This Week: Sherlock Season Four—Mr. Mercedes—Hannibal Season Two—Knights of Badassdom—This Week in Casts—Book Titles—Superhero Roundup—This Week in Cats

Sherlock Season Four

According to some spotty sources, including Yahoo UK, The Sun, and some guy riding one of those red double-decker buses to Trafalgar Square, the fourth season of Sherlock will premiere around Christmas of this year. That’s right, this year: 2014. Because no matter how many times I write “2013,” it remains true that time, tide, and TV wait for no woman.

Mr. Mercedes

Speaking of upcoming things, here’s one that is more certain: Stephen King has a new novel coming out on June 3! According to the blurb, Mr. Mercedes is “a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, [in which] three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.”

I have to admit that the blurb is a bit of a letdown; Mr. Mercedes sounds more like what I think of as his throw-away novels (like Cell) than his Late Style novels like Under the Dome or 11/22/63. And yet I’ll buy it the day it comes out and stay up all night reading it anyway.

Hannibal Season Two

NBC has released a promo video for the second season of Hannibal, which begins on February 28th. If you haven’t finished the first season yet, please do not watch the video!

Knights of Badassdom

All that is so exciting that I want to add yet another upcoming event to your calendar. Knights of Badassdom finally has a release date: February 11th for download and On Demand. Knights of Badassdom is soon-to-be-cult movie about role-players who accidentally conjure up some real magic. It stars Peter Dinklage, Ryan Kwanten, and Summer Glau.

Knights of Badassdom has been about-to-be-released for at least a year, possibly longer. That it is only being released in a few theaters and then On Demand and for download in the doldrums season of movie premieres tells me that the studio has no faith in its quality. And yet I think it sounds perfect in a so-bad-it's-good way.

This Week In Casts

Rick Cosnett, who played Dr. Wes Maxfield on The Vampire Diaries has joined the cast of Arrow-spinoff The Flash.

• Since his drama pilot about the Vatican didn’t get picked up by Showtime (the only bad part of Pope Francis's tenure so far), Kyle Chandler has been cast in an upcoming Netflix series about a “family of adult siblings whose secrets and scars come to light with the return of their black-sheep brother” from the creators of Damages.

Jeffrey Tambor will guest-star in an episode of Arrested Development co-star Will Arnett’s new sitcom The Millers.

Jason Isaacs (Awake) will co-star in the upcoming NBC remake of Rosemary’s Baby that has no reason for existing and is a terrible idea.

Book Titles

A friend sent me a link to this page from the Mighty God King website (which I had never heard of). It is a list of book covers with the titles changed to more usefully explanatory statements. For instance:

I recommend clicking on the link to enjoy the full list, which is hilarious.

Superhero Roundup

Watchmen author Alan Moore got brutally honest during an interview with Slovobooks this week, reiterating his view (previously expressed last year) that our current superhero craze might be “culturally catastrophic.” He continues: “It looks to me very much like a significant section of the public, having given up on attempting to understand the reality they are actually living in, have instead reasoned that they might at least be able to comprehend the sprawling, meaningless, but at-least-still-finite 'universes' presented by DC or Marvel Comics.” The Guardian has excerpts from the interview available here.

If you’re totally comfortable ignoring Alan Moore’s dire prediction that we’re ruining the world by enjoying his creations and the genre he favors, then you’ll be happy to know that Warner Bros. has signed a three-picture deal with Gal Gadot, the actress cast as the titular character in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. In addition to that film, Gadot will play Ms. Woman in the Justice League movie as well as the upcoming Batman/Superman film.

This Week in Cats

Watch to at least the middle for the cat. (Also fun for people who don’t love cats.)

  1. I'd love a Wonder Woman movie..there's been so many false starts that I've nearly given up hope. New Sherlock this year? Yeah, right.Isn't everyone involved too busy with other things?

  2. Rosemary's Baby? Really? I would love for Isaacs to find something that is worth watching and that he could stick with for a while.

  3. What ChrisB said. I'm currently reading the Jackson Brodie novels and imagining Jason Isaacs in them as I go.

The Wonder Woman revamp just seems to be cursed. They had Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy, and fired him. They did a TV pilot that sucked. I'm all for getting a female superhero launched, but maybe they should take the hint and drop the whole idea.

  4. Wonder Woman is cursed because no one can compare to Lynda Carter in the role. Literally no actress in Hollywood today has her combination of statuesque figure, beauty, warmth, and athleticism. That anorexic actress cast to play her in the Superman/Batman movie must be some kind of sick joke.

Time to give up on Wonder Woman; when they made Ms. Carter, they broke the mold.

  5. I'm hopeful for Gal Gadot because for one thing, she was actually a bona fide soldier in the IDF, so you know she's got the chops to throw down. And anybody can bulk up for a role.

The movie Christian Bale did before Batman Begins was The Machinist. He weighed like 100 lbs in that movie! And then he bulked back up and then some for Batman. I think he did all that in like 6 months or something too.

At least, I really hope she bulks up. I've always liked when artists draw Wonder Woman muscular, and it always feels off when she's depicted as some twiggy supermodel.

  6. I don't have anything personal against Gal Gadot. But she's very skinny and I'm quite skeptical about her "bulking up" (which is not something Hollywood actresses normally do - quite the opposite, in fact). Other than being a little taller, she looks a lot like Keira Knightley to me, and no one in their right mind would cast KK as Wonder Woman (or so I hope). But to be honest, a Batman vs. Superman movie sounds like such a stupid idea anyway that I doubt she can make it much worse. And who knows, she might be good. Stranger things have happened.

But she's still no Lynda Carter. :op
