The Originals: An Old Friend Calls

"It never stops. Never."

There really is no rest for the wicked.

What a mixed episode.

Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked
Money don't grow on trees
I got bills to pay
I got mouths to feed
And ain't nothing in this world for free
No I can't slow down
I can't hold back
Though you know I wish I could
No there ain't no rest for the wicked
Until we close our eyes for good

While money and bills seem to be the last things to keep a Mikaelson up at night, I am wondering if the song writer knew the first family of vampires. This song got stuck in my brain the minute Freya lamented that the struggle never stops.

And poor Freya, you know. She waited centuries to be an active part of her family only to get thrown into a never-ending musical chair chaos of siblings traipsing in and out of her life. Well, now that Finn is back maybe the two of them can get some counseling and repair their relationship. And how is Finn back anyway?? Did he hitch a ride with Kol? Did Freya access the same mystical hooha that Davina used to bring Kol back? Was it the Strix? The Strix coven? We could be here for days if I keep going so I'll just make peace with the fact that I have to wait for next week to find out.

I was neither shocked or outraged that Hayley was killing off the Strix members that were part of her and Jackson's kidnapping and his subsequent murder. I actually thought it was quite poetic and romantic. (Did I just describe the torture and killing of people as romantic? Are the Mikaelsons rubbing off on me? Should I hug puppies for a few days to combat this new sick world view I've adopted?) It's the only thing she can offer him now. Well, I guess she's also offering to kick Elijah to the curb out of respect of something. No no no no no. There is probably logic in there somewhere but my blinding rage is keeping me from seeing it. The thing is, I totally saw this coming, too. The writers would have to be certifiable to throw away the kind of raw, electric chemistry that Phoebe Tonkin and Daniel Gillies have between them and putting them together in a real way risks that. Sometimes viewers are just in it for the chase. But even though I knew they wouldn't really let them be a thing, I still wanted to throw things at the TV throughout the entire breakup.

No no no no no no no.
My favorite couple weren't the only ones calling it quits. We finally got the real story on Cami's dramatic outbursts. Her feelings are hurt because she thinks Klaus is still in love with Aurora. And I have to say, her logic doesn't suck. I'm not sold that Klaus is really still in love with the crazy redhead, but time and time again we (and Cami) have seen Klaus go for the jugular first and ask questions later when someone so much as thinks about letting his ducks out of a row. No forgiveness. No mercy. Then Aurora outsmarts him and takes Cami's humanity and she isn't even given the courtesy of peace of mind. I'd be a little pissed too. This breakup was a little less of a gut punch, though. Probably because Cami has been so annoying and I don't think Klaus has earned a happily ever after just yet, but it did go a long way to make me enjoy our favorite therapist again.

With Cami and Klaus and Elijah and Hayley hitting the skids, at least Kol didn't stand Davina up. But he did wander into the street and murder a bunch of people. That's going to be awkward to explain in the morning. I'm a little bit hopeful about the possibilities here, though. Getting to know Kol with an addiction and will he be able to overcome it. I'm a little partial to Kolvina, because she didn't give up on him and did bring him back in the end. But how many bodies can she realistically forgive?

It warmed my heart a little that Klaus didn't even try to run away disappear with Hope and leave Hayley behind. He, of course, couldn't leave his daughter behind but the fact that he didn't try to force Hayley into a separation shows progress, I think. I'm glad to see he learned something after that whole full-time wolf curse fiasco last season. But what now? They certainly aren't writing Klaus and Hayley out of the show for any length of time, and thanks to Caroline we know that Klaus is still on the run disappeared three years from now. Are we going to be jumping forward soon? Please tell me we will get to see Klaus, Hayley and Hope hitting the sites like the Alamo and Grand Canyon.

I liked this one a lot more than most of this season, but I'm still not sure what to rate it. 3 out of 4 family road trips seems right, but a higher 3 than last week.

Bites and pieces

I found it wildly unrealistic that Klaus would let Davina walk away that easily.

#thestruggleisreal would have to be the number one most used hashtag on all Mikaelson social media. Assuming they have time for Instagram and Twitter in between all the murder and such.

There is one last white oak bullet in play.

Is it too much to wish that all six siblings come back to New Orleans alive, awake and ready to party? This show is at its best when family is at the core of the story.

Klaus: "My foes will come for me like never before. Devils of all kinds crawling out of their crevices to strike at me."
Freya: "Must you jump into crippling paranoia already?"

Elijah: "Maybe you should see a therapist."

Klaus: "Rather foolish of you to come here alone."
Kol: "She didn't come alone, brother."

Elijah: "No one is safe."

Cortez: "Your sired are coming, they will destroy everything you love."

Vincent: "Or we can not talk and keep hitting things."
Klaus: "I'd prefer to use our words."

  1. Yeah, where did Finn come from? It's fun to have Kol back, even a homicidal Kol, but I hate Finn.

My favorite moment was when Elijah handed Hayley her list with all of the names crossed off. He finished her kill list for her. Now that's love. :)

  2. I knew Hayley was going to do that 'out of respect for Jackson' thing but like you, I was still going 'argh!' the whole time. Mostly because Daniel Gillies' sad face kills me. This show is just Elijah getting repeatedly kicked in the balls, then zooming in on his face to see the tears. Elijah's love for Hayley has always been one of the most genuinely touching things on the show. He loves her and he will literally do anything for her, but he doesn't expect anything from her. It's totally selfless. He couldn't be with her, so he's been her best friend instead. He gets hurt yet again and what's his response?" I get it, whatever you need to do. I'm totally in love with you and that's just a fact of my life now."
Elijah is just the best. He'll sit on the floor in his expensive suit and just listen to you talk or let you cry, he'll make you breakfast and he'll carry out your hit list, never expecting anything in return. Perfect man.

  3. My only hope is that Finn is probably an Original again, which means that White Oak bullet has an obvious target.
