I resented the way it changed the story; I didn't think Macfadyen was anywhere close to Darcy; Knightley was too girly; I could go on.

I have been avoiding re-watching it because I was so turned off the first time. What a pleasant surprise. Perhaps because this time I knew what to expect, I found myself enjoying it a great deal. I got swept up in the romance and found myself re-playing both of the big scenes --the original proposal and the scene in the field when they come together.

I can't imagine a version better than the 1995 miniseries, but this one was a pleasant surprise. At least, the second time through.ChrisBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10843864158239536750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-13652366307589344092013-05-17T00:39:06.742-04:002013-05-17T00:39:06.742-04:00I adore this adaptation, and you make excellent po...I adore this adaptation, and you make excellent points as to the quality of the production, especially as it pertains to the looks of the girls. Though not the most accurate adaptation, and of course not on par with the BBC, it's still so enjoyable. And it's got the essential sparks between Lizzy and Darcy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-46820259834561142302013-05-16T20:59:51.815-04:002013-05-16T20:59:51.815-04:00My favorites off the album are "Dawn" an...My favorites off the album are "Dawn" and "Stars and Butterflies." I agree about many of the characters, (though I like this version, the miniseries versions of Lizzy & Darcy are hands down the best) and I love your evaluation of the changes.

Favorite moment: "It should be noted that both are way too old for the role...but to hell with that. It's a fascinating mix of departures from the book I really like (I think the more annoying Mrs B and the Bennets' unhappy marriage from the 1995 version is closer to the book, but it's nice to see this more sympathetic take, especially in the scene where Lizzy reject Collins) and being faithful to the book in ways other adaptations aren't (the relative prettiness of the female characters).

I love Donald Sutherland in everything, so I love him as Mr B! All the performances are great, except I wasn't wild about the goofier take on Bingley (Simon Woods is fab, and he's coldness personified in Rome, it's a directorial/actor choice thing). I liked the more sympathetic views of Mary and Collins too.

The modern behaviour annoys me a bit, especially when Bingley walks into Jane's bedroom when she's sick, but I love Darcy's Byronic look in the field at the end.

The soundtrack is amazing. It's my favourite music to work to because it's so relaxing and not distracting.Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-74356648820249866562013-05-16T06:35:53.017-04:002013-05-16T06:35:53.017-04:00I like this version, too. The modern behavior of Lady Catherine (showing up in the middle of the night) and Elizabeth/Darcy (walking around in their nightclothes?) bothered me when I first saw this movie, but when I rewatch it I am not coming to it for authenticity so I can just sit back and be absorbed. As with most things, the BBC version wins, but this one is also enjoyable.

Great review/comparison, sunbunny! a.m.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-5307666852048675632013-05-16T01:49:33.637-04:002013-05-16T01:49:33.637-04:00I to love this version of Austen's finest work...I to love this version of Austen's finest work. Is it better than the 95' version? No, but that's kind of irrelevant. There is so much to like.

When I first saw this version, I had never seen Matthew Macfadyen in anything. A while later I watched the Mini-series Pillar's of the Earth, and kind of rediscovered him in a way. On subsequent watches of this version of P&P, I found I liked him more and more. Funny that.

I have a fondness for Donald Sutherland, so his performance was affecting for me. I loved how he reacted hearing Lizzy's confession of her feelings. Still, I get the mumbling complaint.

Thank you for this review, and for all the work you've done on the P&P adaptations.

-L.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-49669144519367979992013-05-16T00:30:08.403-04:002013-05-16T00:30:08.403-04:00I adored Matthew Macfayden as Darcy, although, hav...I adored Matthew Macfayden as Darcy, although, having grown up watching SPOOKS, I kept getting the giggles and shouting "WHAT ARE YOU DOING TOM QUINN?
