To be honest, even in the 19th century I suspect celebrities like Oscar Wilde and Sarah Bernhardt were acceptable (if somewhat edgy) dinner guests.magrittenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-23546878709009951022014-02-06T15:21:37.008-05:002014-02-06T15:21:37.008-05:00Don't worry ChrisB, Downton CAN and WILL recov...Don't worry ChrisB, Downton CAN and WILL recover from this! At least in my opinion... Don't want to spoil anything for you.

Part of me thinks they went with that storyline just to add some drama to the Bates' relationship, but as you said -from a historical point of view- it was sadly probably a fairly common occurrence (even more so by someone from "upstairs"), so if they're trying to walk us through history a little bit, then at some point something like this had to come up....

I really liked Mary with Gillingham! So happy she hasn't completely switched back to pre-Mathew Mary! :o)CrazyCrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17512240982215608638noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-87879942143631880072014-02-06T07:01:15.020-05:002014-02-06T07:01:15.020-05:00I love Room With a View, plus that song will alway...I love Room With a View, plus that song will always be associated with the film for me, and therefore not with this episode, which is good.

You all know I think Bates is a psycho anyway, and this storyline can definitely be filed under Not A Good Idea. I still love the show, as I'm still enjoying all the other storylines, and I have a great capacity to ignore the bits I didn't like and sort of pretend they didn't happen - I completely ignore the slightly creepy way Tom tells Sybil 'don't disappoint me' in season 3 and definitely the whole burning-people's-houses-down-and-abandoning-Sybil part (though in his defense, Sybil seemed perfectly happy with that plan, it was everyone else who was upset). And unlike Tom, my all-time favourite character, I never liked creepy Bates anyway. So this plot isn't going to put me off the show - but it isn't good either.

It's a shame cause as you say, the rest of the episode is really pretty good! I don't like Gillingham though. He seems totally wet and not remotely attractive to me. But this seems to be just me!

(Oh and another moment for Tom inwardly thinking 'You remember when MY WIFE DIED? No?' while at dinner with Isobel too. I can't imagine what Isobel's going through, but she could acknowledge that everyone else has suffered too.)Juliettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00203399623895589924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-8339640178323106912014-02-05T21:54:46.413-05:002014-02-05T21:54:46.413-05:00When I read about Anna's rape - and the rest o...When I read about Anna's rape - and the rest of the season's shenanigans, I knew that I was done with Downton Abbey. It was fun while it lasted but I am not going to watch a decent - although very flawed series - roll further downhill. I still think the season as a whole is marginally better than the third one (which I didn't like much at all) but I can see how this rather squalid plotline might be a dealbreaker for some.TheShadowKnowshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11073693648569864707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-63363833482130850722014-02-05T12:27:40.605-05:002014-02-05T12:27:40.605-05:00Much agreement. Afterward, I was wondering if I was done with this show. Maybe not quite yet, but it was such a huge misstep.

Room with a View is one of my absolute favorite movies. I own a copy and have watched it many times. It's even on my Favorite Movies list, although I haven't reviewed it yet.
