Dexter: "Family man. Husband and father. Sounds so... upstanding. Harmless. Much better than 'lives alone, keeps to himself'."Miguel said that love is the answer. But what is the question?
Maybe the question is, does Dexter love Rita? He talks about her as if he does. He's happy when he's with her and the kids. But Dexter still thinks his feelings aren't real, that he's not a real person. He had to role-play, to use Fiona the murderer's words to propose to Rita. (Or more accurately, to Astor and Cody.) Dexter thinks that Rita and the kids might make him a real live boy. But there's no question that marriage will make Dexter's extracurricular activities a lot more of a challenge. Plus there's that living a lie thing. And will he have to give up that lovely apartment?
Rita lost her job. It's true that that particular patron was a no-win, but did Rita want to lose her job? Was she passive-aggressiving Dexter into proposing? Not deliberately; I mean subconsciously. Rita is not the devious type, but I remember how helpless I felt when I was pregnant.
Miguel seemed very friendly and above-board this week, and I wasn't getting the creep factor from him. That was probably because Dexter was in control, busy manipulating Miguel and Ramon, and Miguel was off balance and didn't know what was going on. (Dexter manipulating Ramon gave me little flashbacks of Doakes. I miss Doakes.) Maybe I'm reading this wrong. Maybe Miguel is sincere and could turn out to be a good friend to Dexter. Nah.
Hard to tell what's going on with Quinn, and I'm not all that sure I care. Was he really playing Fiona the murderer, or did he just backtrack when he realized she was going south? I think he was faking it. Not coordinating the good cop/bad cop with Deb was just too big of a mistake, too. Deb is getting curious about him, as well as pissed off, and she's a bulldog; she won't leave it alone. She's getting closer to going IA. I wish it would happen already. We all know it's coming, even though I don't want it to.
Bits and pieces:
-- They actually answered the question I had last week about Masuka. Quinn told Masuka the truth: "You're, like, the foulest person I ever met." Maybe that's what this season is going to be about: Masuka's journey toward humanity, instead of Dexter's. Nah.
-- No skin murders this week. I somehow get the feeling this isn't the end, though. I wonder why.
-- Angel patronizes hookers, and picked up a great big undercover mistake. He was lucky that she responded so positively to his obviously sincere mea culpa. He's such a nice guy, and he needs love, like we all do. Maybe he should ask Detective Barbara Gianna, metro vice, out on a real date. I wonder if she'd go.
-- Maria is a good cop. She couldn't let the Chicky Hines thing go. The cupcakes and scotch scene with the defense attorney was fun. I've grown to like Maria.
-- Deb noticed that Quinn has an expensive car. Goes with the watch.
-- Great news, Dexter fans. We just got word that Dexter has been renewed for not one, but two (two!) more seasons. Hallelujah. A triumph for intelligent television.
Quotes:
Deb: "He's like the fucking witness whisperer."
Dexter: (to himself) "Maybe he should propose to Rita for me."
Masuka: "Et tu, Dextay?"
Dexter: "Maybe I should call Rita with an anonymous tip to marry me."
Deb: "Are you calling me an emotional idiot?"
Dexter: "If you're an idiot, I'm a vegetable."
Dexter told the truth here. He does that a lot.
Dexter: "You're what makes me real. I want us to always go out for banana splits, and replant the lemon tree that keeps dying, and I never ever want to miss a pizza night. And that's how I know I want to marry you. Because something as simple as pizza night is the highlight of my week."
As proposals go, that was a really nice one. It sounded sincere. Was it?

Another good episode. Good review, too. But I'm really wondering where it's going. A wedding? Is that it? Its a great show, tho. I should just wait and see, huh?

ReplyDeleteDexter's proposals to Rita, one was hamfisted and the last one was sincere. I think Dexter did mean it when he was telling Rita that he wanted to marry her.
Rita was a bit off in this episode. Why didn't she tell her boss that she was pregnant? Wouldn't that have been the smart thing to do in the circumstances.
Astor acting up a little had to happen. Cody seemed more at ease with having a younger sibling than his sister.
Fiona was a nut job, huh? Interesting good cop/bad cop routine with Quinn and Deb.
I see Deb has taken Yuki's offer then. Anton wasn't eager on dishing dirt on Quinn. Maybe Quinn is actually a good guy.
No skinner stuff either.
Dexter certainly played Ramon and Miguel off each other with very little effort on his part. Too bad that Miguel still seems like he's more trouble than he's worth.
Maria and Ellen with the cupcakes and scotch made a nice scene. Maria has gotten better as a character.
Angel and Barbara have some kind of potential I guess. She was right to castigate him though, 9/10.
I think you and i are coming at the Miguel thing from different angles. Throughout this entire episode, I became more convinced that Miguel is up to something and I think Ramon is helping him.
