Doux Reviews Turns Twenty!

Doux Reviews is twenty years old this month!

Are you new to the site? Have you been hanging around for awhile? I'd love it if you readers would check in with comments. Tell us:

1. Whereabouts in the world do you live?
2. What show brought you here? (And when?)
3. Is there something you wish we were reviewing? (We'll consider it, but I can't promise anything.)
4. Anything else you'd like to ask me, or one of the other writers?
5. Are you into cats, dogs, other animals?

I'll even answer first: 1. Pennsylvania, USA; 2. I started with Buffy. It all goes back to Buffy. 5. See Kara and Dax top right.

Thank you so much for being part of Doux Reviews! Here's to twenty more.

Billie

  1. Hey hey, Ryan here, long time reader, only 2nd or 3rd time commenter. Always happy to be here, you're my favorite review site on the web. Happy 20th!!! I'm only a few years older than the site, oh goodness!

    1. Sanford, FL (just outside of Orlando).

    2. You were the only site I could find covering Sleepy Hollow back when it was airing, I think Wendigo was the first I found, and I worked through the backcataloge from there (including Lost and X-Files that I had recently watched both of, Doctor Who as my all-time favorite, and Agents of SHIELD which was in the middle of a killer season).

    3. I'm still hoping the season reviews of The Clone Wars get finished, and perhaps for its koet direct successor (The Bad Batch) as well, now that the final season is nigh.

    4. No specific questions, just a thank you for consistently high quality discourse on good media!

    5. So very much! I was always a outdoorsy kid who enjoyed a good zoo, and have turned that love into a menagerie. Plenty of dogs and cats over the years, plus some lizards and snacks and insects. Currently my partner and I have three snakes and two axolotls. I've befriended the local waterfowl and beehive, and all but one of the neighbors' dogs seem to like me!

    1. Ryan, thank you so much! I'll bring up the Clone Wars with the gang. Axolotls???

    2. I'm what you could call a senior lurker (probably with a retirement package by now) :) I must've been regularly visiting Doux Review for 10 years now, but I never seem to comment.

      1. Leuven, in Belgium (for those with memories of iron - or just Belgians) there's a lovely little dig Xander makes at Belgium in a single Buffy episode :)

      2. I do not remember, I swear to God! 10 years will do that you. There are, however, series reviews on Doux that I keep re-reading: Dr Who, X-Files, Fringe, Buffy, Star Trek TNG, Twin Peaks. It's lovely that a series review of Highlander is up (I grew up with it in the 90s...)

      3. Oh, hard! My heart's wish list is that you'd had a Babylon 5 series review but I can't ask that titanic project of you :) I still think it's an outage Netflix cancelled '1899',it was a promising show of proven creators. But here is a project that might be chewable: the 2024 Shogun series, just out on Disney +. It is scintillating!

      4. Billie, take good care of yourself, and I'd ask the same of the other writers too! It's not because I never comment that I don't care for you guys! I've 'known' you for 10 years...

      5. I grew up with cats + 15 years, love animals, and animals seem to be trusting of me in general :) I'd honestly dearly love to have a pet (dog or cat). I care for animals so much I always conclude that with my smaller appartment I can't provide them with the space they need. But I wonder from time to time whether a shelter animal facing an uncertain fate would be thrilled to come live with me nevertheless.

With the shows that I like, I could easily imagine to begin working (or founding) a hidden zoo for legendary animals that have lost their natural habitat in the sceptical, uber-rational 21st century. Nagas, basilisks, oriental dragons, spirit foxes... we'd build a safe haven from them and learn from their wisdom, putting nuggets of their charm and magic out in the world in undercover form....

      Delete
    3. Stijn, I'm with you on the hidden zoo concept.

I was nuts about Babylon 5 when it was airing and I wrote short reviews for some of my online friends even before I started reviewing Buffy. Those reviews are lost now, and even though I did a rewatch awhile back, I can't quite make myself write about B5 now. Mark Greig did a long, excellent series review awhile back, though.

      https://www.douxreviews.com/2015/08/babylon-5-series-review.html

We haven't gotten a volunteer for Shogun yet, but it could happen.

    4. Thanks Billie, it's cool to see the cheers for B5 here :)

  2. Twenty years is just amazing! Congratulations.

    1. I live in Delaware, USA although I travel as much as I possibly can.

    2. I found the site looking for Buffy reviews. This would have been around 2006 or so. I started as a reader, became a commentator, then a writer. Have been logging on almost daily since I found it.

    5. I love animals of all kinds. My dog, a black lab called Buddy (my travel companion and in a lot of ways best friend) crossed the rainbow bridge recently. I have been lurking on lab rescue sites since, but am not quite ready for another soul to sleep in that bed by the window.

My favorite part of this site is the people I have met. Although I have never met any of them officially, I feel that I have made some close friends among the writers and the readers. Thanks, Billie, for bringing us all together.

  3. This is a great site. When I start watching a show I always come here first to see it's being/been reviewed. You're my favourite "watch along" people.

    1. Tillsonburg Ontario, Canada (roughly between Toronto and Detroit).

    2. My new girlfriend was SO into Buffy, meaning I had to quickly be SO into Buffy and Doux Reviews helped with that mission. Been married now for 16 years. Thank you Doux Reviews :)

3.Maybe 'Mindhunter' on Netflix if we're only talking about shows that go along with what's already on the site. But thinking outside the box... reliving the 90's sitcom event TV. Each post would be something like "5 sitcoms that aired this week in 199x" and review. It would be interesting to track the progression of shows compared to each other (eg. how Mad About You was effected by the emergence of Seinfeld).

    4. Do you hate me for not like Supernatural? I really tried. I really did.

    5. Dogs 100% Although currently there's a cat and a rabbit at my feet as I type this.

    2. I just remembered a "Supernatural" and "cat" story, which I think fits the venn diagram of this site :)
After watching the "Bloody Mary" episode of Supernatural, my wife was pretty unsettled. I could see out of the corner of my eye our cat walking down the hallway, so I turned to my wife and said in a spooky voice "bloody Cali, bloody Cali, bloody Cali" and right on cue the cat entered the room and meowed. My wife jumped so high I think she hit the ceiling!
To this day I think 10% of her still believes I can summon the cat by saying her name 3 times :)

  4. Hi, I'm Mikey, and I'm a Doux Reviews enthusiast.

It was reviews of Angel that brought me here originally. That segued into reading reviews of Lost with the occasional comment, which led to me reading reviews of Legends of Tomorrow, which heavens led to lots of things.

I love in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and am bad at doing things in the correct sequence.

I wish we were reviewing the showtime show Billions, by which I mean I wish I'd gotten started reviewing Billions. I will do, very shortly. And that might actually lead my sister to read something I've written, so that's a plus.

I'd like to ask everyone, who's the cat who won't cop out when there's danger all about?

And finally, I like cats, but in my heart I'm a dog person

  5. Hi Billie!

    1. Austin, TX

    2. Alias brought me on here, wait back when it was billiedoux.com and I believe the only shows you were reviewing (or had reviewed) were Buffy, Angel, Lost and Alias if I remember correctly. I pretty much arrived right when you started the site.

    3. Shows to review: Culprits was a great british Hulu show I recently discovered. Would love to read those reviews.

    4. Nothing to ask. I feel like I've gotten to know you over the last couple decades even though we have never met or exchanged correspondences. But no viewing experience is complete until I come read the review for the episode here.

    5. Little (friendly) dogs all the way.

    1. Miguel, I lived in Austin for a year while getting my MLIS. My favorite places were Central Market and the bat bridge.

  6. 1. Sumter, SC

    2. I had a question about the current season of Outlander late last year, and one of the Google answers led me to this site. I instantly fell in love. Not only with the reviews themselves, but the comments are quite interesting and entertaining as well. And I love the feeling of community that is present.

    3. Extraordinary on Hulu is pretty freaking great. I'd love to hear your take on it.

    5. I like all animals but am definitely a cat person. I love cats most of all and have four, Catherine (tortie), Thomas (brown tabby), Atticus (diluted orange tabby, basically sand colored), and Hamilton (long-haired orange tabby, giant orange fluff nugget). I would love to have enough money to turn my house into a total playground for them, with ceiling runs, wall mounts, and a large catio, and one day, when I have more money than sense I will do so. :) I dog sit for many people for my dog fix, but always go home to my cats and love them the best.

Your site has been so much fun to explore and I've barely scratched the surface of what's available. I watch tons of TV and have seen a lot of my favorites on here. Can't wait to dive in further.

    1. I just noticed that I have a typo in my name on my comment. Ugh! That will haunt me for the rest of my life. :D

I wanted to add that I work nights at a job that has a lot of downtime for TV viewing, which is why most of my comments come in the middle of the night.

Also, watching Supernatural for the first time while at work and often yelling because I startle easy and talk to the TV is great! Good thing I work alone in a pretty isolated office.

  7. I live in NY NY and I love it!

I came to this show because Buffy reviews helped me through a ton of stuff. I stayed on as a writer. I am on a sort of hiatus right now but hope to get back to it! The Doux community is amazing.

I’d love Clone Wars, Father Brown and Boniface reviews. Someone challenged me to come up with an interesting format for RuPaul reviews and that creativity might get me out of my seat as a writer.

Which main characters would you have to dinner and why?

    All animals. Except roaches.

  8. Glad to be here for the 20 year anniversary!

1: Germantown, Wisconsin. Which isn't too far from my birthplace, Milwaukee Wisconsin, although I also lived briefly near Peoria, Illinois, and some time around Michigan, mostly Jackson, for many years. it was quite the culture shock to find out that people call bubblers by other names after leaving this area!

2: Classic Doctor Who, about 2 years ago now I believe? Was looking around for various classic reviews to see other folks' take on my favorite TV show and hung around since then.

3: Space: 1999, which I can't review well myself. I did watch it and had some of the toys as a kid, but I don't recall the episodes well, unfortunately.

4: How many of the folks here are into video games and/or board games? I'm into both, but video games get more play time than board games these days.

5: Cats mostly, dogs are awesome though.

And here's to 20 more years!

    1. I am incredibly into video games! That's actually my profession and background; I'm a game dev. I also love board games, but video games have my heart and soul. Especially RPGs and visual novels.

      Delete
    2. Nice! I'm into a wide swathe of video games, especially indies these days as they're both cheaper and better than the current crop of 'AAA' games (and all their crunch and mistreatment of devs and QC).

I like big strategy games, FPS games (although mostly 'boomer shooters' as I've never CoD in the first place), RPGs (3 player game of BG3 is slowly moving), and stuff like Minecraft and V Rising.

A game dev to boot? Sounds great. What games have you worked on?

      Delete
    3. I love board games and some video games. I'm a pretty casual video gamer, but I love RPGs (Baldur's Gate II back in the day, Final Fantasy XIV these days).

    4. Mothra, I played FF14 for some time not too long ago. Got through Endwalker with a couple of friends. Oddly, never played BG till 3, despite going back to the days of the Atari 2600 for video games, and moved on to other consoles, my Commodore 64, and modern PCs.

      Delete
    5. BG3, my beloved.

Most of the fun stuff I can't talk about because I'm still under NDA and the games haven't been formally announced. But I've worked on a few mobile games, a text-based RPG, and a horror game that was actually published on Steam back in 2020 and that I'm still very proud of.

(It's called Rhome and it's free on the PC if anyone is curious.)

      Delete
    6. I am! I find most horror games on PC kind of meh, with some obvious exceptions, but I'll give it a look.

Speaking of Steam, good sale this time. I spent 50 bucks and got 10 games, including some C64 classics like Jumpman and Sword of Fargoal!

  9. 1. I'm in London, UK.
    2. Came for the Angel reviews (sometime in the mid-noughties?) and stayed for everything else.
The Lost reviews were especially great and quickly became essential reading.
Also Mark Greig's epic achievement reviewing (nearly) all of classic Doctor Who was amazing. It's a show I grew up with (I am of a certain age) and following, reading and commenting on Mark's reviews was a real treat. Thanks, Mark!
    3. So many shows, so little time ...
No specific requests but Apple TV is consistently producing excellent content right now - Severance, For All Mankind & Silo are all outstanding and definitely in the Doux Reviews wheelhouse.
    4. No other questions. Just wanted to let all the writers know how much they are appreciated. The site has been an intrinsic part of my viewing habits for many years. I love it and hope it continues for ... well, I just hope it continues :-)

  10. Happy Birthday DouxReviews! One more year and we can all toast the site together! This is the first site I come to when a new movie or show I like comes out, to see if someone picked it up!

    1. Just outside of Orlando, Fl.
    2. I first found the site while watching Lost, but was thrilled to see the mutual interest in Buffy, Angel, X-Files, etc. It was like a little nirvana for my unique viewing interests at the time.
    3. DARK - I’d do a 3rd rewatch in a heartbeat to follow along. SEVERANCE - the most unsettling show I have ever watched. THE BEAR - absolutely brilliant television that I just binged.
    4. No specific questions, but just wanted to ask for more “what are you watching” posts and those that show specific tv or book interests like the Best Of’s - they always help guide me to new things I might not otherwise watch.
    5. Team Cat - I have 5 of them, one of which is currently attempting to edit this post by trying to sit on my IPad….

  11. I'm from Los Angeles, California!
I found the site (I THINK) through Dollhouse, And then of course, I had to read everything.
I love cats, but my heart is with the dogs. I have Ava, a tiny black Schnoodle, and I live with my mom's dog Rosie, a supermutt. When I started with the site I had Beau, the fearless Yorkipoo but I sadly lost him over six years ago now.
I originally started writing here as something to put on my résumé, but it became much more than that. I've made truly great friends here (writers and readers!). But a special shoutout to Mark (he loves being singled out and embarrassed), my best friend through thick and thin, despite living on the other side of the planet. I have the date he first commented on one of my reviews written down in my calendar and every time December 22nd rolls around, I celebrate our Friendiversary!
Honestly, a big thank you to Billie for founding such a warm and inclusive environment. You can't read the comments on other sites and maintain your sanity, but I always do here because our readers are polite and thoughtful and always bring something new to the discussion.

  12. It's actually somewhat depressing that I've been reading this site for as long as I have (not exactly sure; 15 years? 20?). Tempus fugit, and all that. Oh, well. Onward:-

    1. When I started, I was near Oxford, England. I'm now in Vermont, USA. Wish I were back; maybe someday.
    2. Honestly I can't remember, but I'm willing to bet it was Star Trek, or perhaps Person of Interest.
    3. Foundation, perhaps, if only to find out whether you think it's as truly awful as I do. The original (and best) House of Cards. Babylon 5. Goliath. Many, many others, no doubt.
    4. Can't think of anything. I'm a blast at parties.
    5. Love dogs. Can tolerate cats, if they don't make me sneeze.

    Thanks for the fun reviews.

      3. A couple that standout in my mind are some foreign TV shows I've enjoyed: Babylon Berlin and El Ministerio del Tiempo. Or the Young Pope--what a deeply weird show.
      4. Nothing comes to mind.
      5. I like cats more than dogs but I've never really been a big pet person.

    2. Supernatural, 2020. I started watching it during the Covid lockdown, and found Doux Reviews a few seasons in. Someday I hope to rewatch at least the first few seasons, so that I can enjoy the episode reviews as I watch.
    4. What hidden gems do you wish more people knew about? For me, "Counterpart" and "Harlots" come to mind, both quality, under-the-radar shows that were cancelled too soon.
    5. I'm 60% cat person, 40% dog person. I never had a pet growing up (my mother was allergic), and now I travel too much to be a pet owner, but I've always loved being around other people's pets.

  14. MiloStanfield here. When I was a kid (don't ask) we passed around small spiral notebooks with a list of ?s like these. You would enter your answer and pass it on. Think they were called "Slam" books or "Slang" books or something like that. Did anyone else do that?. This article reminds me of that. Fun!
    1. Whereabouts in the world do you live?
    San Francisco, CA

    2. What show brought you here?
Fringe: about the time Season 2 started (2010?). Came from a site called "Fringe Television" that was nice, but unfortunately troll infested. None of that here (THX BD!). Comments I can actually learn from. So thank you commenters as well!

    3. What shows would you like to see reviewed?
Will echo Tim's previous comment (see my #2) and wish for reviews of the excellent sci fi shows on Apple TV+ right now: Severence, Constellation, Silo, Invasion, Foundation. And I would like to request "someone" to review the excellent Season 2 of The Tourist. Please!

    4. ?s for anyone?
    Nope. I'm good.

    5. Animals I like?
All of them unless they're trying to eat me. All those unique flavors of natural intelligence! No pets now. I live in a tiny 3rd floor Victorian walkup and don't want to limit an animal's existence to that. So I've befriended the local wildlife, except for that damn raccoon using my garden to dig its way to China. Mostly birds. My regulars (sparrows, finches, robins, etc) are returning. We also have various doves resident. And we have Anna's hummingbirds resident here, the only hb species that does not migrate. So I get to watch them play Top Gun over my fire escape feeder all year. Who needs Tom Cruise?

    2. Oh geez. I think it was Supernatural? Sometime in 2010? I was home sick from school and was channel surfing and saw a guy stick his head in a microwave and turn it on. "It's a Terrible Life" was a really weird episode to start on, and "Monster at the End of the Book" was an even weirder episode but I was hooked. Plus, it introduced me to the fact that fandom culture was actually a thing. I must have Googled reviews and found the site. That was also about the time I got into Doctor Who, and when I Googled reviews, I found this site again! And I've never really left.

  20. What a lovely anniversary!
    1. Whereabouts in the world do you live?
Wisconsin! (Nice to see I'm not the only one)

    2. What show brought you here? (And when?)
Eek, I'm really not sure. It could have been Alias, Buffy/Angel, Person of Interest, or Fringe! Sometime in 2016-17 I think so well after any of those shows aired anyway... But a slightly scarily long time apparently!

    3. Is there something you wish we were reviewing? (We'll consider it, but I can't promise anything.)
Foundation! To the point where I might consider offering to write reviews when Season 3 happens...

    4. Anything else you'd like to ask me, or one of the other writers?
Not really, just thankful this place exists!

    5. Are you into cats, dogs, other animals?
Cats of course. This place simply feels like a cat-person website.

    1. coluanprime, it might feel like a cat-person website because we do actually have a gray cat pictured at the top right. :) That's because when I was ten, my first cat was a gray-striped tabby, and most of my cats since then have been either totally gray, or gray-striped tabbies.

    3. I'm going to skip this one...
    4. No questions here
    5. Cats, obviously.

  22. 20 years? Yikes, I feel so old now...

    1. Wuppertal, Germany.

    2. Buffy and Lost, two of my very favorite shows! It was in the mid-2000s - this was perhaps the first review site I started reading regularly, back when I was still in school. I actually can't remember if I found site looking for reviews of Buffy or Lost, because I was watching both at the time. I guess the fact that there were really entertaining and insightful reviews from you for both shows is what sold me on the site. I mostly follow Youtube channels for film and show reviews nowadays, but I still regularly visit douxreviews.com, and I will continue to do so the next 20 years as well ;-)

    3. I actually can't think of anything right now! But there are two shows I really love that you guys started reviewing in the past but never finished - The Wire and Batman: The Animated Series. So if I could wish for anything, I would wish for these reviews to be finished, if that's possible :-)

    4. Favorite book series/author?

    5. My parents own a farm, so I grew up around animals. I'll always love dogs more, but I can't deny cats' inherent coolness.

Buffy is what brought me here... back when it was still billiedoux. I comment occasionally, and have read and re-read every Supernatural review because that is simply the perfect show. But I have regularly read reviews of many of the shows featured here: Lost; Chuck; Angel; Being Human (BBC); Call My Agent!; Nikita (way way way back when, I worked with Roy Dupuis when he was doing commercials... he played a matador)... and so many more. More recently, Interview with the Vampire (cannot wait for Season 2!). As I write this, I'm trying to think of a show I'd like to see that you haven't done. I was going to say Community but a quick check tells me that it's there already. Keep doing what you're doing.

    2. Chris, I also really wish we'd managed to finish The Wire. And Batman. It just happens.

      Heather, you met Roy?????? OMG!

    3. Yes... and he was young and very beautiful! Here in Québec he is a super star.

    5. I'm so envious. At one point, I was nuts about Roy. Such a terrific actor.

    6. Chris, you asked about favorite author or series. My favorite authors are John Varley, who writes hard sci-fi, and Michael Connelly, the author of the Bosch and Lincoln Lawyer serieseses. I haven't reviewed the Bosch series, but I did review all of Varley's books. Check out the Book Reviews section.

    2. What show brought you here? (And when?)Google sent me in late 2022 in answer to the search “Buffy reviews.”
    3. Is there something you wish we were reviewing? (We'll consider it, but I can't promise anything.) I vote Samantha for Bad Batch. And maybe Jedi Tales. My current favorite show, that has completely blown me away, isn’t being reviewed, but I’m ok with that.
    4. Anything else you'd like to ask me, or one of the other writers? No, just thank you.
    5. Are you into cats, dogs, other animals? I love animals, but currently can’t own any. One of my (grown) kids, though, is keeping a pretty cute axolotl named Spike at my house. 🙂

    2. I think Lost. Maybe Alias? I had just discovered BLOGS, and became obsessed with reading about the shows I was watching. I’m the only one in my household that enjoys the types of shows reviewed here… so it was nice to find a community to talk to.
    3. Not that I can think of. Nothing has really captured my interest (obsession) lately. Maybe do the last Witcher series? I loved loved loved S1. I liked the following ones but not as much. I’m not a gamer so don’t care about changes from the games (or books). I’m not happy the lead is changing.
    4. No questions. Just I’m very happy you’re still here and the community is so nice. I’m a 60 year old white liberal chick and I find I enjoy the comments from all ages and backgrounds and everyone is kind. I don’t comment much because I usually don’t have anything witty to say.
    5. Cats!!

Thanks so much everyone for all the work you do on this fabulous site.

  25. Oh forgot…

Maybe more What are you reading? I am mostly a fantasy reader, some sci-fi… lately I’ve been starting books and not finishing them. Nothing is grabbing me. Plus I’m having a hard time with series that go on forever. My library will typically have random books in a series, but not all of them. It’s annoying. I’d like some good stand alones.

    Thanks!!

    1. Sooze, yours is a name I certainly know well, and I like your comments. :) Doing a new "What are you reading?" is a great idea. If it helps, I just read two terrific stand-alones -- Starter Villain by John Scalzi, and Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. Both were just wonderful. The Scalzi novel is sci-fi-ish drifting into fantasy, and the Garmus one is sort of a dramedy.

    2. I started visiting this site like 10 years ago when I was probably 12 or 13 or something, maybe LOST brought me? My early memories are LOST, Buffy, Twin Peaks maybe?

    3. My favourite TV show at the moment is Sense8 and I really wish y'all had covered the entire first season, but it's ok either way.

    4. I don't really know the authors of the articles from one another, I never paid too much attention to who wrote what. But I would like to tell you that I've been visiting your website for basically my whole internet life and I love it here. I'll never stop coming to visit and check-in as long as the website exists and I'm really thankful that this exists. Thanks y'all,,,,,

    5. I love rats, pet rats. I think they're soooo beautiful. They're so cute and curious and foolish and secretly smart and formidable as survivors, and they're also weirdly friendly and they make me comforted.

  28. Happy 20th Billie and Agents of Doux!

    2. I'm a long time lurker and have been visiting the site since Billie's Lost reviews moved from another site to here (I think late 2004 or early 2005?) I was obsessing over Lost and Billie's reviews were the only ones I could find online with the substance and analysis that I craved. At the time I was rewatching Buffy and Angel, so this site was perfect in complimenting that too (I also participated in the site rewatch about 10 years ago I think??)

    3. I would absolutely love reviews for The White Lotus, Domina and the rest of American Horror Story!

    4. Could you restart the Doux News articles that you used to post? Really enjoyed reading those!

    5. Cats, dogs and pretty much every animal.

Finally, a big thank you for all of the hard work all the reviewers do on this site. I don't comment much, but really appreciate all of the time and effort everyone puts into this site. It's always my go-to site to read reviews of shows and movies that I'm watching. Here's to another 20 years!

    1. Sancho, thanks so much! That initial site was probably TV Tome. It became TV.com and dumped all of its writers. That's what pushed me to finally put all of my reviews on my own site.

1 - The beautiful foothills of North Carolina.
2 - Primarily Angel, but also Buffy. I found Billie's reviews on TV Tome when the shows were originally airing. I then followed along when Billie got her own website.
3 - I'd love to see full reviews of Warehouse 13, How I Met Your Mother, and Greg the Bunny.

    Here's to 20 more years!
