iZombie: Zombie Bro

"Brain fart: whole new level."

‘Zombie Bro’ was the funniest episode of iZombie so far. I’m not sure what that says about me. Maybe it means I’m a sucker for Frat Boy humour. Or maybe I’m more of a sucker for a well timed, sharply written drama, with just the right amount of silliness.

From the first “bro” to the last burp I don’t think I stopped laughing once. Well, maybe when things took a darker turn towards the end of the episode, but let’s focus on the beer pong first.

It’s so often that the brains Liv gets take her to some dark places. Last week, Wendell made her a grouchy cynic. Chad, on the other hand, helped Liv to stay happy and “chill” while she helped Clive track down his furry killer, all while making time for some pretty hilarious pranks along the way; I don’t think the image of Ravi covered in makeup with “FART” plastered across his forehead will ever be not funny.

Obviously things took a darker turn when we learned the sad truth behind Chad’s murder – a case of mistaken identity. I sound like a broken record when it comes to iZombie, but I’m so amazed with how easily this show can tackle its formula from so many different angles, and still produce a well crafted and balanced episode of television each time.

It’s even more amazing when you think of all the side action that’s happening away from Liv’s day job with Clive. Ravi’s mission to score Utopium managed to give us some of his best character moments, but also further Major’s darker turn as a zombie hitman. I get why he’s as mad at Liv as he is, but I wish that he’d start to see things from her perspective. She’s not really in a normal position; can he really judge her actions when they were in his best interest?

Blaine’s schemes don’t seem to have slowed down since he was made human again. If anything, they’ve multiplied. And now his father (Robert Knepper, who may look a tad bit too young to be Blaine’s dad) is being dragged into it. I’m really curious to see more of this dynamic play out. We know so little about Blaine if you think about it. All we really know is that he’s a total creep and a little bit of a psychopath. Was his father responsible for making his son turn out the way he did? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for more scenes like the one they had this week.

Plus

Gilda, Liv’s Max Rager spying roommate, tagged along with Liv to the Frat party. I don’t think she learned many secrets other than Liv’s talent for beer pong.

Ravi is apparently Jamaican (LOL).

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate this:

I giggle uncontrollably every time I look at that.

How great was Liv’s crime scene dress?

Every scene of Ravi on drugs was 10/10.

He Said, She Said

Liv: “Chakrabataaaaayyy??”

Ravi: “What if someone came in to identify a loved one and the medical examiner had 'Fart' written on his forehead?!”

Liv: “I’m on frat boy brains at the moment, and everything’s getting filtered through the bro-zone layer.”

Liv: “Right now I’ve got one word in my brocabulary, and that word is justice. I am going on the vision quest of all vision quests. I will not rest until I find the bastard who – BEER PONG!!!!”

If I was ever to show anybody an episode of iZombie to get them to truly appreciate how ingenious it is, ‘Zombie Bro’ would be top of the list. It was unbelievably funny, intelligently scripted and surprisingly affecting. Season two is already one of the best seasons I’ve seen of anything and we’re only two episodes in. Colour me impressed (if I wasn’t impressed enough already).

  2. Dude, not funny.

No, it is funny when Liv does a parody of it, but by itself — no. Absolutely not.

And, by the way, didn't they say that the killer was unusually high? This kid was kinda short.

  3. I will say that I figured out the "twist" about the wrong guy getting killed as soon as they revealed someone with the same name as him, because DUH. That being said, the scene where they informed the killer that he'd killed the wrong guy was well done.

The role of Liv must be an absolute dream job for Rose McIver. She gets to create a fully realized character while at the same time she's able to put on all these different hats and do something different each episode.

  4. This episode was like the absolute perfect mix of darkness and humor...it was definitely the funniest episode of the scene with some great one liners - "I hope you like the Jagerbombs and homoerotic subtext" lol. The frat boy jokes/puns were great, but the relationship and interactions of of Liv and Major really stole the show as usual.

At first I was laughing at the scene where Major and Ravi hit up the club and do opium, but then they did a great job of really paralleling a real drug come down as it went from being on top of the world at the club so quickly to Major laying in bed, in full PZTSD state getting blitzed on opium while Liv knocks on the door.

  5. I honestly don't blame Major being upset with Liv. I get she was trying to protect him but he actually committed himself to a mental hospital and almost got himself killed multiple times! She could've been straight with him right from the beginning.
