Newsflash: Man of Steel Teaser(s)

Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's...a fisherman? Huh, can't say I was expecting that. It's been six years since Superman Returns failed to restart the franchise (I liked it, but can see why people had issues with it), so now Warner Bros. is having another go at bring the last son of Krypton back to the big screen with Man of Steel.

Unlike Returns, which was meant to be a quasi-sequel to Richard Donner's film, Man of Steel will be a complete reboot, with The Tudors' Henry Cavill slipping into the famous tights and Zach Snyder directing. To coincide with the release of The Dark Knight Rises, the studio has released the first teasers for the film. Yes, teasers. Although that is overselling it slightly as these teaser are virtually identical, differing only in who provides the voice-over. The first has Kevin Coster as Sups' adopted father, Jonathan Kent (holy perfect casting, Batman!), while the second features Russell Crowe as his bio dad, Jor-El.

Neither teaser is that awe-inspiring. At first I was worried that I clicked the wrong link and was watching a promo for a First Blood remake. It certainly looks like Snyder is going for a more grounded, Nolan-ish look with this film (Superman even has beard). But so far I've yet to be impressed. What do you all think, faithful readers?

  1. This looks good. But I'm just not a Superman fan. [Ducks, runs for cover.] Maybe if the reboot introduces some moody introspection I'll like it more.

  2. I think the teasers did just that, piqued my interest.

I also think it looks good and I agree with you that it looks like Snyder is following in Nolan's footsteps and grounding the character ala the Dark Knight.

Don't know if that's the way to go as Superman and Batman are exact opposites. Batman operates from the shadows and uses fear as a weapon. Superman operates in the light and is meant to inspire. Look at their respective cities, Gotham City - dark and crime plagued versus Metropolis - bright and future looking.

Still, I'm looking forward to see what the did in the reboot. And this is all rumored to be leading to a JLA movie, possibly.

  3. Dunno how I feel about this one, other than to say THANK YOU for bringing more Henry Cavill to my screen! ;o)

I think they work well as a teaser though...

  4. I don't know about anyone else but I'm tired of comic book movies being all serious and realistic. What's wrong with being fun and fantastical? Personally I hope when the inevitably reboot the Batman series, the Music Meister is the main villain. I can't be the only one calling out for a Batman musical, can I?

  5. I'm fond of Superman, and I'm one of the people who really loved Brandon Routh in the cape, so I was bummed that he didn't get a second chance. But hey, if it's good, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

  6. Personally, I think the teaser(s) are very effective at doing just that, making me curious about the movie. I also thought the voice-overs were well done, especially Costner's. Jor-El's narration about how he will help lead humanity into the sun was ok. But it was Jonathan Kent talking about Clark having to make a choice, what sort of man he will be, and that whatever he decides, he's going to change the world. That's a heavy burden for anyone's shoulders, even Superman's.

  7. Looks like more grim darkness for the sake of grim darkness. I'll stick with the Marvel Movieverse which is way more upbeat. I'm done with gritty and ready for the Silver Age again.
