I can see it's appeal in the comical moments and in it's star. It's not as good when it gets overly dramatic, or when the music gets really loud. Okay, it's a dramatic moment, we get it. I don't need to be blasted by orchestral music all the time. Calista' s character doesn't bother me so far, I'm used to seeing her being really bitchy to Elaine on Ally Mcbeal.Mallenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11368492098724611717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-29404111008136665552016-07-31T09:25:40.830-04:002016-07-31T09:25:40.830-04:00We're going to be covering the second season o...We're going to be covering the second season of Supergirl and catching up with reviews of season one during The CW's rerun that starts August 1, 2016. I liked her, I liked the character, her gleefulness and how she embraced her hero side. But here’s the thing: I don’t dig Superman and the mythology around him. He’s too powerful and so hard to be defeated it takes a lot of the danger and fun away.

But I went into this pilot hoping for the best. Female (super)heroes are usually awesome, so why not give it a try? Unfortunately, apart from Kara’s personality, this pilot had lots of problems (like cramming too much story and twists, as others pointed out).

I really disliked the boss of the secret operation. He’s fighting superpowered aliens, a nice alien offers help and he’s a complete idiot? I hope that Kara asking his permission to stop the very corny villain of the week was part of the feminist agenda of the series: by the end of the season she’ll be telling him “screw you, I’ll do whatever I want.”

Also, like Kara, I have a problem with “Supergirl”. It should be Superwoman. Just imagine for a moment a scenario where Superwoman had been created first: there’s no way they would name the guy version “Superboy”, not in our beloved patriarchal society. If I were Kara, I would fight for Superwoman.

So, that’s it. Kara’s awesome, but I don’t think I’ll be following her story.Lamounierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00225447169375363236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-80428452984684885332015-10-27T15:26:36.834-04:002015-10-27T15:26:36.834-04:00I didn't like this pilot at all. It was a little bit like Superman (the original movie) meets Ugly Betty. And at times it really felt like we were stuck in a Phantom Zone watching a recap of Superman (1978).

I would give it 1/10 Ugly_Betty impersonations, but I won't give up yet. I'll give it a couple of more episodes and hopefully it improves.TJnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-80578482719407427822015-10-27T13:41:32.305-04:002015-10-27T13:41:32.305-04:00Right, totally forgot there was a proto Supergirl ...Right, totally forgot there was a proto Supergirl in Smallville. But other than that I found the pilot enjoyable, mostly due to the incredible charm & screen presence of Melissa Benoist. Plus she looks the part 100%, they couldn't have drawn her better. I can't remember the last time a role has been cast so well. And it's not just her performance in the pilot, but outside the episode she's been every bit as adorable. She even made a cameo appearance in one of the Dubsmashwars(if you don't know what that is, then we can't be friends) videos with the Agents Of SHIELD team, in a bit of cross-brand ecumenism. :)

I'm not sure about all of the secondary characters, or the plot arcs they're setting up. The whole Fort Rozz(sp?) thing risks being a "Freak Of The Week" trap. I've heard a little bit about what they want to do with Winn & Cat, and I'm intrigued, so we'll see. This show is being made by the same group that's giving us Arrow & The Flash, so they've earned a little patience from me to find their way, especially with such an engaging lead.

And I just have to say, look at how far we've come since Smallville and "no flights, no tights" :)Patrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03943327351499919454noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-17684424012958966142015-10-27T10:17:34.917-04:002015-10-27T10:17:34.917-04:00I liked it a lot more than I expected. I like Mehcad Brooks as James, too, and the twist that he is her mentor.

Didn't like the way too obvious feminism references, or our friend from The Mentalist doing the woman-hating thing. And I can't stand Calista Flockhart, or the character she's playing.

But I'll definitely keep watching, at least for awhile.
