About Us: Drnanamom

Dear readers, here is the next installment in our About Us Interview series: Drnanamom, also known as Sandy.

Drnanamom reviews The Walking Dead, Alphas, and Haven.

What area of the world do you live in, and what do you do? (Because we all know you don't make any money doing this.)

I am a Canadian living in Southern Ontario, which is the most populated part of our country. Our weather is similar to a huge chunk of the United States but our vibe is more like California. Who knows how laid back we’d be if we had more sun! I teach at a university and mostly love it.

If we just handed you a million dollars (you never know), what would you spend it on?

I know everyone else has been very altruistic but I would spend it on a piece of land in the country, a tiny, eco-sensitive, off-the-grid house to make up for the Airstream trailer and truck I would buy. I would travel with whatever was left over, which means I would probably have to retire or I wouldn’t have time.

What random skill would our readers be surprised to know you have?

I’m a so-so potter. I just made some very small but very awesome Raku bottles. I have also managed to make the odd serviceable bowl and mug.

Are you a dog person or a cat person, or is there another animal involved?

I am very much a dog person, which I know puts me in the minority. Unfortunately, I just recently lost my canine life-partner Liliane. She was an American Stratfordshire Terrier (a pitbull) and she was the sweetest dog I have ever met.

What show would recommend everyone finally get around to watching this summer?

Well, I am a huge fan of Doctor Who and Torchwood, but anyone who is anyone has already seen that, right? So I’m going to say Farscape. Sci-fi with Muppets. Need I say more?

Of all the shows we don't cover, list your: (1) guilty pleasure, (2) favorite reality show, and (3) favorite from childhood.

1) Guilty pleasure: Grey’s Anatomy. I know it’s terrible but you did say guilty.

2) Favourite reality show: So You Think You Can Dance, both the American and Canadian. I really don’t like reality TV, but at least I get some interesting music and dance with this show. Mary Murphy drives me crazy though.

3) Favourite from Childhood: Original Star Trek. It looks corny now, but it was cutting-edge when I was a kid. It encouraged me to dream of other possibilities. We played Star Trek in the vacant lot in our suburb. I was always Mr. Spock.

Fill in the blanks: If ___ weren't already reviewing ___, I'd want to do it.

If Billie weren’t already reviewing Supernatural, I’d want to do it. It is such a fun show and I actually did a guest review at some point.

Which character do you identify with the most?

It is hard to find kick-ass, superhero moms who are educators on television or even in movies. I’m sure everyone will now come up with dozens but I can’t think of one I identify with so I will have to go with Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica (new version), if she had some children.

What's your favorite television show of all time? (Okay, top five will do if you can't narrow it down to one.)

Doctor Who/Torchwood
Battlestar Galactica
Babylon 5
Farscape
Buffy/Firefly

I know I’m cheating, but I can’t take any of these off the list. If I had more space I would start adding Star Trek in its many incarnations.

You are hosting a dinner party for 8 TV characters and/or actors. Who would you invite?

In no particular order, I would invite: John Cavil, one of Cylons in Battlestar Galactica, played by Dean Stockwell (I would debate the nature of humanity with John Cavil and just hang out with Dean Stockwell as I enjoy his acting); Malcolm Reynolds aka Nathon Fillion – both of them are hilarious and handsome; Captain Jack played by John Barrymore, no explanation necessary; Doctor Who, both David Tennant and Matt Smith versions, so we could discuss the differences and similarities; Laura Roslin aka Mary McDonnell also from Battlestar Galactica, for the same reasons as John Cavil; Aeryun Sun from Farscape because she is a rebel and her own woman; and finally Zoe Washburn from Firefly played by Gina Torres. She is the woman I would most like to identify with on television, but I am not tall enough or tough enough to get even close.

Next week: Me! (Josie)

  1. What a fun interview, Drnanamom!

I'm so sorry to hear about Liliane, though. Losing a pet is so hard, and we just don't have the social rituals in place to make it easier, either.

Would Snow White on Once Upon a Time count as a kick-ass, superhero mom? She is an educator. :-)

  2. In many ways, you are a woman after my own heart, Doc. :) So, can I recommend Tami Taylor (Friday Night Lights) as your person to most identify with (she's mine)? She's a mom and an educator. She's also a hero to many of the kids she helps. Perhaps she doesn't physically kick ass, like Aeryn or Zoe, but she has some pretty impressive powers of her own. Just watch her throw together a last-minute enormous barbeque or charm the Gatlin folks into a better hotel situation for the traveling football team! And she always fights for what she believes in. She's a kick-ass superhero to me. :)

Can you record your debates with John Cavil and Laura Roslin? They'd be fascinating, I'm sure.

  5. Josie :

I've just finished watching ep # 107 "the Moth" from my Lost (kinda) marathon. Whoah. I often bragged about character development in these pages. Yours truly is very, very happy so far.

And ChrisB recently commenting on all the episodes at the beginning of season 1??! Whoah, prise deux. (no I haven't read the reviews; fudge ! I work full time ! I need to retire. NOW !)

You guys are making my neurons burn up ! Have to put my head in a bucket filled with water and ice LOL

  6. I am fluent in both PC and Mac. I have a desktop and laptop in each. I know that is way too many computers but you wouldn't believe the number of hats I have to wear! And I really got sick of lugging laptops back and forth to my jobs.

  7. LOL

wow, thanks for the fast reply ! So am I (fluent) but PC at work and Mac at home. Way better. I've said my goodbyes to Mister Gates. And dogs (and cats) look better on an HD screen. My sympathies for your pet.

And do NOT forget me when that supper will be ready....

  8. I'm tentatively in the market for a new laptop (my current one is due for its planned-obsolescence death soon), and I'm thinking about switching to a Mac.

But they're *so* expensive, and I hate the idea of having to learn a new OS.

  9. Josie

Yes they are BUT their OS is spectacularly stable, compared to Windows (Sorry Bill). No viruses, and the OS is not that hard (nor different) to learn. (instead of going left to right, you go the other way) 3 or 4 questions to a colleague and I was on my own, after roughly one week and a half.

And they have a version of MS Office. And Firefox runs smoothly. Pure bliss on my side since I made the switch.

And I love both cats and dogs, but the former get the gold medal.

  10. Am loving these interviews with you guys! But you're all driving me nuts with these dinner plans! How can I get an invite to ALL of them? ;o)

Sorry to hear about your dog Sandy! My family's dog (our second) just died a couple of months ago and it was VERY hard... it's amazing how those four-legged-furry critters sneak in and latch on to your soul!

  11. I loved this! We have a lot in common.

I had to decide between a JD and a PhD and very nearly went with the latter because I wanted to teach. I'm still convinced that one day I'll do it. (I'm a bit of an education junkie -- more degrees than are good for me.)

I had to put my black lab down this past year. I'm so sorry for your loss. Cris is right -- they do become a huge part of your life!

    Again, I loved reading this.

  12. Laura Roslin is a good choice for your identity question, Sandy. Some people hated her, but I always thought she had moxy. I liked her =)
