Last week, Dear Readers, you astonished, amazed, and astounded us with the nuanced way you responded to our very low-brow question of which TV actress is the sexiest of them all. While no clear winner emerged (did we expect one to?), it was a great discussion that once again proved you are the best readers on the internet.
This week: same challenge, different gender. Which TV actor (or character) is no-holds-barred, drive-you-crazy, you-want-to-cover-him-in-chocolate-syrup-and-lick-it-off sexy, no matter what your usual orientation might be?
While the picture may give away my number one choice, an easy second (oh, if only he were easy!) is Wesley Wyndam-Pryce from Buffy and Angel.

I've been thinking about this for a week and trying to come up with a list of things that I look for in a man. Turns out, I can be as shallow as the next person when it comes to sheer physical hotness -- you know, the bad boys you don't necessarily want to spend a great deal of time with, but a dirty weekend is not off the cards. This list includes Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Alexander Skarsgard, Ian Somerhalder, Kiefer Sutherland and James Marsters. Like I said, not for the long term.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to men that I would like to actually get to know and spend time with, more important than sheer physical beauty is brains and humour, but it doesn’t hurt that they are easy on the eyes. This brings me to Scott Porter, Patrick Dempsey, Alex O’Loughlin, Michael Vartan, Joshua Jackson, Timothy Olyphant and Tom Welling.
There is, in my opinion, one perfect man now on television. Yes, I understand that he is a fictional character, but who wouldn't want a guy who is wicked smart, a good writer, rich, generous, funny as hell, nice to his mother and a great father. I've said it before and I'll say it again -- Nathan Fillion, the sexiest man alive.
Interesting that some folks have just named characters, whereas last week it seemed like more people were naming the actresses. Hmmm ...
ReplyDeleteJosh Holloway (Sawyer, Lost), Alexis Denisof (Wesley, Angel, after he got all dark and edgy), Joe Flanigan (John Sheppard, Stargate: Atlantis), and Jensen Ackles (Dean, Supernatural). And Chris just reminded me about Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime, Game of Thrones).
Once again I see common threads, both physically and psychologically. A bit scruffy or rugged, tough, emotional damaged and vulnerable in many ways, a tendency to be reserved in expressing true emotion, basically good deep down and ultimately striving to be better (I guess this remains to be seen for Jaime). Jensen is probably a bit "prettier" than what I'm usually drawn to, but Dean makes up for it in excess emotional damage.
What's really interesting is that my "television type" doesn't seem to match my actual type. My husband has some similar physical characteristics to these guys, but in most other ways is very, very different. Emotional damage is not so appealing in real-life. Shocking, right? :)
He's not on my list, despite my appreciation for Captain Tightpants, but I just knew that Nathan Fillion would be showing up in a lot of comments this week.

Tahmoh Pennikett. Hands down the sexiest maple-syrup covered hunk of lovin’ on the big or small screen at the moment. Those piercing green eyes, that chiselled jaw, 2 words people – hubba hubaa. That luscious Muay Thai sculpted body ain’t too shabby either, but I don’t want to appear shallow. He’s been great I everything of his I’ve managed to see, from Helo in BSG through Paul in Dollhouse to Maddox in Castle (any other TP recommendations more than welcome though). Having said that I still wouldn’t say no to a piece of Nathan action, particularly in character as Captain Tightpants, but he even did it for me as Caleb, how many corners of wrong is that? Come to think of it, the pair of them are supposed to be in the next season of Castle – they may even share some scenes. I've been thinking about this for a week as have many of you. This is a tough question. If I only had to choose one, I would have to choose Michael C. Hall (Dexter) because I have seen him act in a variety of roles and I know the depths of his abilities as far as that goes. All of his characters are sexy. (He did a song and dance bit in a horrible movie called "Gamer" that is worth seeing just for that.)

Sunday nights (for now) is Joe Mangianello. Closely followed by Alexander Skarsgard.
I also love Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), James Marsters (Buffy), and I agree with many of the other comments that Nathan Fillion is the sexiest man alive.
I have very broad taste in men. For example, I don't think there's been a regular or recurring male character on Supernatural that I wouldn't jump if given the chance.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I have to go with the majority and give the nod to Nathan Fillion. He is just amazing. And his parents were English teachers. And he loves to read. (True, his choices are sometimes pedestrian, but he reads. He reads!).
Does he love animals? He must, right? That would make him pretty much perfect. I love my SO, but if I met Nathan Fillion and he fell madly in love with me, I would kick my SO's butt to the curb, and there is no other actor/character I would do that for, not even George Clooney (what's the big deal with him, anyway).

I had to think about this one, and it was so much fun thinking about this one.
ReplyDeleteMy three past favorites, and they were huge faves of mine for years -- Methos on Highlander (Peter Wingfield), Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation (Patrick Stewart) and Michael on La Femme Nikita (Roy Dupuis). There was something about the combination of the actor and the character that made them super special to me.
Current favorites are
1. Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester on Supernatural, and same comment as above about the combination of the actor and the character. As Jess said so eloquently, Jensen is way too pretty, but Dean makes up for it in excess emotional baggage. There's something compelling about Dean Winchester, who is genuinely heroic while lacking self-esteem.
2. John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, and again, it's the actor/character combination. I love that as an immortal, he's eternally interested in the world and enjoying change, much like Methos. Jack has such joie de vivre. There aren't a lot of actors out there who could pull off an omnisexual character and make it work, but he absolutely does.
3. Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens. He's a bit like Dean Winchester with the genuinely heroic but world weary thing, and his dry wit just does it for me. And I love the way he walks.
4. I'm also fond of actor Alex O'Loughlin, no matter what he's in.
Honorable mention to the guy who is clearly going to be a big favorite here -- Nathan Fillion. One of my biggest regrets was being in the same room with him back in 2004 and not getting up the nerve to speak to him. To be fair, it was long before Castle and I hadn't even seen Firefly; all I'd seen him in was the final five episodes of Buffy, where his character was pretty much terrifying. I'm still kicking myself.
Seeing Nicholas Brendon in speedos was the moment the penny finally dropped and I realised I was gay but it was always Oz who I crushed over more.
ReplyDeleteFor my money BSG had the most sensationally good-looking cast of pretty much any TV programme. You've got Jamie Bamber for sheer muscular wonder (Final Cut anyone?) Tahmoh Penikett for film star good looks and Aaron Douglas for his beautifully beary physique.
Continuing with the bear/cub theme, I think Russell Tovey and Max Adler are both gorgeous and with Tovey's characters there's a wonderful emotional openness (George from Being Human is one of my favourite fantasy characters of all time).
A relatively recent one is Arthur Darvill as Rory Williams. I love Rory, he's rivalling River Song as my favourite Who character and in his case it's all about the personality (though the looks aren't bad).

Sing, act, dance, walk, breathe, STRIP, he seriously can do it all. He is seriously my #1, and my Tumblr can back me up with that.
ReplyDelete#2 would be a toss-up between Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Jack Gleeson. I know Joffrey is a bit of a tosser, but Jack is just amazing and it's sad how he gets hated on just because of his character on Game of Thrones. Nikolaj just because he's the perfect Prince Charming.
#3 would be a tie between Grant Gustin, Darren Criss and Chris Colfer. I'm going to be watching A Mother's Nightmare for Grant and I am going to definitely by Chris' book when it comes out. And Darren is just a goober and I love him.
I seriously had to condense my list of guys. If I wrote out my entire list it would have been over 150 guys.

---I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the original Hot Vampire Boyfriend: Angel. Yes, David Boreanez has gotten a little older and jowlier, but remember those pecs he had when he was younger.
---Speaking of Hot Vampire Boyfriends, Stefan Salvatore deserves some love. Yes, Damon is much hotter, but Stefan can be pretty adorable. In fact, any male cast member from VD should pretty much automatically be on this list.

#1 - Roy Dupuis as Michael Samuelle in La Femme Nikita. Mon dieu! Nobody else has really come close to knocking him off my all-time top spot. As Michael, he was gorgeous and dangerous at the same time, and too cool for school in a show that was way ahead of its time. So many magical moments, and his eyes, his voice, his mouth, the way he said Nikita's name during tender moments ("Kee-Tah"). Oh. My. Word. *swoons* *faints* *wakes up drooling*
#2 - David Duchovny as Fox Mulder in The X Files. So snarky, so sexy. And he rocked that black suit and tie any day of the week.
#3 - Michael Weatherley as Logan "Eyes Only" Cale in Dark Angel. It was the stubble. Or maybe the glasses. Yum!
#4 - Scott Foley as Noel Crane in Felicity. He was such a honey, I could've just had him for breakfast.
#5 - David James Elliott as Harmon Rabb in JAG. Give me strength! Loved the combination of masculinity and vulnerability. And those dress whites... *mops brow*
CURRENT FAVES
#1 - Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester in Supernatural. He's a bit of a lost soul, isn't he? Tough as nails on the outside and a big ole pile of jelly in the middle. Dean just needs some love. C'mon over, hot stuff :)
#2 - Joe Manganiello as Alcide Herveaux in True Blood. That toned torso should be declared a weapon of mass attraction.
#3 - Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory *geek alert* I know he's not the tall, dark and handsome type in the traditional sense, but I fancy his brain. It's a kind of cerebral lust, I suppose.
#4 - Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister on Game Of Thrones. Such a talented actor and such a nice guy in real life. And he injects Tyrion with a nuanced mix of pathos and pride which I find fascinating to watch.
#5 - Andy Whitfield as Spartacus on Spartacus: Blood & Sand. Sadly, this rising star died after a battle with cancer, but wasn't he a joy to watch on the sandals-and-swords epic?
HONOURABLE MENTION
Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries) for his brooding portrayal of the tortured vamp. And the (very popular it seems) Nathan Fillion from Castle. To borrow a line from Steve Carrell's character in Crazy Stupid Love, he is "the perfect combination of sexy and cute". And that's what I find so charming in a man *sigh*
This is turning into quite a list. More than once, I have thought, "how could I have forgotten [fill in the blank]?" We certainly are spoilt for choice.

Jim Cavizel - I think this choice is more influenced by the character he is currently playing in POI.
Richard Dean Anderson - He's Macgyver and Colonel O'Neil, so both cerebral and action. :)
I'll agree with other people's votes for Matt Bomer. I like his con man Neal Caffrey in White Collar.

ReplyDeleteI'm sure I have forgotten so many others. If we turned this into a list of "characters you'd do" I could be here all night.
I can't remember his name because I was never an Angel fan, but that green demon guy was kind of hot in his own way. And I remember that Oz always got my motor running, too. Speaking of Oz (the tv show about prisoners, not the hot werewolf), the guy who now plays Mayhem in the insurance commercials is also on my short list, which seems to be growing longer by the second.
Since I don't find guys attractive and don't really like sex appeal, I'm going to contribute with something else. Here is a list of my top 10 favourite, awesomest, coolest, most distinctive and great male actor voices. In other words the voices of male actors that I love the most, even if I'm not attracted to the actor themselves.

1. Christopher Lee. His voice is practically a cultural icon. Whether it's Count Dracula or Saruman, when he speaks you know it's him.
2. Vincent Price. Come on, it's Vincent Price! His voice is like the embodiment of creepy horror. He can make a discussion about the weather sound like something from Edgar Allan Poe. Stephen Fry did a wonderful impression of him on QI that cracked me up.
3. Simon Templeman. Granted I'm going off his portrayal of Kain from the Blood Omen and Soul Reaver games, but y'all will probably know him better as evil ghost Pavayne from an episode in the last season of Angel. Makes everything sound dramatic.
4. Patrick Stewart. Star Trek's Captain Picard. His voice is so great he's done like a million voice overs for things. Is it any wonder?
5. Michael Tatum. I'm mainly going on his voicing of anime character Sebastian from Black Butler, but just listen to him and tell me that isn't a syrupy ear candy voice if ever you heard one. Yum.
6. Charles Martinet. Okay I'm cheating here, because he only really does video games, but he's the voice actor for Mario! Mario! Actually the reason I list him here is because of his voicing of Homunculus from Shadow of Memories. Gives me the shivers. In a good way. Go look up a youtube clip and I'm sure you'll see why. If it was possible to fall in love with a voice then that would do it for me.
7. John de Lancie. Another Trek actor, I think his voice really stands out. Plus he voiced the villain Discord in My Little Pony and he made the character all the more sinister for it.
8. Roger L. Jackson. Apparently he's best known for voicing Ghostface from the Scream movies, but my favourite role was him doing the Cheshire Cat from the American McGee Alice games. Puurrrfect!
9. Steve Blum. This guy's voice is all over the place, and I'm not surprised. Probably my favourite role was him as Spike from Cowboy Bebop. Despite being less famous than the likes of Chris Lee and Patrick Stewart, I still instantly recognise his voice, and think it's just great.
10. Sean Pertwee. I think Matt Smith is great as Doctor Who, but I remember that Sean Pertwee was once considered as the next Doctor, and that would have been fantastic. Not only is he a good actor, but his voice is brilliant as well.
Sorry if it that's too off-topic, but I wanted to contribute something. Anyway, voices can be appealing and attractive too!
I had trouble narrowing it down for sexiest woman, so didn't end up commenting (I'm a big Billie Doux fan and reader, though rarely comment), but I have to contribute to this one!
ReplyDeleteMy number one at the moment, and one who I'd fall for in real life, is Jeff Winger (Joel McHale). He is the perfect balance of extremes for me, keeping me amused and intrigued!! Not to mention those moments when he whips off his shirt!
But a close second has to go as a tie to Joe Manganiello and Alex O'Loughlin. But then how can one choose between early Angel, Stefan Salvatore, and the delightful Kit Harington as Jon Snow?! Too many choices.

I find it so fascinating that these guys are exactly the opposite of what I'm looking for in real life. Emotionally damaged morally ambiguous man child? Mass-murdering vampire with addiction issues? Brilliant but psychotic asshole? No thank you. I have never dated or even been interested in anyone remotely like this in real life. But for some reason these guys drive me crazy! It's completely ridiculous. Am I fulfilling some secret need to let lose and make bad decisions that I'm too smart to make in reality? Perhaps. I don't think it's the "bad boy needs saving" thing. As I'm completely head over heels for Mitchell, I'm simultaneously yelling at the screen "Don't do it Annie!! He'll break your heart! He's a crazy psycho killer!" I seriously have no good explanation. Any smarter brains have a good reason for this good-girl-loves-pretend-bad-boys syndrome I have going?
Not really..just it's safer then loving real bad boys..they can't really hurt you and break your heart if they don't exist. I'm also yelling at Annie to leave Mitchell but sorta hoping she wont..she's a ghost maybe she'll be ok..

In fact, all the characters of this list have these characteristics. I think what makes a character (man) sexy is a combination of that all.

I forgot an honourable mention to Timothy Olyphant, just fabulous is anything he does (I even managed to sit through Hitman thanks to his screen presence, and for those of you that haven't seen the film let me tell you - it sucks BIG time)but particularly as Raylan Givens - he may be the angriest man in Harlan but he is sure as hell also the sexiest. I'm also feeling incredibly shallow as my last post concentrated on the mentioned the total hotness of my choices and failed to actually reference their talent at all..... Ah, who am I kidding, I AM shallow and it IS all about the hotness. I’m also sorry to say that I’m feeling VERY old reading some of these suggestions – Grant Gustin is indeed delicious and a numny treat, but I just feel odd lusting after someone who is, in reality, young enough to be my son. SO. That then begs the question, is a middle aged woman (40 is middle aged, right?) too old to be hanging out at a site like this? God I hope not, although I may be a serial loiterer and only occasional poster this site is one of my faves, so please tell me you embrace the wrinklies as well as the young and cool……

ReplyDeleteSeriously, have you ever been to a sci-fi convention? I've been to my share of cons, and the attendees are very much the sort of people who hang out here. And yes, there are a lot of young guys, as you might expect. But pretty much every demographic is strongly represented, and that includes a lot of women, younger and older. The writers here on the site are a pretty diverse group, too, and that includes age as well as nation of origin. I'm a woman and the site founder here, and while I tend to be coy about my exact age, it's no secret that I'm not a kid. So don't feel odd. I certainly don't. :)
CatherineJ -- don't worry about your age! I have a fair few years on you and some of the men I mentioned are well and truly young enough to be my child. In fact, with the exception of James Marsters, every one of them is younger than I.

My final age-appropriate additions are Alexis Denisof (post Lilah Wesley -I loved him mean before Fred softened him up again)and Tony Head - I always had the serious hots for Giles obviously, but for the Brits amongst you his voice as Mr Gently Benevolent on Radio 4 gets me every time.

I don't care what anybody says, but James Spader. And I'm not even talking "man-crush", I'm talking pretty much "yes, I would have sex with him". Gah.
ReplyDeleteIt's both a "god, that man is perfect" thing as well as "god, I really want to be that man" thing. He's always had this intense sexual charisma on-screen, immediate chemistry with everybody he shares the camera with and always plays these rogue-ish, ambiguous and sort of sinister individuals.
He's so charismatic that I saw Pretty in Pink when I was about 14 and demanded his big poofy mullet hair for myself. "Spader can pull that off, so I think I can, too!" I was terribly, terribly wrong. But, whatever, he's the hotness.
Even now, when he's balding and schlubby and seemingly averse to working out, he's absolutely the complete embodiment of masculine sex appeal.
I totally need a therapist, right?
