The Golden Globe Awards 2018

Best Dressed Boys
Seth Meyers hosted The Golden Globes, this year. He's not bad, but he's no Tina Fey or even Amy Poehler.  The show was fun and informative, so all's (almost) good.

This year's ceremony was awash in black as Hollywood, and the Hollywood Foreign Press threw a party that highlighted distinct feminine and political issues. I'm not going to write about the issues that were brought to light; my focus has always been on the entertainment portion of the show. However, please discuss these issues in the comments if you like, because empowerment is valuable to us all.

I've been watching The Golden Globes for as long as I can remember. My favorite thing about them is that they have awards for television and films. This brings lots of stars from both mediums together and usually it's quite the party. Also, The Globes seem to find the gems of the small screen, way before The Emmys do. I remember The X-Files winning for best drama in 1995. The whole cast and the producers looked very stunned. It's also said that these awards predict many winners for the Oscars. The Hollywood Foreign Press (whoever they are) must be smart ladies and gentlemen.

Early days and a bit wary of the spotlight.

Here are the winners of the night:

Best Motion Picture – Drama: Three Billboards outside of Ebbing, Mississippi
I've heard some good things about this one, but also that it doesn't deserve the acclaim that it's been getting.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama: Frances McDormand
Ms. McDormand's a fine actress, so good for her.  She got mauled by the man behind her, mussing her hair, and then walked up to the stage so carefully that I thought she might have been a little tipsy.  The sensors bleeped her voice, in weird places, so she was hard to understand.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama: Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour
Sorry, I got nothing.

Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical:  Ladybird
I did see a segment on TV about Greta Gerwig.  She wrote and directed this movie and it looks like a good one.  Unfortunately, she wasn't nominated for Best Director.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical:  Saoirse Ronan
She played Ladybird. (see above)  Ms. Ronan's a lovely actress.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical: James Franco
His film's The Disaster Artist and I've never heard of it.  The guy on who the movie is based, he was at the Globes.  They didn't let him say anything.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture: Allison Janney
This is cool.  Ms. Janney played Tonya Harding's mother in I, Tonya.  I really want to see that one.  I've been a big fan of ice skating and I've watched every competition between Kerrigan and Harding.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture: Sam Rockwell
Also in Three Billboards.  I usually enjoy Mr. Rockwell; he's in Galaxy Quest, too.

Best Director -- Motion Picture: Guillermo del Toro
The Shape of Water seems like an interesting tale.  Ms. Gerwig should have been nominated in this catagory, though.

Best Television Series -- Drama: The Handmaid's Tale
Definitely well deserved.  This series broadens the scope of Ms. Atwood's dystopia and lets us finally see the details of her world.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama:  Elisabeth Moss
Again, well done.  Ms. Moss makes Offred come to life.  I'm also glad that Katherine Langford was nominated for 13 Reasons Why.  She's marvelous and I totally forgot to mention her show in my best of 2017.  I was so moved by all the character's messed-up lives.  Dylan Minnette deserved a nomination, too.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series -- Drama:  Sterling K. Brown
Mr. Brown's a very good actor. He brings so much emotion to the parts that he plays. I also liked Jason Bateman in Ozark and was glad that Freddie Highmore was nominated.  He really deserved to be nominated for Bates Motel, though.

Best Television Series -- Comedy or Musical: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Yes, just a marvelous show.  Besides all the interesting characters and plotting, the period outfits make this fun.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series -- Comedy or Musical: Rachel Brosnahan
Mrs. Maisel, herself.  Ms. Brosnahan's a whirlwind of laughs and kinetic energy.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series -- Comedy or Musical: Aziz Ansari
Master of None?  Sorry, no clue.

Best Miniseries or Motion Picture made for Television: Big Little Lies
I enjoyed this production, but it's kind of weird, at times.  The cast is amazing and I especially enjoyed the young actress playing Reese Witherspoon's youngest daughter.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture made for Television: Nicole Kidman
Is there a role that Ms. Kidman isn't great in?  Watch out, Meryl Streep.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture made for Television: Ewan McGregor
I love this actor, so I'm glad he won.  However, every one of his female cast members in Fargo were far more interesting than him, sorry.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture made for Television: Laura Dern
Ms. Dern did her best to steal Big Little Lies away from the lead actresses.  She plays a complicated lady that I wouldn't want to cross.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture made for Television: Alexander SkarsgÄrd
I don't agree with this one.  Christian Slater or David Harbour would've been better choices.  Mr. Robot is a wonderful role and the Stranger Things' sheriff is the glue that held the whole season together.

DeMille Humanitarian Award: Oprah Winfrey
I'd vote for her for President.  Save us, please.

The mood was more somber than in the past, and I missed all the bright dresses that used to be worn.  However, I applaud and support anyone's right to justice and equality.

  1. Nicely done, Mallena. You made me laugh out loud three times. :)

I was really happy for the awards to Handmaid's Tale, Mrs. Maisel and Big Little Lies, best TV of the year.

  2. This is the first time in my memory I didn't watch the whole show. I just watched the arrivals (on mute) and Seth's monologue. I haven't seen anything nominated this year and it all just felt like a horrible waste of time. I would, however, like to contribute my best dressed, as per tradition.

Viola Davis - STUNNING. Just stunning.
Angelina Jolie - Kind of a 60s vibe. It was fun.
Catherine Zeta Jones - loved the sheer dress and the emeralds on top of everything...beautiful
Millie Bobby Brown - The world's best dressed tween
Diane Kruger - only someone like Diane Kruger could get away with wearing a cape.
Nicole Kidman - I kind of hate her, but she almost always picks the perfect dress.
