Movie News, November 2012

[We're hoping to post Movie News once a month from here on out.]

Due to the nature of this article, several potential spoilers are contained within.

Let's start with superheroes, because they seem to be everywhere right now.

Iron Man 3 has a spectacular new trailer out, which makes the movie look extremely dark. And the trailer finally confirms that The Mandarin (a long time Iron Man top tier baddie) is going to have a significant role.

Casting is already underway for a new romantic interest for Captain America in the sequel (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) scheduled to release in 2014. Also a new bad guy has been teased, Crossbones who was a part of the comic-book story that eventually lead to Captain America's death a couple of years ago.

In Amazing Spider-man 2 news, casting rumors abound about who's going to play Mary Jane Watson, and how big of a role she's going to have. It appears as though they are setting up a three movie plot involving Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy and her comic-book fate. Also there is a rumor that the second-movie's bad guy is going to be Electro, but what makes that rumor interesting is the talk that Jamie Foxx is supposedly attached to the role.

In totally expected X-Men: Days of Future Past news, Brian Singer is back in the director's chair for this new entry into the series. That is supposedly going to bridge the gap between X-Men: First Class and the X-Men trilogy (X-Men Origins: Wolverine is no longer considered canon for the franchise). Along with Singer getting signed on, there are also rumors of returning actors such as Patrick Stewart and Femke Janssen. With First Class being phenomenal, and the rumors that this sequel is going to involve a cool time-travel plot, I'm starting to get excited about this franchise again.

Other stuff:

Robocop has been pushed back to February 2014.  At least that gives it more time to finish up special effects, because the black robot suit that has been in recent behind-the-scenes pictures is pretty awful looking.

I can't believe this one, but Arnold Schwarzenegger has just joined production on an official sequel to Conan the Barbarian, pushing aside the original sequel (Conan the Destroyer) and the recent reboot with Jason Momoa. It is set to pick up decades after the original movie, using Arnold's own age as a plot detail. Additionally it looks like they are going to fast track this, with an ambitious release date of Summer 2014.

The Evil Dead remake has an extremely bloody first trailer, and after watching it, I can't detect anything remotely tied to the original story. Except for some stuff alluding to a girl getting possessed by a demon, and the Necronomicon.

Mark Grieg posted a wonderful James Bond Retrospective (Part 1 of 2) before the twenty-third entry (Skyfall) is released in the U.S. this week. In related news, there is a persistent rumor that the next actor that might be stepping into Bond's shoes might be none other than Idris Elba (Thor, The Wire, Luther, Prometheus).

Chronicle 2 seems to be stuck in limbo because the studio wants the director/writer to make the exact same movie again.

Terminator 5 seems to be underway again, and I have absolutely no idea when or if this will ever see the light of day. But there seems to be some noise around the quote "The future is not set, there's no fate but what we make for ourselves" and the studio promises that news is coming soon about this sequel... I'm holding my breath.

Of course, the biggest recent movie news is Disney's purchase of Lucafilm, and the press release that we have another Star Wars movie trilogy coming. The first will be Episode VII, tentatively planned to show up in 2015. Which makes that a busy year, what with Avengers 2 and Justice League already set to be released that summer as well. The bright side is that Disney is very fiercely protective of its brands, and promised to keep Star Wars the way it has kept Marvel (which might be a really good thing) and will draw upon the twenty thousand year extended canon for future stories.  (Hopefully, that means we won't see Darth Goofy, except for above.) Additionally, it looks as though Lucas is going to sink the four billion (yes, with a B) from the sale of Lucasfilm into a foundation that will be used for philanthropic endeavors. Lastly, for those hoping to see the theatrical versions of the original trilogy on Blu-ray because of this deal may be disappointed.  Distribution rights to the first six movies still belongs to Fox.

One final note that I found sadly ironic (and marginally funny), the production of the new movie Noah written and directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Russell Crowe, Emma Watson, Anthony Hopkins, and Jennifer Connelly, was delayed from flooding due to Hurricane Sandy.

Here's a link to my Cloud Atlas review. If you get a chance to see this film, I strongly recommend it.

Until next month.

  1. Eyes rolling at that costume. Will they light it up like in Tron Legacy ? It will be HARD to fill up Peter Weller's shoes.

Anyway, sick and tired of reboots (except the good ones) and remakes. T5 ??!!? Arrgghh.

In 2 hours, leaving home to go see......Cloud Atlas. Mondays off are so cool.

  3. With Arnold as old as he is they can pull a great King Conan movie. I'm hopeful.

  4. I really want Idris Elba to be Bond, failing that some other agent of some kind. Or a superhero.

  6. Robocop, Conan, T5... ugh!

    X-Men with Brian Singer? Yay!!!
But what do you mean Wolverine is no longer considered canon? They'll put things in the other movies that contradict it? It seemed to fit in very well with the original trilogy...
Wasn't great, I know, but I'll always be fond of it 'cause I saw Hugh Jackman with his huge sideburns standing next to his motorcycle on the side of a forest road in New Zealand when they were about to film the motorcycle chase (and barn explosion). ;o)

Star Wars 7 in 2015 seems too soon for me, specially against those films. Put it back a year and get Joss Whedon in the chair!!! :p

JD I finally saw the Cloud Atlas trailer in the cinema on Sunday... but still not clear what it's about! I just might have to read the book first to be sure I can understand it.

  7. I'd love to see Idris Elba as Bond, but I fear he may already be too old. Craig is signed up for another two films so by the time the role becomes available Idris will be 45-6. I've also read that he isn't interested in taking the role because he doesn't want to be labelled as the 'Black Bond'.
