(None with mother approval, of course, but Dad was a completely different story.) Scream is one of my favorite movies ever, and it really only increased my love for the genre. But I do get what you're saying. They can be a little hard to watch sometimes, especially without the humor and general parody-ing-ness.An Honest Fangirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15093676731627861429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-14902637557730525432017-07-31T01:40:34.861-04:002017-07-31T01:40:34.861-04:00Comments are always welcome, Fangirl!

(Ditto for drinking soda.) And once I had the opportunity to do so, the horror/slasher heyday had passed.

Aside from a few Hitchcock films that were mom-approved, my first horror/slasher movie was Scream. And once you've seen that one, it's hard to want to watch what it is parodying. It seemed like it would be a perfect movie for me: geek culture and horror movies! I love both of those things! And I really, really enjoyed this movie. It was fun, funny, and had some pretty good practical effects. While at times I wasn't sure whether or not it was making fun of some of the aspects of LARPing, it was by and large a rather celebratory movie.

Josie, you wrote that: "Above all, the film doesn’t present itself as a tragedy, but a comedy: how is it either funny or happy to have all but the normative white people die brutal deaths?" I come from a very strong horror background - I've probably made it though the majority of Netflix's collection, for good or for ill. Maybe this has desensitized me to it, but I didn't really blink at the order in which people were killed. If anything, I was surprised that more people weren't. (More main characters, that is.) Usually, only one person gets out, if anyone. Especially in the style of 80s B-Movies that Knights of Badassdom embraces and uses.

Yes, Hung was killed. He fell into the stoner role, and those people never last. But he also got to be the ultimate badass and defeat the Big Bad. That was awesome. It was nonsensical, yes, but so was defeating the monster through the power of heavy metal singing. It was fun. And it gave Hung the legend and glory that his character wanted. That's a good end for the character to me. Eric also got a good end for his character. He finally leveled up, which was what he really, truly wanted.

I did really like your closing paragraph on "geek culture." I don't know when this review was originally written, but the debate between inclusion and exclusion is still going on. And it's a debate that I hope ultimately sides with inclusion. However, I do think that the movie did do away with the expected narratives of who got a happy ending. Gwen, Joe, Eric, and Hung all got endings that completed their story arc and fulfilled some wish and desire that they had. That's a good ending for me.

... I did not mean to write a multiple paragraph response on a years old review. Whoops! An Honest Fangirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15093676731627861429noreply@blogger.com
