean Cain (Lois and Clark) and Helen Slater (Supergirl) have also joined the upcoming Supergirl show in some capacity. No word on who they will play, but the roles are being labeled as guest spots.

I love that poster too, and I bet the producers are changing the character arc somewhat. I haven't read the books, but I checked up on what happens to him and I wasn't very happy with the direction the books went. Either way, I am looking forward to Season 5.

I'm getting hyped for a new Spin-off including three actors I really like. But I hope at least one of those unnamed major DC characters are women, Caity is great but I think there needs more balance.

  4. I'm so happy Biggs is gone, he sucked the life out of every scene. The third season can be amazing now.
Calista on Supergirl? Eww. Why can't we have nice things?

  5. I hate to brag, but I was able to see the dress as both blue/black and white/gold, depending on the lighting of the room I was in.

Juliette, I read somewhere (no idea where) that someone figured out what Homer meant by "wine-dark sea": the ancient Greeks conceived of color differently than we do, putting more emphasis on tone than, y'know, color. Like how people who don't speak a tonal language can't really hear the different tones in, for instance, Navajo.

  6. I was *so* sure that dress was white and gold until I glanced at it again in low lighting and then suddenly it was blue and black. It was...unsettling.
