I'd rather...I'm sorry, but I HATE this one! I'd rather watch the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version than this one. It's the closet scene between Hamlet and Gertrude that makes me go "Nope!" and walk away.

HATE this one! I'm actually a Mel Gibson acting defender (will never defend him personally, but when I was a teenager, I liked him as an actor, and I still have fond memories of his movies.) But, he should not do Shakespeare! None of the dialogue sounded realistic or natural--and this is English that Shakespeare wrote. It's modern English.

But, man, I have no good memories regarding this movie. I love Hamlet so much and this just about ruined the play for me.

KatKathyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00609424771874961444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-73995700478239859852014-09-26T08:12:11.024-04:002014-09-26T08:12:11.024-04:00A Hamlet from the time when Mel Gibson was someone...A Hamlet from the time when Mel Gibson was someone people liked. Times flies. But I remember liking it, though Close is too young to be Gibson's mom.
Helena Bonham Carter was born to play Ophelia.
Gibson did a credible Hamlet, hmm time for a rewatch.
Great review.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-34223548793701265092014-09-26T00:38:11.796-04:002014-09-26T00:38:11.796-04:00The Branagh version was the first movie of Hamlet ...The Branagh version was the first movie of Hamlet I ever saw, so I am required to hate this one. :-) Also, I saw it for the first time about two years ago.

Mel Gibson ruins it for me. Not just for the obvious reasons, but also the stare-iness that you point out, Juliette. He looks like a puzzled golden retriever that's not sure what it is supposed to retrieve.Josie Kafkahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17892717530356699008noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-66932428626761743782014-09-25T17:49:27.473-04:002014-09-25T17:49:27.473-04:00I went through a phase of wondering what everyone ...I went through a phase of wondering what everyone saw in Mel Gibson, then liking him (somewhere around What Women Want) then stopped liking him (obviously). I do very much like The Passion of the Christ, but you don't have to look at him in that, you can look at Jim Caviezal instead, who is less of a (fill in curse/insult of choice)Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-55757664164342351872014-09-25T07:28:28.410-04:002014-09-25T07:28:28.410-04:00I remember this one. I thought it was okay at the time, although I remember spending most of the movie thinking Glenn Close just didn't look old enough to be Mel Gibson's mother, and that threw me off somehow.

(I used to like Mel Gibson. You can probably guess when I stopped liking Mel Gibson.)Billie Douxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17141769005175631213noreply@blogger.com
