Smallville: Solitude

Jonathan: "A Kryptonian is teaching history at Central Kansas University?"

Chloe, with Lionel's help, pretty much saved the world. How about that?

We now know that Fine was attempting to take out both Clark and Jor-El in order to free General Zod from the phantom zone. Fine's obsession with Zod and his attempt to make Clark believe that Jor-El was the Kryptonian Hitler explains all those lectures about human megalomaniacs. It was also perfect misdirection, because it didn't contradict Clark's erroneous opinion of Jor-El.

And speaking of Jor-El, he's still controlling Lionel, isn't he? Lionel knew that if he told Chloe about Fine, she would understand the implications and it would get back to Clark. Lionel also knew about Lex and the space ship. He even appeared out of nowhere behind Chloe, in that initial scene at the Planet. It makes total sense. If Jor-El has access to Lionel's memories, too, then Lionel/Jor-El may even be trying to save Lex as well as Clark.

The Martha stuff wasn't quite as much fun; in fact, it moved right into the maudlin range. I never thought the "sacrifice" would be Martha. I certainly didn't think they were going to take her out at this point, so no suspense there. Someone dying in Clark's place feels like a season-ending plotline, anyway.

And now the Brainiac is out of bag. Fine isn't dead, of course. Why do I get the feeling that General Zod is going to show up this season? Wouldn't it be wonderful if they could get Terence Stamp to play him? Maybe General Zod created Fine in his own image, and they're planning to have James Marsters play him. I'm down with that.

Bits and pieces:

— We're getting either Lois or Lana in an episode, but not both.

— I always love scenes with Chloe and Lionel. They're so cute together. Not in a romantic sense, I hasten to add.

— Chloe once again roped Lois into a Charlie's Angels escapade. "I love a man in uniform." Lois, where do you get your lines?

— What did Martha get hit with? Was it phantom-zone-shaped, or am I reaching? They have been in and out of that hospital way too many times. It must be a standing set.

— How did a muffin-peddling college drop-out qualify for a loan on a snazzy new car? Did Michael Ironside co-sign for it?

— In the scene where she was doing surveillance, Chloe was wearing a trench coat. A short trench coat. Okay, a trench jacket. It made me laugh out loud.

— In the U.S., we got some very appropriate advertising: a trailer for Superman Returns, which somehow appears to star the late Marlon Brando. The trailer started with a mailbox with the word "Kent" on it.

Quotes:

Clark: "I don't know how I could be so gullible. I believed everything he said."
Ah, yes, Clark. That's why we love you.

Lois: "There must be enough dirt on you to create a land mass the size of Texas."
Lex: "Please. Grab a shovel and start digging."

Lois: "Let me give you a little friendly advice. Bow out of the race before a pesky little squirrel digs up one of your rotten acorns."
Lex: "Well, thanks, Lois. You know, there's nothing more valuable than the savvy political advice of a muffin-peddling college dropout. Speaking of, do you have banana-blueberry today?"

Lionel: "You don't want to end up an eccentric like Howard Hughes, remembered more for his ten-inch toenails than his contributions to society."

Chloe: "Lex keeps his dirty laundry in a cast-iron hamper."

This one was soooo much fun. At least a three, and possibly a four,

Billie Doux had a love-hate relationship with Smallville, which is why some of her reviews are briefer than they should be.

  1. I believe that Jor-El is tied in with Liionel. Which, I hasten to add, is great fun. I've said it before, but poor Lex will go around the bend if Clark becomes Lionel's favourite son.

I vote more Lois, less Lana!

  2. Did anyone else note that Michael Rosenbaum had some light head stubble in the mansion scenes? Looks like he may have missed his pre-show shave.
