Smallville: Jinx

Mikail: "Mxyzptlk. Let me guess. You want to buy a vowel."

Another comic book staple, Mr. Mxyzptlk, but with a Smallville twist.

Clark finally injured someone playing football. Yes, it wasn't his fault, but still, Jonathan was right all along. And the whole team was depending on Clark to take them to the championships. Mr. Mxyzptlk showing up as a teenage exchange student slash bookie and controlling things with his voice was an added complication.

Personally, I find football boring, and Clark and the big game didn't resonate with me at all. I was much more involved with Mikail and the threat to Chloe. Mikail was actually pretty slimy and threatening, and worked well as a supervillain. After Clark's amazing play in the last five seconds of the championship game, that involved saving Chloe as well as winning, it appeared that Chloe may have suspected that Clark was the one who freed her. If Chloe's investigative instincts are finally focused completely on Clark, my money's on her figuring it out. Even though we have been on this road before.

I was also intrigued by the possibility that Lex got Jason fired... why? Because Lex wants Lana for himself. He certainly didn't do it out of friendship for Clark. Not this time.

Bits and pieces:

— The Smallville Crows defeated the Topeka Valley Huskies. That's a creative name for a team.

— Jonathan was gracious enough not to say I told you so, and to give Clark some well-deserved congratulations for doing even more than winning at football.

— Chloe's college fund is depleted because her father is on unemployment.

— I must admit I was waiting throughout to see what happened to Lionel after the other "foreign exchange," and I got nothing.

— Where did Lex take Mikail at the end, where Mikail "wouldn't be alone?" Does Lex have a meteor freak refuge center on floor 33.1?

— One thing I don't get. When Mikail said "Trip," how come everyone didn't trip? Did he, like, aim his voice? Was it a psychic thing?

— Clark tossed Mikail. One point.

Quotes:

Chloe: "The game was awesome. I haven't had that much fun on a couch since Johnny Rosenblatt in fifth grade." That was a bit racy for Chloe.

Clark: "I thought you'd be halfway back to the village of the damned by now."

Chloe: "Last time I checked, they weren't selling biblical plagues on Amazon."

Announcer: "Clark Kent makes another unbelievable play!" Just as Clark made an unbelievable play.

Three stars,

Billie

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.

I know. Jonathan was right. I just hate when that happens. :-)

I really, really like the idea of Chloe being in on the secret. Now that Pete has left, there is room in the show for the "one in the know" and I think Chloe would be perfect. But -- it would involve Clark trusting her enough to tell her. I'm not sure I see that happening anytime soon.

Lex getting Jason fired? It was all about Lex. He definitely is into our Miss Lang. And, some friend he is letting Lana think that Clark did it...
