This week: Renewals and Cancellations -- Legends of Tomorrow, Cordon and Supergirl -- Some other general entertainment-related news -- A love letter

We're in the middle of finale month, and the networks just had a renewal-palooza. Well, ABC did, anyway. (Here is ChrisB's updated Renewals and Cancellations post. She's been diligent about keeping it updated.)

Nearly everything we cover appears to have been renewed -- including Agent Carter, a terrific show with not-so-good ratings that I had pretty much assumed was toast. I shouldn't have underestimated the power of Peggy Carter and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The only (fall/spring) show we review whose fate is still unknown is Person of Interest, and I am getting the feeling that Team Machine might be going down for the count. CBS should catch up with the rest of the television world and make their final decrees known next week.

The list of new fall shows is already so long that I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I'm finding myself the most interested in Legends of Tomorrow, the Flash/Arrow spinoff that is apparently going to be a lot more than just a new action series centered around a superhero. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) And the cast of heroes and villains (Brandon Routh, Victor Garber, Caity Lotz, Arthur Darvill, Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell) just makes me want to take on reviewing it, sight unseen.

Cordon, the new Julie Plec show described in the same article, also draws my attention because it's Julie Plec and I'm a Vampire Diaries fan. The synopsis does sound a bit Walking Dead-like; I hope it's not. And Supergirl. Hmm. As someone who reviewed ten seasons of Smallville, the last few against my will, I want to be excited by a major network doing Supergirl, but I'm worried that they won't be able to pull it off. Why? Because it's a major network. Major networks often have difficulty with the creativity thing when it comes to science fiction and fantasy. They try to play it too safe and end up making a boring property. I shouldn't project so much, though. It could be good.

Some other general entertainment news

--- Stephen Colbert did something wonderful: he funded every single teacher requesting a grant in the state of South Carolina. Bravo. (Love the beard.)

-- Morgan and Wong are returning for the X-Files revival!

-- There was a rumor awhile back that the powers that be were discussing a new Star Trek series for television. False rumor, as it turns out. No such luck.

-- Orlando Jones won't be returning for season three of Sleepy Hollow! No John Noble, no Katia Winter -- who does that leave? Tom Mison, Nicole Beharie, Lyndie Greenwood, and that's it? Let me guess. Back to the drawing board?

A love letter

This past week, Joss Whedon left Twitter as well as pretty much the internet after being attacked nearly non-stop with criticism about Avengers 2 and particularly the portrayal of Black Widow. (If you haven't been reading about it, here are a couple of articles: here and here.)

Whedon said he left because of the "noise", and because he wants to just be able to write in peace. He posted: "Fandom is about enjoying the things you love and critiquing them and sharing them with your friends. It's not about hate." I couldn't agree more. It's the reason this site exists, the reason why we try to focus on the positive, about what we love. My pen name is Billie Doux because a 'billet-doux' is a love letter. We write love letters.

So here is a love letter.

Dear Joss Whedon:

The internet is fucking nuts. You know this. Just ignore it. We still love you.

Sincerely,
The Agents of D.O.U.X.

Billie Doux loves good television and spends way too much time writing about it.

  1. Thanks for the links to those articles Billie - both very sensible! I especially liked the io9 one - there really have been a lot of issues surrounding Age of Ultron in this area, but that's never a reason to behave like a troll.

  2. Thanks to Josie, who sent me the links and is more on top of this thing than I am. :)

  3. I agree with Juliette that the i09 article was good. It was reasoned and well thought out. A nice change from much of what I have seen.

    The love letter is great!

  4. Aww I will miss Jones. His character was one of my faves. And his tweets about the show are always a treat.
Speaking of which..Joss I love you too.
    Never listen to trolls.
Legends of tomorrow sounds awesome..I need Caity Lotz to be Hawkgirl.

  5. Legends Of Tomorrow certainly looks intriguing, and boasts a pretty impressive cast(Hooray for Caity Lotz coming back to my screen!). I just hope the Arrow/Flash creative team aren't taking on too much by trying to balance three shows. Arrow hasn't been as strong this year imho, whether it's due to the creative team trying to handle both Arrow and The Flash, I don't know.

If Sleepy Hollow survives past Season 3 I'll be shocked, clearly the writers have no idea what they're doing with that show. I was probably a bigger Katrina fan than most, but I'm glad Katia Winter's off that show, the writers mishandled her character horribly.

SO psyched that both Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter are coming back. AoS has been a lot of fun this year, they were really hampered when they first started by having to mark time until Winter Soldier. And Agent Carter was an absolute delight. As much fun as Hayley Atwell was in the first Cap movie, she was even better in this series, I can't wait to see what's next for her(and for the love of all that is holy, MORE DUM-DUM DUGAN!). Plus, Hayley is adorable on Twitter when they're shooting the show. :)

  6. I wonder about the real story behind season 2 of Sleepy Hollow, because it's pretty clear from rewatching it that the writers changed their mind about what they were going to do about halfway through the season, treaded water for a couple of episodes, and then lunged to a rushed conclusion. Since they're professionals I assume this wasn't by choice*, so I'd love to hear about whatever outside pressures forced such an obvious change of plans partway through a season.

    * - If I'm wrong and this hare-brained narrative was actually the best they can do, they need to turn in their WGA cards. It's that ridiculous.

  7. Shadow, that actually makes me wonder if perhaps Katia told them partway through the season that she wanted out, and they decided to turn Katrina evil so they could kill her off at the end. Either way, Season 2 was a mess from beginning to end, and turned me off the show completely. Even if Katia Winter was still on it I probably wouldn't be watching anymore.
