Smallville: Lockdown

Lex: "If we were at the fair, I would have won you a stuffed giraffe."

Lex and Lana doing Panic Room was fine as far as it went, since Lex and Lana together are so much more fun than Lana and Clark. How romantic that Lex took a bullet for her. I thought for a moment that he was going to tell her how he felt. Too bad he didn't.

I wish I hadn't spent most of the episode speculating on which cast member was going to bite it in the next episode, but I did. (This is where avoiding spoilers pays off, because I'll admit it's a lot of fun trying to figure it out.) Last week, they were hinting strongly that it was going to be Jonathan. This week, all of the clues were that it would be Lana.

Things are coming to a crisis point with Lana and the spaceship and the whole not having sex thing. As I said in last week's review, Clark has an emotional death grip on Lana. He needs to tell her the truth before she discovers it for herself. And if he does, it will only bring them closer. Clark said at one point, "Mom, I can't imagine ever loving anyone else." (Lois drove up at that very moment, like the period on Clark's sentence.) Clark still finds Lois annoying, which borders on way too cute, but it's definitely time for Clark to move on. But how can he if Lana is still around, and in love with him? Lana has also become Lex's reason to become a good person, and he needs to move on and fulfill his destiny as a supervillain, doesn't he?

Since they've hinted strongly that it will be Lana or Jonathan, I think it's going to be Chloe. Chloe is currently occupying the spot in Clark's life that will eventually belong to Lois. Dammit, I like Chloe.

Bits and pieces:

— The whole election thing still leaves me cold, but it makes for speculation as well. I'm ready for it to be over, because I don't see how either of them can win.

— Lois tried to cover for Martha, and take the heat over Lionel's money on herself. That was sweet of her.

— The ubiquitous, wisecracking Sheriff Adams is no more, and she's been a continuing character for a long time. I've never liked her, but it's sort of sad to see her go. Her last words were, "Well, ain't that a mother."

— Extremely cool special effect for that Lana fire rescue.

— Lois called Clark "Skippy."

Quotes:

Lana: "So. When you said, let's get together and study, you actually meant study."

Lois: "Feminine wiles. Bob's got a crush on me. (glances down) Parts of me."

Lex: "Do you think I'd look better with hair? ... Clark has really nice hair."

This week's Superman reference came from the soon to be late Sheriff Adams: "Mr. Kent. Whatcha do? Drop out of the sky?"

Chloe: "Dostoevsky's Idiot isn't getting any smarter, so come on. Miss Sullivan's advice column is open for letters."

Two out of four stars, and I'm very much looking forward to next week's,

Billie

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.

  1. Is it me or does it seem around this time in the series that Martha (without saying words) feels Lois is going to be Clark's soulmate?

  2. I didn't like her much either but I still found her death notable. Good final line too
