Billie Doux: While I am still watching the nearly grown eaglet chicks at Big Bear, my cat Kara has (with my help) just discovered Cat TV on YouTube. She seems to find the fish boring, but the squirrels too exciting. Every time they run off the screen, Kara bobs behind the television, trying to see where they went. Birdies seem to be a nice compromise, although she keeps batting at the screen.
What is everyone watching this week?
Morella: Not really watching anything right now. Playing lots of V Rising with friends and the new 1.1 patch and reading a lot of Discworld.
Back when I had Jem, my first cat in the early 90s, she loved trying to catch things in video games. She especially went after the helicopter you fly in Raid on Bungeling Bay for some reason.
Victoria Grossack: I'm also watching the eaglet chicks, which have grown beautifully. The parents, Jackie and Shadow, really seem to know what they're doing.
In the past week or so, I also tried out two new-for-me movie musicals. The first was Wicked, which was offered on the airplane. It was fun to see most of The Wizard of Oz characters in their younger imagined forms. I also watched Marry Me, starring Jennifer Lopez. Despite its being a rom com with an in-your-face ridiculous plot, I really enjoyed it. Nearly all the choices the characters made were rational, at least in the moment they made them. Also, I enjoyed the music much more than I liked the music in Wicked. However, that may be unfair of me, as watching Wicked in the plane made the audios and the visuals much harder to appreciate.
Billie Doux: Airplane viewing is a pain. It's better than nothing, though. And thank you so much for turning me on to the eagle chicks, Victoria. I've become quite the fan.
It's only the fourth day and Kara is already sitting in front of the TV asking me to put on her "show." She and Dax have knocked down small pieces of furniture while doing zoomies, so I am keeping a close eye on her. I don't want to have to replace my television.
Shari: I've been down in the dumps lately, So, I've been watching mostly sports (as opposed to the news). However, on the recommendation of my best friend I consoled myself with a bit of mindless violence and watched G20. It was better than it had a right to be because of the caliber of the actors, namely Viola Davis. And yet pretty much exactly what you expect...
Panda: I'm trying my first Smallville rewatch in about 15 years, and also my first since the... news about a certain cast member came out. It’s been fun but also very eye opening. The biggest surprise is that Jonathan Kent is legitimately an awful person. The way he treats Martha is pretty damning. Not surprising that the actor who portrayed him is also awful (more specifically his political views). Not going to speak on a certain other character since I find my feelings there so much more confusing and hard to write about. I’m not sure if I’ll stick with this rewatch the whole way through, but I’ll see how it goes.
Billie Doux: Panda, Michael Rosenbaum has had Tom Welling on his podcast more than once and they've talked a bit about Allison Mack and how bizarre they've found the situation. I tried and failed to get into a rewatch a couple of years ago. I don't think the show has aged well. We don't get a lot of comments on it.
Panda: Not surprised to hear that. I’ve seen a couple of clips of that podcast. They’ve had Kristin and Erica back, amongst others. They’ve been fairly frank about the series as a whole. I might start listening as I go to keep things interesting.
Billie Doux: I should add that Smallville is one of our top twenty hit-getters. It just doesn't seem to get that many comments.
Mark Greig: I find it interesting that since the 80s we've had a live action Superman (or Superman-related) show every single decade and yet none of them really hold much rewatch value. I think the only comic book shows that do are animated ones. I'll probably be rewatching Batman: The Animated Series well into retirement, but doubt I'll ever revisit a single Arrowverse show.
Billie Doux: Mark, I loved the Arrowverse, but I haven't felt any interest in rewatching and we don't get many comments. And we reviewed a lot of it.
An Honest Fangirl: Every so often, I debate rewatching Arrow (or at least the first couple of seasons) but I always find something else to watch instead. I loved it so much in those early days, but I dropped off hard at the start of season four.
Mark Greig: I was really into it as well, but I think the heavy serialization, as well as the weaker later seasons, makes revisiting them more of a chore. The likes of BTAS, Buffy, Doctor Who, and TNG have a lot of really good standalone episodes you can just dip in and watch when you feel like to get a good quick reminder of why you love those shows. Arrow, for example, doesn't really any episodes that instantly stick out. There's no "Heart of Ice," "Hush," "Blink" or "The Inner Light." You really have to commit to a full season if you want a satisfying experience and when they're usually 22-episodes long, that can be off putting.
Mikey Heinrich: I'll just go ahead and admit it.
I sometimes rewatch Legends of Tomorrow "Crisis on Earth-X, Part 4" and "Romeo v. Juliet: Dawn of Justness" back to back and cry uncontrollably like you'd just pushed me down and stolen my ice cream.
I'm not entirely sure why I feel compelled to do this, but it happens about once a year.
It's very therapeutic.
Mikey Heinrich: (a day later) Well, that certainly killed the conversation... :)
I wish I knew how all you groupies get to see the shows over. I have been waiting half my life to see Smallville in reruns, but they never recycled it. It doesn't seem fair that you can watch any Highlander or Star Trek series a thousand times but they hold all the Arrowverse shows. Ditto Stargate, which has never been syndicated. I think Smallville was the best of the DC series, along with Gotham, and they are gone forever.
ReplyDeleteVictoria, I watched Wicked this weekend, too!
ReplyDeleteI liked it fine. I'm not a huge fan of musicals, both for the music and the way that the songs affect the pacing. But I thought it was charming.
I read the book it's based on years and years ago, so I barely remember it, but if you'd asked me to recap the book it wouldn't have had the same argument as the musical. That's not a bad thing.
