Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Something Blue

Buffy: "I'm getting married! Can you believe it?"
Riley: "I don't think 'no' is a strong enough word."

Poor, blue Willow continued to mope about Oz and it only worsened when she discovered that he came back and didn't tell her. (Just like Angel! What is it with those supernatural boyfriends?) Maybe her misery made her more powerful because that was one heavy-duty spell she cast. It was also a lot of fun. Okay, it was silly, too. Silly can be good. This silly was very good.

Riley is nice when he isn't running around in camouflage. So is something missing when the guy you like is nice and easy to be with? Does the pain come from the fire, as Willow said? At least Riley is perceptive enough to realize that Buffy is mysterious as well as beautiful. And he's nice to lesbians. He gets more points.

Buffy thinks she wants Riley, but interestingly enough, this episode proved that she has tremendous chemistry with Spike. The bathtub scene at the beginning was just full of sexual sparks. Every single Buffy/Spike scene had me laughing out loud; I particularly liked that "honeymooning with a big pile of dust" exchange, and the two of them criticizing each other's names.

Riley said something at the end about this episode being just another piece of the Buffy puzzle. What is that piece? That deep down, she's hot for vampires?

Bits:

— Spike was starving at Thanksgiving, but this episode had jokes about food that Spike likes. Did he just start liking human food when he got the chip and couldn't have human blood any more?

— Hair! Hair! Buffy has gone fluffy, while Anya is still searching for a style.

— Giles' apartment seems to be turning into the new gang gathering place. It's still not the library, though.

— Those manacles just won't go away. Who hasn't been in them by now?

— I'm glad poor Rat-Amy hasn't been forgotten.

— Spike is actually rather perceptive, isn't he? When he isn't trying to kill someone, that is.

Quotes:

Buffy: "I really like being around him, you know? And I think he cares about me. But I just feel like something's missing."
Willow: "He's not making you miserable?"
Buffy: "Exactly. Riley seems so solid. Like he wouldn't cause me heartache."
Willow: "Get out. Get out while there's still time."

Giles: "A truth spell, of course. Why didn't I think of that?"
Willow: "‘Cause you had your hands full with the undead English patient?"

Spike: "Passions is on! Timmy's down the bloody well, and if you make me miss it, I'll..."
Giles: "You'll do what? Lick me to death?"

Buffy: "No big? Anyone remember when Buffy had the fun beer-fest and went one-million years B.C.?"
Xander: "Sadly, without the fuzzy bikini."

Riley: "Who is this guy? Does he go here?"
Buffy: "Spike? (Laughs) Oh, no. He's totally old."
Riley: "Old."
Buffy: "Well, not as old as my last boyfriend was."

Anya: "Giles is blind? (waving her hand in front of his face)
Giles: "Please stop whatever you're doing. You smell like fruit roll-ups."
Spike: "This is the crack team that foils my every plan? I am deeply shamed."

D'Hoffryn: "You have much anger and pain. Your magic is strong, but your pain ... it's like a scream that pierces dimensional walls. We heard your call."
Willow: "I'm sorry. I'll try for a quiet rage."

D'Hoffryn: "That is your answer?"
Willow: "It is."
D'Hoffryn: "I'm sorry to hear that. Oh, well. Here is my talisman. You change your mind, give us a chant."

Hilarious. Fabulous. Four out of four stakes,

Billie

  1. I love this episode but Buffy and Spike as a couple? Even with magic that is just too ridiculous to be even the slightest bit remotely plausible :)

  2. This and the previous episode were both hilarious. My daughter sat with me to watch, having never seen any Buffy at all, and laughed through both as well. Four out of four stakes, indeed.

  3. Love the site and your Buffy reviews in particular. I feel you missed *the quote* of this episode: Giles, help! He is gonna scold me! :)

  4. This is such an excellent, hilarious episode. I love the Spike/Giles interactions, too. In fact, I love the way Spike interacts with anybody.

  5. One of my all time favorites. I watch it when I'm having a day and poof! no more bad day. Willow clearly cast a spell over it. Pretty much every line is perfect. I seriously admire your restraint at not putting the entire episode in your 'Quotes' section, Billie.

PS. If you don't love drunk Giles, you're wrong.

  7. I wouldn't rank this one as one of my favorites, but I do like it. It certainly always makes me laugh.

Spike is just awesome -- again. And, he and Buffy certainly spark something in each other.

  8. I do enjoy this episode, Spike, Buffy and Giles make it for me.

...Buffy seemed to be having a some bad hair days though.

  9. Caught up on Buffy - now on to Angel! Great episode again. I think this run of funny episodes is lovely. Just the thing for a grey and gloomy day. The dialogue is always so clever and the actors know how to deliver the lines. I also enjoy how this show sends up many sacred things - the perfect Thanksgiving, marriage, revenge demons. I thought that Willow would have to fight her way out of the demon dimension but no. What an enjoyable evening I just had - a string of fabulous episodes.

  10. Oh man, I must have watched this episode so. many. times! Love it, totally hilarious. Enough that I don't even think about the dubious implications of what Willow has inadvertently done to Buffy and Spike (at least they were never left alone together...)

  11. Just rewatched this again
Buffy talking to Willow at the beginning in the graveyard - "Seeing Angel in LA, even for 5 minutes, say hello to the pain".
Wow, I just realized this continuity from the Angel episode in LA when Buffy was there for a WHOLE DAY, not only 5 minutes...

I never truly enjoyed season 4 before, but, now after this re-watch and reading through these reviews, it is quickly turning into my favourite season of stand alone episodes (closely following season 6). Thank you for this website and these reviews! hope you havent forgotten about Buffy yet :)
