I liked all the stuff around George VI -- one of my favorites in the real world. His life was so tortured and sad. I felt myself tearing up several times watching this. Of course, it doesn't hurt that we already know where we are headed.

I did not miss the romance as, in fact, there wasn't a lot of it. Elizabeth was young and sheltered and fell hard for the gorgeous man who had been thrown across her path by his ever so ambitious uncle. Mountbatten truly believed that Phillip would one day be king. By the time he and his nephew realized the truth, it was too late and Philip was giving up his hereditary titles to be a duke and to "smile like a demented ape." But, let's not judge too harshly. These two have been married for over seventy years, have children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and have weathered some truly awful storms together.

Loved the scene of Churchill entering the Abbey last while everyone stood for him. The contrast of the entire nation being deferential with Clementine keeping him in his place made me smile.ChrisBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10843864158239536750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-51043864258980401422017-04-18T10:09:58.863-04:002017-04-18T10:09:58.863-04:00And I'm doing a rewatch, something I've be...And I'm doing a rewatch, something I've been intending to do because, even though I have minimal interest in the royal family, I thought this series was captivating. I thought it got better and more intriguing as it progresses. I kept wondering how old Elizabeth was as the series progressed, so I looked it up. Here, she was 21 to 25.

One thing that I thought of constantly throughout my first watch of this series was how little choice and freedom George VI and Elizabeth II actually had, and have. Buckingham Palace feels so cold and unpleasant, at least in the series. And that operation scene in the palace with the chandeliers was sort of amazing, as was the way they wrapped up the king's lung in newspaper.

Although the pomp of the wedding was sort of amazing, I thought the best scenes were George showing Elizabeth how he got through the materials in those red boxes, and the George/Philip scene in the little boats on the water. I also really liked the Christmas carol scene where George, who must have been thinking that this would be his last Christmas, was trying not to cry.

I usually love John Lithgow in everything and he did an exceptional job with Churchill, larger than life, but for some reason, I just didn't like his performance. I'm probably in the minority, though.

Very much enjoyed your review, Victoria.Billie Douxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17141769005175631213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-73625221076949290482017-04-09T23:45:15.781-04:002017-04-09T23:45:15.781-04:00I'm glad that this is being reviewed, too. I did wish that we were shown Philip and Elizabeth's courtship, but I was really impressed with Claire Foy and Matt Smith; who I still mourn as the great departed Dr. Who.

I guess the first series was a compacted period of time? Their kids didn't get any older through the whole thing. I've always been pretty fascinated with the history of the monarchy, so The Crown is a real treat. I also enjoyed Jenna Coleman's Victoria series.Mallenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11368492098724611717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-18645769105994174072017-04-07T15:55:35.937-04:002017-04-07T15:55:35.937-04:00I'm so happy you're covering this series, ...I'm so happy you're covering this series, Victoria. I thought it was amazing. And I also felt that bit of discomfort, knowing Elizabeth and Philip are still alive and living in their fishbowl. Just have to add how marvelous all of these actors are, too. Matt Smith in particular. He made me so interested in the real Philip that I ended up doing some reading.Billie Douxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17141769005175631213noreply@blogger.com
