Doux News Weekly Roundup: March 11, 2018

Doux News is back! We will be putting up a highlight of the week's genre news hopefully every Sunday. This week we will be talking about Star Wars, Stargate, The Avengers, Mary Poppins, Gotham, Jessica Jones, John Williams and more.

The Outpost was just greenlit over at the CW which is a fantasy creation of Dean Devlin (Stargate) and Jonathan Glassner (Stargate SG1) and stars Jessica Green as Talon who develops supernatural powers as she tracks down the people who destroyed her village.

Did you know there’s a Stargate prequel series airing right now? In fact the Finale dropped a few days ago on the Stargate Command streaming service. Don’t get too excited though, there were only ten episodes at about ten minutes in length each. The service is probably going to cut together those shorts as a full length feature.

The Avengers: Infinity War run-time is currently set at 156 minutes (2 hours and 36 minutes), making it the longest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to date. The release date was also moved up a week to April 27th, likely because Marvel Studios wants to avoid spoilers from other countries releasing the movie earlier than in America. Honestly the run-time makes sense given how many characters will be in the film (there are at least 35 major and supporting characters revealed).

Gotham's final episode of the current season (season four) is titled ‘No Man’s Land’, leading to speculation that season five might tackle the famous No Man's Land story arc from the comics. Honestly I'm both excited and little scared of the idea, especially since Batman isn't actually Batman yet, and that story involved a lot of the Bat Family including Nightwing, Oracle (a paralyzed Barbara Gordon) and the Cassandra Cain version of Batgirl.

After last year's bizarre take-back cancellation of Timeless, we had to wait over a year for its return. Well, the wait is over, the show premieres tonight on NBC.

Fox may be going to a much shorter advertising time marketing model, dropping from around 14 minutes per hour down to just 2 by the year 2020. This could be coupled with some kind of per month charge, or a streaming service. No real details have been announced yet.

Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049, Halt and Catch Fire) is in negotiations to star in the new Terminator film that is being produced by James Cameron based on a story idea by him. Mackenzie will act as the new lead, with Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger set to return to their iconic roles (although exactly in what capacity is currently unknown). The film is currently set to release on July 26th, 2019.

Jessica Jones season two premiered this week: check out our review of the premiere. We'll be posting a new review every other day. Also in an interview about the new season of Jessica Jones lead actress Krysten Ritter said that there was no talk of a season two of The Defenders during her time filming S2 of Jessica Jones and doesn’t believe it is in the works.

Micro-transactions, a way for a game to have a secondary cash flow for the publisher after a game launch, have become basically an industry standard. It’s also become infamous in the AAA game industry, so much so that the latest Star Wars game basically tanked because of it. So it is news that two major upcoming releases Farcry 5 and God of War are being touted as having no ‘Loot Boxes’ or micro-transactions.

Yusuf Gatewood was just cast in a supernatural cop show called In Between about a clairvoyant woman (Harriet Dyer) who helps solve crimes with an LAPD officer and an ex-FBI agent (Gatewood).

Disney's streaming service has been shrouded in mystery. What will the platform provide as far as content? How much will it cost? Well, at least the first question has been answered. Apparently it will have everything the Mouse produces. From the entire Disney catalog of movies, all the MCU movies, all of the Star Wars films, Indiana Jones, The Muppets, some select Fox programs and films (like the X-Men franchise), new Disney/Pixar content and TV shows, a new Star Wars TV show and a new Marvel TV show.  Plus some totally new content that we've never heard of before... in other words, this service is the service for everything Disney.

Speaking of which, Jon Favreau (Iron Man) was just announced to be the writer/producer for the upcoming Star Wars TV show that will run on Disney’s upcoming streaming service.

John Williams has publicly announced that he will retire from the Star Wars franchise after completing work on the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX score.

I’ve always loved Mary Poppins, so when I heard there was going to be a soft reboot/sequel made, I was a little upset. After watching this, I feel a little bit better about it.

Movies released this week:

A Wrinkle in Time - A Disney adaptation of the book of the same name written by Madeleine L'Engle. This was previously adapted as a made for TV film released in 2003.

The Strangers: Prey at Night - A horror film starring Christina Hendricks about a family coming under threat of three masked psychopaths in an abandoned mobile home park.

The Hurricane Heist - action/thriller starring Toby Kebbell (War for the Planet of the Apes) and Maggie Grace (Lost) about a robbery of the U.S. Treasury that goes awry because of a category 5 hurricane.

Gringo - dark comedy/drama starring Joel Edgerton (Bright) and Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road). About a businessman named Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) who finds himself crossing the line from law-abiding citizen to wanted criminal.

Until next week!

  1. Welcome back, Doux News!

That Mary Poppins trailer made me cry. Wow. And you know I don't like trailers.

I'm not sure how I feel about Timeless. I watched all of it but more in the way that I felt obligated. So I guess it's got another season to truly pull me in.

Another streaming service? We so need an alternative to cable, but all these services are nickel and diming us to death. :(

No second season of The Defenders? :( :( :(

Welcome back, Doux News! No, wait. I said that already.

  2. Yay! Doux News!

I’m not sure how I feel about Infinity War’s runtime. On one hand, great! God knows that they’ll need the time. But on the other, I can’t escape this sinking feeling that the movie is going to be a train wreck. A glorious one, sure, but less Avengers 1 and more Iron Man 2.

Very sad about the lack of Defenders 2. Maybe it has something to do with Disney starting their own streaming thing? Are they going to phase out the Netflix shows eventually? (Another reason why I hate that every channel is staring their own super special streaming thing.)

The Strangers: Prey at Night was absolutely excellent. Scary and cathartic. Better than the original, in my opinion.

  3. I feel the same way about Mary Poppins. Like I was all NOOOO about it initially but after Lin Manuel Miranda got attached I felt a little better and now seeing Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins...so far it's practically perfect in every way.

The Christopher Robin trailer also got released this week and made me cry (although honestly it doesn't take much these days). Excited for the Disney streaming service. I mean I'm not excited for yet another streaming service to pay for every month but if it indeed does have everything on it, it will cut my BluRay purchases by a big chunk.

I don't know how to feel about no Defenders season 2. I mean I didn't really enjoy the first season (Danny Rand ruins everything) but I'd love to see the characters interact more. Especially Luke and Jessica.

  4. Yeah, I liked The Defenders, even with its flawed ending, much better than Iron Fist. Although that was probably because Jessica Jones was in it.

  5. There's also a twitter campaign started by the creators of Stargate to get a new series on television. I'm not interested in 10 minute shorts, so I'll hope that a new Stargate is on the horizon. The twitter tag is #StargateRising if anyone would like to help.
