Doux News: October 14, 2012

This week: Community delayed – Dr. Horrible 2Arrow – Trouble for the Munsters – And more heartache for Doctor Who fans.

The big news this week – and the most distressing – was that NBC has decided to delay its decision to move Community to the Friday Night Death Slot. The under-appreciated jewel in the network's comedy crown was set to return on October 19th, but the powers that be at the peacock have now confirmed that that won't happen. There is some speculation that NBC will move the series to another night to replace a failing show. But for the time being, our beloved study group (and Pierce) are currently in television limbo. Time to don those fake goatees.

Voting is now open for this year's TV Guide Fan Favourites Cover poll. Community was last year's winner and was rewarded with three very lovely covers. The list of nominees this year includes Doctor Who, Fringe, Grimm, Parks and Recreation, Spartacus, The Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead. Voting closes Sunday, October 28th at midnight Pacific Time.

Arrow, The CW's Smallville spin-off that isn't really a Smallville spin-offgot off to a fantastic start this week delivering 4.02 million total viewers and a 1.3 demo rating (whatever that means, this whole demo thing just confuses me). If these numbers hold up, a full season pick up can't be far off. And it is a safe bet that the network's gritty Wonder Woman reboot, Amazon, will go into production soon.

Looks like we'll have to wait a little bit longer for that sequel to Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Co-writer Maurissa Tancharoen, who is currently working on Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. series for Marvel, has said that “We’re working on it… The goal is that we are going to be shooting next year, and getting the script and everything done at the end of this year. So that is something that we’re actually physically working on now. We’ll invent something that will make our lives difficult, but we’ll also have a grand time doing it.”

Mockingbird Lane, NBC's expensive reboot of The Munsters, appears to be in trouble. After being in development for two years, the network is said to be unhappy with the finished product. There has also been talk of creative differences behind the scenes between writer Bryan Fuller and the pilot's director Bryan Singer over the style of the show. The $10 million pilot will now air as a one off Halloween special. If it does well it could lead to a potential series. But we've heard that before.

And finally, a little something for Doctor Who fans still struggling with the departure of the Ponds two weeks ago. Written by Chris Chibnall and featuring the vocal talents of Arthur Darvill, 'P.S.' is the unshot epilogue from ‘The Angels Take Manhattan’, which let’s us know what happened to Rory’s dad, Brian, and The Ponds. You can watch it here. Be warned: tears will be shed.

  1. You did a great job with Doux News this week, Mark. I absolutely knew what you were going to lead with, and I suspected the evil goatees would make an appearance. :)

Too bad Dr. Horrible the sequel will have to wait, but another Joss Whedon series is worth it. Further proof that Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day are coolness personified -- they live-tweeted the west coast feed of Dr. Horrible on Tuesday here in the states.

  2. Billie,

I've just found out about Community's delay a few hours before Mark's post. SOB ! The former web site on which you used to work says November 1st (Imbd is still on this 19th though). Arrrgggh, hate that. It BETTER be WORTH the extra wait. SOB !

Hum, Thursday ? Against Glee ?

    b) Hum, yes, I can take another Dr Horrible anytime. And I'm sorry about Bryan Fuller and his problems on the set : I just love his Wonderfalls, Dead like me and Pushing Daisies.

I'd have supper with him and Joss Whedon and a few TV authors & actors anytime. And I'd be more than happy to wash the dishes for a week.

  3. Hey folks, don't know where else to put this so I'll stick it here.

Red Dwarf seems like the sort of thing you guys would watch, and cover if it were still on, so just thought I'd let you know that it's been back for the last two weeks. Don't know if its viewable in the USA, but you can find it via nefarious torrenty means, ad it's very nearly back to it's best

  5. Also, Coulson's joining S.H.I.E.L.D.? Wondering if it's just flashbacks, or if Fury faked his death.

  6. Katie, TVLine quotes Joss as saying that the show is "autonomous" from the movies, somehow.

  7. Great job, Mark.

Interesting about Community. I've been working on the second part of my fall shows article and NBC has had a good start to the year. Their only real "failure" is Animal Practice. Everything else they've debuted has (a) either already been picked up for the year, (b) has numbers that indicate it might [Guys with Kids] or (c) it's too early to tell [Chicago Fire].

  8. I have mixed feelings about whether the TATM epilogue should have been included in the actual episode. On the one hand, I though Rory was given short shrift in terms of goodbyes, so a coda from him might have redressed the balance. On the other, Arthur did sound like he was phoning it in somewhat. Maybe it was just a recording of a rehearsal, or something. Marvellously touching, though.

  9. Thanks, everyone.

Katie, flashbacks would be my guess too. Joss is not the sort of write to retcon a character's death.
