Supernatural: Nightshifter

Dean: "I hate those frigging things."
Sam: "You think I don't?"
Dean: "Yeah, well, one didn't turn into you and frame you for murder."

I expected them to resolve the Dean-wanted-for-murder plot by having the shapeshifter die looking like Dean again. But no. I like how they're unpredictable.

This episode moved quickly, what with the hostages and the paranoia, and I had no idea from one moment to the next who the shapeshifter really was. What I found more unnerving than the shapeshifter, though, was the revelation that the FBI knew all about the Winchesters and that they were actively pursuing Dean. No more anonymous ghostbusting heroes living off the grid; hello, America's most wanted. Dean has been pretty much shrugging off the murder rap. He wasn't shrugging this time. And now he's wanted for bank robbery, too. Sam must be wanted now, as well.

Poor Ronald Reznick. I could tell he was going to bite it because Sam lied to him in order to protect him. And this time, I think Sam was wrong. Yes, the supernatural crap is hard to believe, but it wouldn't have been that big a stretch for someone who believed the shapeshifter was a mandroid. Knowledge is power, after all.

Dean had two women he didn't know come on to him during the episode. ("Has your brother always been so wonderful?") That wasn't surprising. What's surprising is that we've had thirty-three previous episodes where strange women didn't come on to him.

Bits and pieces:

— Dean said shapeshifters were the source of werewolf legends, and that silver kills them.

— Lt. Robards looked like a homely David Duchovny. I wonder if that was on purpose, another X-Files connection?

— This week, we went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The motel room was wood-paneled and had a beer bottle and cow motif. I thought that was pretty funny.

— Dean and Sam masqueraded as FBI agents and as "Securiservice" employees.

— Jared's cast was gone. No mention of it, either. I didn't even notice at first.

Quotes:

Dean: "Frigging cops."
Sam: "They're just doing their job."
Dean: "No, they're doing our job. Only they don't know it, so they suck at it."

Sam: "What, are you pissed at me or something?"
Dean: "No, I just think it's a little creepy how good of a fed you are."

Dean: "Let me do the talking. I don't think he likes you very much, Agent Johnson." I'm assuming that was a reference to Die Hard?

Dean: "Look, I know this isn't going the way we wanted..."
Sam: (yelling) "Understatement!"

Agent Henriksen: "I want you and Sam out here, unarmed. or we come in. And yes, I know about Sam, too. Bonnie to your Clyde."
Dean: "Yeah, well, that part's true."

Another good one. I'm getting repetitious. Three out of four stars,

Billie

  1. Very good. The mandroid bit is hilarious.

  2. Although the music is always good, sometimes it's exceptional. Ending this episode with Styx was inspired.

The final bit in the car was very moving. Our boys now have a lot more to contend with - as if they didn't already have enough!

  3. I have been loving every episode this season. I agree that the music at thermal end was awesome. It went perfectly with not only the looks on their faces but Dean's "We're so skrewed."

  4. So my wife and I just now started going through all the seasons (better late than never, right?) and one of the huge nagging things that I just can't seem to let go is the fact that Dean and Sam never wear gloves. Like you said, Dean is essentially on the most wanted list and they still can't spring for a pair of gloves? Smh. I really am beginning to like this show but things like this and how it's apparently impossible for the guys to ever run into a plain or overweight female draw me out a little too much to love it. Either way, enjoying your reviews. I'm sure I'll keep reading them as I watch.

  5. One of my and my daughter's most favorite endings. The song goes perfectly, especially adding extra drumbeats to build the tension before..."We are so screwed."

  6. Loved this episode. Loved the Doctor Who cybermen reference, Ronald (i agree with you, Sam should have tell him the truth), thought Henriksen was really scary, more than many monsters, and love the final scene .
