NewsFlash: Supernatural on the cover of TV Guide

Great news, Supernatural fans! The great TV Guide fan vote is over, and against tremendous odds, Supernatural has beaten out five other shows. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are going to be on the cover of TV Guide magazine next week.

This makes me very happy, and I'll tell you why. As a fan of the genre show, I've always felt that the mainstream television powers that be tend to ignore us. The shows we love are rarely nominated for Emmys. We get no respect. In fact, one of the vids I saw today unveiled the cover, and the interviewer said something like, "Supernatural? Never heard of it."

What TV Guide wanted was to find out which show had the most passionate fan base. The online poll allowed people to vote as many times as they wanted -- but they also had to put that verification word thingy in that changed every time so it couldn't be hijacked by machine. (Yes, I voted. People kept sending me the poll, and every time I received it, I voted two or three times.) Of the nominated shows (which included Bones, Castle, Smallville, Chuck, and How I Met Your Mother), Supernatural does not have highest ratings or even the biggest fan base. We won because the fans cared enough to go all out and make it happen.

Check out the cast saying thank you to the fans. I love Jensen referring to us as "aggressive." :) Not to mention Misha speculating on the possibility of getting the fans to rob banks.

  1. "... it stars these two very handsome guys, and I think that's what the fans really respond to. It's about two brothers whose parents were killed by demons, and they set out to avenge their parents' death. But I think that's what the fans really respond to, is not just the sci-fi and the action, but really the family relationship, the ancient battle between good and evil, and frankly two very good-looking guys."

Well, as a fan, I'm really excited for Supernatural's cover. It's fantastic news... Is it just me, though, or does this lady emphasize the "two handsome guys" too much? That's not why I watch Supernatural. I felt kinda like she was saying it won because of that... I'm probably just being paranoid, though. If I just wanted to watch shows because of the hot guys, I'd be watching Smallville and 90210. Plus, the other 5 tv show contender all have hot guys of their own.

Am I being unfair to Ms. Birnbaum and taking her words too far? Or did you guys feel she emphasized the boys's looks a little much as well?

Anyway, congrats to Supernatural! And, yes, Misha I definitely would rob a bank for you.

  2. Shoot! Forgot the link and explainer. I think this is the vid you were talking about, Billie. I was curious and looked it up.

  3. Heather,

Yes, that's the vid. And I felt *exactly* the same way you did about the "two handsome guys". I don't get passionate about a show because it stars pretty people -- every freaking show stars pretty people. I'm passionate about Supernatural because of the Winchesters, their tragic lives, their family dynamic, and the terrific stories they've done.

I appreciate what TV Guide did. But it's clear that the woman doesn't "get it."

  4. Dimitri, is that a little dig about my obsession with Jensen? :)

  5. Thanks so much, Billie! I happen to love the positive atmosphere on this site, and I was trying really hard to be fair to her and not rant too much. I just feel a tiny bit insulted when I think someone is saying that I, as a fan of the show, "really respond to" the actors' good looks... twice. It kind of dampens my joy at their win.

I also noticed Ms. Birnbaum didn't look genuinely happy when she said Supernatural was the winner. Maybe she was pulling for Chuck. It only lost by 20,000 votes out of over 5 million. Yay for Chuck (which I also adore)!

The main things I love about Supernatural is their constantly growing mythology and how they aren't afraid to push boundaries (*cough* apocalypse *cough*). I also love the comedy and the interaction between the characters. Some of my favorite quotes are from Supernatural. Yeah, it is way more than a bunch of pretty faces, and they really earned this win.

    Sorry for ranting!

  6. You're very welcome, Heather, and I don't consider that a rant. And I'm so glad you like the positive atmosphere on the site, because it's something we care deeply about.

To give Ms. Birnbaum the benefit of the doubt, she may not have ever seen the show and probably didn't know why we love it so much. But she should have done her homework!

  7. Well, she is the Editor-in-Chief of the TV guide so I would hope she did...

  8. If I just wanted to watch a show that stars goodlooking guys, I would watch porn. Supernatural is amazing because those hunks can Act, the writing is often brilliant and the subject matter is escapist goldust.

So I am guessing TV Guide is a really popular magazine in America then? Or is it about the competition angle?

  9. Harry, too much information! Just kidding, but I totally get where you're coming from (apart from the gay porn bit). Jensen and Jared are superb actors and the plot-lines are like nothing else.

I'm hoping this minor lift in the popularity stakes will help them secure a seventh season. Now we know there's life after Kripke, I don't see why the show can't continue for at least another season.

  10. Paul,

who said anything about *gay* porn?

I disagree with Harry on just one part: escapism. I think either all fiction is escapist or none is. Our boys may hunt demons, but as soon as you recognize they're talking about family relationships, it's not escaping, it's real life. Unless you have no family.

Of course, some fiction is more grounded on our objective/physical reality than others, but that doesn't mean they *convey* and *discuss* reality better than science fiction. In fact, some (including me) would argue that, since sci-fi presents a heightened reality, certain subtleties are better presented, such as when you see things through a microscope.

  11. Gus, isn't *gay* porn implied by the statement "If I just wanted to watch a show that stars goodlooking guys, I would watch porn." How many straight porn films have you seen with good looking guys?

    I rest my case! ;o)

  12. Don't know what you're talking about, Paul. Ron Jeremy totally does it for me.

No, if I wanted to watch a show with good looking guys, I would watch Jonas LA. Ha! Disney Channel reference number 8. Two to go.

  13. I agree with Paul, re: a seventh season. I was none too quiet about my general unhappiness that they were extending the show beyond the close of its natural arc, but darn if I haven't been enjoying this season. I may actually be enjoying it more than last season. So if they can keep up the current level of story-telling, I may be down with getting another season. I guess it depends on where they take this season's arcs, and how things resolve.

Congrats to the guys for making the TV Guide cover! It's really nice to see the show get cover recognition on a major general circulation magazine. They join the ranks with other sci-fi/fantasy greats including Buffy, Star Trek, and X-Files (and others I'm sure I'm forgetting at the moment).

  14. Harry -- yes, TV Guide is a very popular publication. At one point it had the highest circulation of any magazine in the United States, although I don't know if that's still true. Making the cover of TV Guide is a huge deal.

  15. Dimitri, I stand corrected. Ron is clearly hawt!

  16. Paul,

those guys *must* be good-looking. The girls seem to be really into them.

  18. Wait, Supernatural is better than gay porn? Gotta see this.

  19. It's funny thatthe guys are all engaged in a gay porn discussion, while the girls act totally oblivious.

    ReplyDelete
  20. You know, I really look forward to the day gay porn finally makes it on the cover of TV Guide.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm not oblivious either, but I think I'll leave the gay porn discussion to the experts. :)

  22. Heather Elaine, we get terrific comments here on the blog, but I crown yours "comment of the week." LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ha! I'm LOLing all over the place :) We should talk about gay porn more often... just kidding. Go Supernatural!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Just to be clear, if you read my comments, they are all about porn, not gay porn.

I'm no expert in gay porn. I'm merely an amateur.

And, yeah, Heather Elaine, your comment was awesome.

  25. Just to be clear, my comments were totally about gay porn. Even the ones that don't mention it.

"I'm no expert in gay porn. I'm merely an amateur."
    Nice!

  26. Heh, this had me laughing out loud!

Nice to hear that Supernatural got some highly visible recognition :)
