Classic Doctor Who on Youtube

Starting in late 2024, a BBC-operated YouTube channel Doctor Who: Classic has been posting full serials of numerous classic era adventures. It would seem that the BBC has decided that there's not much additional value to be mined from the classic era, since everything had long been released on physical media (VHS, DVD, etc), or on free channels like Pluto.TV, or on demand on Britbox, so for all intents and purposes they're now giving it away. (For the moment, at least.)

It would seem that only remaining way the BBC can generate significant revenue from the classic series now is to continue the releases of full seasons on Blu-Ray, where people still scoop them up for the updated picture quality, new bonus features, etc. (Long story short, we won't be getting a Season One Blu-Ray release any time soon.)

I will update this page as necessary, but right now, here are the currently available serials:

First Doctor (20 of 29)
Second Doctor (18 of 21) Third Doctor (all) Fourth Doctor (all) Fifth Doctor (all) Sixth Doctor (all)
Seventh Doctor (all)
These are the currently unavailable stories. One is ready, but one is blocked from release, and the rest have not yet been re-animated (at least not officially by the BBC).
  • * An Unearthly Child (complete, but co-writer's estate is withholding the broadcast rights)
  • Marco Polo (all episodes missing)
  • The Crusades (eps 2 and 4 missing)
  • Mission to the Unknown (single episode missing)
  • The Myth Makers (all episodes missing)
  • The Daleks' Master Plan (9 7 of 12 episodes missing)
  • The Massacre (all episodes missing)
  • * The Savages (all episodes missing, but fully animated restoration available)
  • The Smugglers (all episodes missing)
  • The Highlanders (all episodes missing)
  • The Wheel In Space (4 of 6 episodes missing)
  • The Space Pirates (5 of 6 episodes missing)

  1. For those who missed it, Tom Baker is now Sir Tom, having been made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire last week. Have a jelly baby to celebrate.

    1. I'm afraid an MBE isn't a knighthood so he isn't Sir Tom, although he really should be.

    2. You’re right; clearly I need to brush up on my honours categories. He certainly should be Sir Tom, though; he’s saved the place often enough.

  2. I need to catch up on the season boxed sets. I already have everything available on DVD/Blu-Ray individually, and started picking up those season sets, but fell behind.
