Eh.
The focus of this episode was making Team Witness more effective and cohesive, as they had a little trouble coming together to fight their latest challenge: a nasty hunger demon who was probably responsible for many famines throughout history, as well as the dietary problems of the Donner Party in 1848. Good times.
While I get that Dreyfuss threatening Molly would make Diana determined to take him out now now now, the way she nearly went rogue on Team Witness didn't make a ton of sense. It felt like an unreasonable character change intended to create drama. At least Jake and Alex were fun as always, except that it's becoming more and more obvious that Alex has feelings for Jake. Does she even realize? Was she deliberately or unconsciously attempting to sabotage his romance with horror movie aficionado Missy with all that pointed sarcasm?
As the veteran monster hunters, Ichabod and Jenny are the dynamic core of Team Witness. Or are they? At the lovely and somewhat silly party at Ichabod's shabby apartment, Ichabod said he might be ready to put down roots in DC and he was coaxing Jenny to consider renting the apartment down the hall. Unfortunately, Jenny is itching to take off around the world on an artifact hunt for her friend Donnie Wu. She wants to finish up with Molly's advent and move on with her life, and I find that disappointing. For me, Jenny's presence on this show is our lasting reminder of Abbie, and of Sleepy Hollow as it used to be.
While the hunger demon itself did nothing for me (it looked awfully familiar to anyone who has watched their share of Supernatural or The X-Files), I did like the demonic puzzle box with the symbols on the side, and that Alex was able to recreate it using a 3D printer. I also liked the constant trekking and victim tracking through the Eisenhower Building, which is actually a real place very close to the White House and would probably have better security than this fictional version. The part I didn't get was why Famine would be brought forth using the golden scales of Justice? Would that be related to the horror of dieting, perhaps?
The denouement in the junkyard was somewhat enjoyable. I didn't know that cars contain trace amounts of gold. Learn something new every day.
Ichabod has now figured out that Dreyfuss is launching his evil plan, which is the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse bringing on, I assume, the Apocalypse, which will eventually result in Dreyfuss as a president slash dictator. I have to say that it's fun to see Jeremy Davies so jovially evil and snarky, so full of puns. "And your hunger for power! It's like you're famished for it," he told Helen, the soon-to-be Rider of Famine. And I think it's teen heartthrob Logan MacDonald from the episode "Sick Burn" who is the Rider of Pestilence, am I correct?
With Headless on the road to recovery, that means Dreyfuss now only lacks the Horseman of War, and Ichabod's son Henry Parrish was that very same Horseman back in season two. Does that mean John Noble is coming back, even though his character is dead? I suppose being dead has never stopped a Sleepy Hollow character from coming back before.
Since I'm writing these reviews after the fact, let me take a quick trip to John Noble's page on IMDb to see if Henry Parrish will be in any of the final episodes of the series... and voila, there's the answer. If you don't want to know, don't look.

-- Jobe went through security at the Eisenhower building, and his X-ray (at first) showed a bunch of tiny horns on his body. Honestly, that was sort of stupid.
-- The Colonial flashback featured Ichabod as a redcoat, which was something we haven't seen in awhile. Edward Reed (Colonial flashback) and his descendant James F. Reed (1848 Donner party flashback) were played by the same actor, Tom Archdeacon. His accent seemed odd to me, not Redcoaty at all.

Alex: "As long as you don't start dressing like me, acting like me and then kill me and take my place."
Jenny: "I was a master at Rubik's Cube."
Ichabod: "I have no idea what you just said."
The problem with this bon mot is that I'd already referred to the demonic puzzle box as a Rubik's Cube about five times by this point.
Ichabod: "We've gathered quite the formidable troop. Long may we reign."
I'm sad to say that this was another weak episode, and there are only three more to go,

ReplyDeleteIt shows how I pay attention to the last episodes of Sleepy Hollow because I didn't notice who's in the coffins as Pentilence and Famine, but it makes sense it's both of characters you mentioned.
The notion of Famine being brought forth with the golden scales of Justice comes from the Book of Revelation, where Famine is the name given to the rider of the black horse.
