I'd be shocked if Star Fleet personnel didn't have some degree of survival training, so basic cooking and food gathering would be something they should have. One never knows when one will be stranded on an alien planet with no access to replicators!<br /><br />I really loathe when they write a character so they don't feel like the same person like Picard here as you pointed out.
