Vampire Diaries: Bloodlines

“I knew that I could trust you if you believed that I was worthy of your trust.”

I think there might be a trust theme here. Bonnie doesn’t trust her powers, Elena doesn’t trust her boyfriend, Jeremy isn’t sure about trusting this pretty Anna girl, Damon is starting to trust Elena... but will she trust him? Should she? Can she help it? He’s just so pretty.

Damon’s past came back to haunt him in Georgia, where Bree called Lexie’s boyfriend and gave up Damon’s location. Lexie’s boyfriend did the right thing, though—for Lexie’s memory, not for Damon’s sake or Elena’s. Both the boyfriend and Bree assumed that Elena and Damon were together. An acknowledgement of their fabulous chemistry? Or just an assumption that Damon doesn’t have any friends?

It was great to see Gina Torres—it’s always great to see Gina Torres. She and Damon had a relationship twenty years ago, and somehow she was also friends with Lexie, and she’s a witch... it sort of is like they all hang out at the vamp bar and grill. At the very least, everyone seems to know everyone else. Too bad Damon had to pull her heart out of her chest. That’s hardcore. And sad.

It was also great to see Elena and Damon together. They had fun. There’s some parallel structure, too: Stefan came clean about rescuing Elena from her family’s car accident, and Damon rescued her from her more recent car accident. But whereas Damon gave her a break from all the drama (by lying to her), Stefan made things worse by revealing that Elena was adopted.

Both Elena and Jeremy are starting to learn the truth about their worlds, and it’s not always easy to take. But telling someone the truth is also a pretty good way to get them to trust you. Anna and Jeremy... she certainly seems to know a lot about vampires. Must be an odd home-schooling thing.

In other parallel structure news, Damon escaped his past in Georgia only to re-encounter it in Mystic Falls: Alaric’s wife (Mia Kirschner!) was killed by Damon, and now Alaric has found his man. Well, his vampire. We still don’t know what Alaric is, or what his ring is for. But we’ll find out.

And, meanwhile, Bonnie is struggling with her lost witchiness, and Stefan is bonding with Grams. Oh, and we found the tomb, and now Damon is looking for Emily’s grimoire.

Bites:

• Damon: “Ugh, you were so much more fun when you were asleep.”

• Elena: “Am I going to be safe with you?”
Damon: “Yes.”
Elena: “Do you promise not to do that mind-control thing?”
Damon: “Yes.”
Elena: “Can I trust you?”
Damon: “Get in the car.”

• Damon: “It’s not like we all hang out together at the vamp bar and grill.”

• Elena: “Don’t pretend to care. I know you’re gloating inside.”

• Grams: “You know what I am, and yet you offered me your hand, which means you wanted me to see that I can trust you.”
Stefan: “Can you?”
Grams: “I trust you’ll keep her safe.”

• Damon: “Sorry I can’t unhinge my jaw like a snake to consume alcohol.”

• Damon: “There you were in the road, all damsel-in-distress-like, and I knew it would piss off Stefan, and you’re not the worst company in the world, Elena.”

• Stefan: “The resemblance was too similar.” Maybe the wrong brother didn’t go to college.

And Pieces:

• Damon drank Elena’s first shot—and the look on his face was “you’re too young.” So cute.

• I understand why Elena would lie to Jenna about being in Georgia. I don’t understand why she wouldn’t mention just wrecking her car. Oh, well. At least she has the adoption card to play in whatever “where’s the car?” conversations they have later.

• Jeremy got a little speechy in the library. They could have sanded the corners off that wooden dialogue, just a bit.

• Damon tried to get Bree to help him open the tomb 20 years ago. That’s devotion.

• This is definitely the first episode that began with Damon rescuing someone, and it ended with him in possible danger. Neat twist on the formula.

• I sort of kept my eye on the clock as this episode went by: each scene was about a minute and a half long. No wonder this show is so intense. Something new is happening every 90 seconds.

Three out of four fireflies.

  1. Sexual chemistry road trip! Finally, some real triangle action. And Gina Torres, too? Loved it.

I'm finally starting to like Elena's brother Jeremy a lot more now that he's not the stereotypical angry young jerk. And that's all due to Damon, too. What a delightful plot thread that is.

  3. Can't help but notice that everything is pretty angst filled between Stefan and Elena and fun filled between Damon and Elena.

Escape, my girl, and go drink tequila. Tomorrow is another day.

  4. Well, if I didn't like this show already, this episode would have definitely pushed me in that direction. Always fun seeing Gina Torres - too bad she had to die at the end. Bit of a shock, since Damon played so nice in this episode, but I guess the writers wanted to remind us he's still super evil. Though of course, Bree had tried to get him killed.

And I love the fact that Anna's homeschooled. Homeschoolers are vastly underrepresented in modern media, and when one of us does show up, it's usually a caricature. A cool, bookworm-type who does research for fun - much more realistic.

  5. I think this was my "turning point" episode. It has several of my fascinations: adoption, homeschooling and road trips. I like Damon and Elena as friends.

  7. We got confirmation that Alaric isn't a vampire in this episode! He was looking for his ring outside during the day.
