Star Wars Mania

Unless you've been spending your days at Walden Pond, you know by now that the "final" trailer for the latest Star Wars movie hit television screens last night. It was exciting.

It made such an impact that everyone I talked to today was telling the story of where they watched it. One client of mine actually had a Monday Night Football party just so all his friends could watch the trailer together. I happened to be eating dinner in a restaurant when it aired. Everyone in the room stopped eating and talking, watched it, and cheered madly at the end of it.

Even the cast reacted with fanlike glee. Here are the two newcomers watching themselves for the first time. They seem as excited as the rest of us. Or, maybe, they're just beginning to realize that their careers are about to hit the big time.

It is a great trailer and, if you are a fan of the franchise, it does its job. It makes you want to rush online to book your tickets for opening night. Don't get too excited. If you don't have them yet, you will probably have to wait a few days before you can see it. The traffic to movie booking sites was so heavy that several of them crashed and others had major problems. I checked today; all of the seem to be back up and running.

The movie officially opens December 18, but many places are showing advanced screenings on the 17th. If you absolutely, positively must be among the first to see it, you can -- if you are willing to pay. E-Bay and other auction sites are filled with tickets and some of the asking prices are enormous. I can think of other things to spend $1,000 on, but that's just me.

With 58 days remaining until the release, you have time to catch up or re-watch the previous six movies. JD wrote a wonderful piece about the best way to view them. Billie has reviewed all six. Be sure to comment as you watch.

If you haven't seen the trailer yet, here you go:

What did you think? Are you as excited as I am to see these characters come back to the screen? Comment below and let us know what you're thinking.

ChrisB is a confirmed Star Wars nut who is wildly excited about episode seven.

  1. Okay, why not. My story is pretty simple an not all that exciting.

It was 10pm and I was headed to bed, and wanted to check out the trailer because I knew it was coming out late. But it wasn't available online yet. Perturbed and impatient I started to research and found out that halftime for the game it was supposed to air during was just about to start. So I ran to the living room, turned on the TV, searched for ESPN because I've never actually tuned to that channel before, and found there was exactly 30 seconds left in the first half of the game.

Thrilled that I made it in time, I started waiting patiently. Did you know that 30 seconds in NFL time is nearly twenty in real life? Anyway, after a long wait, some gibberish involving other games that happened during the day from the halftime announcer, a truck commercial, and some announcer trying to sound interested in Star Wars introducing the trailer, it aired.

I'm not ashamed to admit I got a bit misty.

Ten years ago, I thought it was over. Star Wars was done, we'd get some cartoons, maybe some good books. Possibly even a TV show one day. But never another movie. Never Episodes VII - IX. A decade of thinking our memories of a beloved franchise would be remain tainted by the arguably lesser prequel films.

Now we have a new trilogy. And it looks like it might actually be Star Wars again. Not just in name, but it what makes the movies special. The blend of fantasy, action, mythology, and a lived in universe that sparked the imaginations of an entire generation and literally changed the way the world regarded Science Fiction films.

I know it's just a movie. It might not even be a good one.

But right now, two months before we see it... there is a new hope that Star Wars will be great again.

  2. My son has a Star Wars bedroom. He recently announced that he wanted us to repaint and go with a LOTR theme. Knowing the new Star Wars film is going to absolutely rock (and revive his interest), I told him we'd hold off until after Christmas. Pretty sure I'm not going to have to do any painting...
