It expresses vividly most of what I think and feel. I tend to put off commenting on the episodes I am 1. Ambivalent towards, or 2. Love the most. This is category 2.

I love the opening scene. Two powerful creatures making love are bound to trash any room. (As Xander should’ve realized a couple weeks ago.) The look on Buffy’s face as she tells Spike, “You got it done yourself,” was definitely not one of loathing.

The Trio is heading towards their peak of evil. Making sex slaves by any other name is rape and ended in murder, accidental or not. And then to pin it on Buffy was awful.

I like Buffy trusting Tara to check out the spell. But Tara being so quick and emphatic to assure Buffy she hadn’t come back wrong was a little sad, like Tara knew Buffy still needed convincing. She stood with Buffy and supported her.

Good old Buffy innuendo: The Scoobies haven’t seen much of Buffy because she’s been slinging the double meat and poundin’ the big evil. And all tied up.

Spike’s words on the Bronze balcony sum up her dilemma. She does want to be with him, she doesn’t want to stop him, but she knows what her friends would think and she knows she shouldn’t. On a funny note - Xander’s groan, leading into the next scene, gave me a jolt. Well played, film editors.

I completely agree, Billie, on the crypt door scene. Wow. Buffy should’ve stayed with the evil bloodsucking fiend.

The time jumping fight was cool. Man, Spike put his fist through the chest of one demon. But Buffy sure was devastated. If Spike wasn’t there she would’ve given herself up and been arrested. Jonathan was not happy with it. Too bad Buffy didn’t recognize Katrina from the robot encounter.

The dream sequence was amazing, for all the reasons you stated, Billie. Dawn’s pleas were rather heartbreaking. She wanted Buffy to choose her. Spike tried physically to stop Buffy, to no avail, probably because he wasn’t willing to hurt her like she hurt him. So hard to watch her pound Spike, even after he changed to his human face. At least he slowed her down long enough to keep her out of jail. And at least Buffy seemed horrified by what she’d done to Spike. Revealing, that Buffy assured Willow it was without a doubt Warren by quoting Spike, “You always hurt the one you love.” Must be true.

And after all that, Buffy finds that it’s not the spell’s fault she’s acting the way she is. She truly does love/hate Spike and she needs to stop using him because she won’t let herself love him, soulless as he is.

They sure packed a lot into this episode.

Oh, and thanks for the great turn of phrase, “status is quo-ing.” I love it!Mågenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-17541259023013151592021-09-13T13:10:10.694-04:002021-09-13T13:10:10.694-04:00That sex scene at The Bronze while watching her fr...That sex scene at The Bronze while watching her friends dance was nauseating, and finally my first instance of really having my immersion break on this show. Poor writing is fine, but that felt so much like porny fanfiction. I worry for whoever wrote that, but not surprised Marti Noxon would let it pass through. I'm not even a squeamish person but if I was watching this as it aired, that's probably the point I would've finally nope'd out of things and waited for the DVDs. Pointless blatant dick monster the episode before, and then straight-out rape earlier in this episode right before The Bronze, yeah... I'm thinking this is the nadir of the show. Disgusting. I feel weird siding with the s6 detractors since I love depressing periods in a character's arc, but my heart goes out to anyone who had to non binge-watch this sporadic plodding. Well they captured the mood, at the very least. And I don't hate the lack of subtlety, symbolism doesn't have to be hidden and I'm not really perceptive at all tbh. I just wish they knew how to execute properly. At the risk of being unpopular, I blame this solely on you, the Spuffy fans! There used to be more to this.

Dawn's off my shit-list again, though. I wasn't cheering her on but I liked her You Were Never Really Here stance when Buffy told her she's going to turn herself in, and her lack of joy at Buffy sticking around after all. That was good. Tara stuff too... she's the one that Buffy finally confides in!

My inappropriate reaction to an inappropriate episode was thinking Buffy looked so cute in her anguish while she was beating the crap out of poor Spike. It was oddly heart-rending. And also look at what she did to his pretty face :(

I liked the majority of the episode though, just to be clear, it was definitely better than DMP after it became about the faked murder and I was more engaged with it than even Waiting In The Wings over on Angel (sorry to say, since it really is a stellar episode). I liked that Buffy still cared enough to be bothered by the wrongness of using Spike, instead of it just being about self-loathing over 'debasing' herself with a former villain. It's like she felt bad for Spike's sake, too. He's just a cog in a long conversation she's been having about herself.Onigirlihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10070327483035350298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-85910047548850758442017-06-20T17:31:42.254-04:002017-06-20T17:31:42.254-04:00Billie, I love this episode too. It's a great ...Billie, I love this episode too. It's a great exploration of the complex relationship Buffy and Spike have.

The balcony scene is always discomforting to watch. The way Spike demands that Buffy keeps looking at her friends while they have sex, ugh, that's psychological abuse at its worst.

Docnaz, I hear you. Buffy beats the hell out of Spike and we are still meant to sympathize with her. The show asks us to have empathy for the strongest one (Buffy) when they harm the weakest one (Spike). It's a gender role reversal, and maybe because it's a girl (a hero) beating a boy (a killer) we don't perceive how wrong the situation is and how wrong it is that the show still wants us to feel for Buffy. When I write it down like that, I know I shouldn't feel for Buffy, but I do. Because for me it works. In a mind-boggling way, in a thought provocative way, it works. Buffy is lost and I want her to find herself, so I feel for her. Whedon, Noxon and DeKnight are talented evil bastards.

This episode also does a great job of transitioning the Trio from comedic villains to actual villains. The damage they do is real.

Back in season two, when the show worked a lot on metaphor mode, there was "Reptile Boy", an episode about rape. It would've been a much better episode if it didn't feature any demon, if it was just plain and simple a story about guys trying to rape girls and Buffy beating them, no metaphor in the way. Which is why what "Dead Things" offers is so poignant. There is no metaphor here, Warren violates Katrina and when she regains control of her mind, she spells it out for everyone. It's rape. Jonathan and Andrew might be idiotic, silly boys who don't realize the full implications of what they are doing (not that that's an excuse), but Warren is a complete jerk all the way. I'm not crazy about the Trio as a group, but I think Warren is a terrific evil character because he is too damn real. That's great writing right there.

Tara is just lovely here. When Buffy comes out to her, she asks just the right questions and shows so much support. No judging, all love. Think if it was Buffy or another female who had been on the receiving end of this violent rage by any male character who they were in a relationship with, As a female physician who treat victims of domestic abuse I was shocked this was treated so lightly.Docnazhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17124235873822215866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-37459321431766542682012-11-07T22:23:47.661-05:002012-11-07T22:23:47.661-05:00Like when Sarah-playing-Faith was beating up Eliza...Like when Sarah-playing-Faith was beating up Eliza-playing-Buffy?QRShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02099017376388100106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13727952.post-90545748706374805602011-09-03T16:21:32.157-04:002011-09-03T16:21:32.157-04:00Great review, Billie, just wanted to add something...Great review, Billie, just wanted to add something.
When Buffy beat up Spike in front of the police station I am fairly sure she meant herself most of the time, not Spike, especially the "you are dead inside" part.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
