Laure's Best of 2015

Don't be mad, but I actually haven't had a lot of time to indulge my love of television this year. Gasp! I know. Don't revoke my Doux membership. I beg of you!

Despite my lack of commitment to TV watching, there were three shows that I loved and all for different reasons.

Embarrassingly, I've been a fan of The 100 since the very beginning. Probably because my tolerance is high for poorly constructed drama. Let's all take a moment and thank All My Children and Erica Kane for that. But I would never have guessed that it would turn into such beautiful television. The 100 deals with powerful commentary about what humans are capable of and the questions it poses often make me think. It's like The Walking Dead Lite. All the philosophical musing, half the gory calories. What can we be pushed to do to survive? To protect the people we love, is there a line that shouldn't be crossed? If there is a line and it gets crossed can we ever be the person from before? Plus Clarke and Bellamy are awesome. I'd eat hallucinogenic nuts with them anytime.

The biggest surprise this year was Jessica Jones. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Professor Xavier and radioactive spiders, but I've never gotten so sucked in the way I did with JJ. Sunbunny said "without his powers, Kilgrave would be just as scary and without her super strength, Jessica would be just as strong," and I couldn't agree more. This isn't the first time I've seen Krysten Ritter, and I never thought she was as a bad actress, but I've never been as impressed with her as I was here. The traumatized reluctant heroine. I wanted to take shots with her and give her hugs. David Tennant creeped me out. In fact, I don't think I've been so thoroughly creeped since my cousin let me watch Scream at the ripe age of 9. If Kilgrave had put on that white mask, I might have had a full scale breakdown and be writing this from a padded room. The writing was smart but the acting and character work drew me in more and more with every episode. Gold stars all around. I can't wait to catch up with Jess and Trish in 2016.

It's become a bit of a pattern that Doux writers turn me on to shows when they are on their last leg and about to be cancelled before their time. This was the case with Continuum. I've already rewatched the entire series since we were gifted with the final few precious episodes, and it still breaks my heart that there isn't more to come. A measly six episode final season was not what this series deserved, but we all know that it is more than fans usually get. The writers used those episodes to create magic, though. Tying up so many loose ends, giving the characters closure and still somehow gave us an ending that made sense and completed the picture with a twist I didn't see coming. It's a testament to how a show should leave their fans. If you haven't watched this show yet, do it. The fact that the writers could make sense out of time travel is proof that they knew what they were doing.

There you have it. My very concise list of TV that was worth my love this year. Cheers, folks. Here's to another year of kicking ass with Clarke, Jessica and not Kiera.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

Laure

    So true!

I discovered this show as I discovered Buffy the Vampire Slayer...just a few months after that show was over.

Luckily, I still had Angel to watch! Until it, too, was canceled.

    I blame Billie.

  2. By "I discovered this show" I mean "I discovered this website." :-)

  3. Interesting how the same shows are beginning to show up on different lists. The 100 and Jessica Jones are now on the list.

I laughed at your comment about shows that the Doux writers turn us on to. Many of the shows I have watched are a direct result of what I found on this site.

  4. I have a feeling these same three shows are going to be on my "best of" list, too. What a fun read, Laure. I'd eat hallucinogenic nuts with you, Clarke and Bellamy, too. :)

  5. Oddly enough, it was Supernatural that Doux and Billie got me into, which I thought I was joining for its last season... a year and a half ago. That show is becoming the undead itself. (Not that I'm complaining, I'm still enjoying it immensely!)

  6. Continuum is one of the best shows I've seen. Love seeing it mentioned.
Huge fan of The 100 and Jessica Jones too. Great list of 2015's absolute best.
