Renewal NewsFlash: Woo, But Not Hoo

Breaking news! In Thursday's top story, numerous renewals and a few conspicuous absences give us something to look forward to once we survive the summer television wasteland.

Most important? Community has been renewed! "Woo-hoo," you say? Nah. Just a woo, no hoo: Community only gets 13 more episodes, and our local communitarian Mark Greig predicts that bodes ill for our favorite plucky sitcom.

Castle, Once Upon a Time, Touch and Revenge have all been renewed. Alcatraz attempted to appeal its execution, but they pulled the plug on that show, too. (Yes, sometimes I mix my metaphors. It's part of my charm.) And The Finder (the completely random Fox show that is somehow linked to Bones) was also canceled. No news yet on Nikita.

Thoughts on this partial renewal/cancellation update? Let us know in the comments.

And if you manage to come up with a funnier "Alactraz got canceled" pun, let us know! I'll put the winner in an updated post.

Update on Renewals and Cancellations:

Awake: Canceled
Nikita: Renewed (and reviews are coming soon!)
Parks and Rec: Renewed
The Secret Circle: Canceled (sorry, Panda!)

Update on Bad Puns:

Alcatraz, after a short stint on the Green Mile, was electrocuted yesterday. The electrocution was made worse by the large puddle of water nearby, which caused a tragic drowning/sinking.

  1. Alcatraz got the electric chair ?

    Green mile for Alcatraz ?

    Alcatraz drowned ?

Yay for Community (it got Fringed) 13 is better than nothing. I'll sure take it.

  2. Hmm. OK. I get why Fringe got half a season to wrap up, but it seems kinda weird for a sitcom that was sort of ready to end after 4 full years anyway. Oh well, it's better than nowt!

  3. Delighted about Revenge. Apart from Homeland and American Horror Story, it's been the best new show we've had in the last seven months.

  4. I'm sorry about Alcatraz. I've actually grown to really enjoy it. I can understand the problem -- too many cases of the week and not enough tie in among them, but I was really beginning to care about the characters.

And, although I am not surprised, may I give Castle a woo and a hoo? Guess it means I'll be sticking around for another year. :-)

  5. Hey, ChrisB -- if, heaven forbid, Castle goes under, we'll find you some other very cool show to review. So many shows, so little time!

  6. I don't think you have to worry about Castle. Even when it hasn't got Dancing with the So-Called Stars as a leading in it is regularly one of ABC's strongest performers.

I've got mixed feelings about Community's renewel. I'm happy that we'll be getting 13 more episodes but I can also see them being the series last. It is unlikely that we'll see Community in the autumn. NBC will hold it back until mid-season, possibly along with the yet to be renewed but really should be Parks and Recreation, to replace any new shows that have tanked. And going by NBC's current track record that will be all of them.

  7. Billie -- thanks for giving me an "aw shucks" moment today. I needed one! :-)

  8. Stop the presses (which is a somewhat obsolete term in this digital age), NBC have renewed Parks and Recreation for another season. I'm doing my victory dance now.

  9. Yay for once upon a time and castle and revenge..I kind of knew it but it's nice to see it as well.
Lame Alcatraz pun..it's a dead man er sinking?

  11. Noooooo!

It's not surprising, but I'm still sad. Oh, well: we're reviewing all the remaining Awake episodes, because we love it.

  12. As far as shows we cover are concerned, we're only waiting now for news about Ringer and The Secret Circle, am I right? (We've got so much going on right now that I'm losing track.)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ringer must be a goner..Secret Circle is doing well right? I might give it a chance.

  14. From what I understand, Ringer is dead while the fates of The Secret Circle and Nikita have yet to be decided. Neither show is doing great in the ratings and it's 50/50 at this point.

  15. There was an article yesterday or the day before (TVbythenumbers?) that said they had info from an insider that Nikita is dead. That might mean there is more hope for Secret Circle. I think.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ringer has to go. It's awful and SMG deserves better (as well as the whole cast).

It's not covered here, but Cougar Town has been renewed and it's moving to TBS. I'm so glad. It's one of the best comedies on TV, written with charm and heart.

  18. I know Paul will be so happy with this news.

The CW has also picked up Arrow, Carrie Diaries, Beauty and the Beast, First Cut and Cult. Still nothing about The Secret Circle, though.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sorry to hear about The Finder. I actually quite liked it (though I might have been the only one). Plus it has Michael Clarke Duncan. How can you not like anything with Michael Clarke Duncan in it?

Anyway, I'm more sorry to hear about Community. 13 episodes? What kind of a half-assed renewal is that?! Better that than nothing, of course, but still!

  20. It's official: The Secret Circle and Hart of Dixie have been renewed. Ringer is cancelled.

  21. The Secret Circle has been cancelled ^

Fantastic news regarding Nikita. Also leased to see that Arrow has been picked up, not that I doubted it :)

As for Ringer.....I hope the cast move on to better things. Can't wait to forget the show ever existed.

  22. You're right, MischievousNinja. TV Line misreported it on Twitter as renewed.

  23. It's a woohoo day for me! I'm glad the CW realised that they have a really good show in Nikita

    ReplyDelete
  24. Great news about Nikita -- it's been totally kicking ass lately. Not so great news about The Secret Circle -- I think it probably deserved another season. And I'm pretty devastated about Awake. Oh well...[insert well meaning but ultimately meaningless stiff upper lip type saying here]

    ReplyDelete
  25. Too bad about Awake! It just started here, but I am already loving it.

But (and I can hear the sniggers now), I'm happy, happy about another season of Hart of Dixie.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm not sniggering, Chris. I'm clapping my hands really fast and gurgling contentedly.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Will everyone please stop dangling the car keys in front of Paul? He gets so unmanageable.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Gage flyne kite, Mommy... Gage flyne kite!

  29. I'm really disappointed about The Secret Circle being cancelled; but maybe now someone will put Gale Harold on something that makes it past the freshman season? I would LOVE to see him on something like White Collar or True Blood.

I honestly think it's time for the CW to axe 90210 or Gossip Girl. Ed Westwick is seriously the only reason, okay, one of two reasons why I still watch that show.

And not very surprisingly, Pan Am has been officially cancelled.

But dangling shiny car keys in front of Paul is what I live for?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Gossip Girl is only coming back for 11 episodes.

Surprised its lasted this long, tbh. Aside from poor viewing figures, some of the cast have been making noises about moving on for a few years now.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Goodbye Ringer-I hope all involved will go on to better things. Especially SMG.
Too bad about Secret Circle-I want there to be a show about witches. I miss Charmed-there I said it. Sure it was cheesy-but good cheese-IMHO.

  32. Disappointed about The Secret Circle (even though, tbh, it wasn't that great) but REALLY choked about Awake.

It should also be mandatory for cancelled shows to have "what WOULD have happened next" posted somewhere on the internet for fans, to answer all remaining questions!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I just got really ticked off because apparently we would have had Brian Kinney-esque Gale Harold in season two of The Secret Circle.
My friend surmised that any show that does not have a shirtless Gale Harold is not going to work, such as Hellcats and now TSC.

I'm going to go listen to Celine Dion and cry now.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Happy on Nikita, sad on The Finder and Secret Circle

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nikita renewed! YAY! Great news!
    Ringer cancelled! YAY!Great news!

Really sad about Awake... Bad! Bad! Bad decision!
And somewhat sad about Alcatraz, I actually liked it, oh well....

    ReplyDelete
  36. "Ringer cancelled! YAY!Great news!"

Haha! Nice one, Olga. That made me laugh. I was talking to a friend of mine over the weekend about how bad Ringer is -- so she watched an episode out of curiosity, and now she loves it. I feel like I just addicted a five year old to cigarettes, whist simultaneously standing on a puppy's tale.

  37. I tried to open the review of the CW Nikita pilot but the link says the page doesn't exist.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ha! I know the feeling, Paul :)

But there are a lot of people (well I know quite a few) who actually liked it a lot. I think all of us here just have this little pleasant hobby to chew every little aspect of shows we watch and love (or hate but must watch anyway out of some weird sense of self-torture), most people just watch and don't bother noticing all this nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  39. spritl, the review of the CW Nikita pilot was taken down because the person who wrote it left us and asked that we take down all of his reviews.

But the good news is that, now that it's getting a third season, our new writer Nadim is taking on Nikita and will be doing retro reviews this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Shame about that. I still can't get over CW cancelling The Secret Circle for that crap.

    ReplyDelete
  41. http://popwatch.ew.com/2012/05/11/secret-circle-canceled-gale-harold/

A hint of what the showrunners planned for Season 2 and it would have been brilliant. Though I'm not so sure about Adam/Melissa but I admit the chemistry is there. Dawn as an elder and sexy Charles would be awesome!

  42. *Ringer cancelled? bof, don't care I signed oout months ago!
    *Secret Circle cancelled? Snif!
*The Finder cancelled!??!?! GRRRRRR!!! I was having so much fun with that show!!!

    *Nikita renewed? Yay!
    *Hart of Dixie renewed? YAY!!!

And I think Castle will go on for ever... as long as the people involved want it to ;o)
(or at least until we get the entire cast of Firefly on there!)
