I’m not surprised, but the Avengers has already hit 1 billion dollars internationally (or at least it is on track to hit that number this weekend). When it does, it will set the record for the fastest film ever to reach that marker, and will only be the sixth Marvel film to ever reach that kind of box office.
Roman Polanski was just voted out of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscar people) finally after several decades. This comes on the heels of Bill Cosby's and Harvey Weinstein’s expulsions in recent months. The biggest difference between Polanski and the other two is that his case is very old, and the Academy has already awarded him their highest directing honor even after he fled to another country to avoid charges of statutory rape.
Allison Mack is in trouble. The former Smallville star is apparently about to face charges for her part in the NXIVM cult for sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and conspiracy to commit forced labor. If found guilty, she could spend up to 15 years in a federal prison, or possibly even life. She is currently out on bond and under house arrest.
I’m not sure why MoviePass keeps hitting the news, but there were two stories that grabbed my attention this week. The first is an odd choice to limit their new customers to a plan where they could only see four movies a month (as opposed to a movie a day), and would also require a three month commitment. Now this has already been revised back to the month to month unlimited option (although the rule to limit customers to one viewing per movie remains). Meanwhile their direct rival, Sinemias, has broadened their options and now offers a new annual subscription plan with an equivalent monthly cost of $4.99 a month for a ticket a month, or $6.99 for two a month. Which admittedly doesn’t sound as appealing, but they do offer the ability to book in advance, pick any movie in any theater on any date, and allows for IMAX and 3D, which MoviePass does not.
In really exciting classic Doctor Who news, the BBC Studios America and Fathom Events has announced that a newly remastered version of Genesis of the Daleks (which will run about 90 minutes) will get a one-night theatrical release on June 11 in over 750 theaters worldwide. This is one of the few serials I’ve seen of classic Who, and it was brilliant. So it’s really cool we’re getting this important piece of Doctor Who history shown in such a big way.

J.J. Abrams has just teamed up with Julius Avery to produce a subversive superhero film called The Heavy.
The Handmaid’s Tale and Westworld were both renewed for a third season.
Not sure if this qualifies as good news, but Hasbro has just acquired the rights to the Power Rangers franchise from Saban. This is really a massive unknown, especially for the recent movie reboot.
The Sabrina the Teenage Witch reboot finally has a title: it will be called the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (the producers must hate reviewers who have to type titles in again and again).
In a semi-odd move, Entertainment Weekly reported that another character is exiting Arrow at the end of season 6 (Thea left earlier this season). I won’t say who it is here for spoiler reasons, but follow the link if you want to find out.
The new Warner Bros.’ streaming service for all things DC related will be called DC Universe and they announced their first series for the service, an adaptation of the Swamp Thing comic. It is likely to debut in 2019.
Movie Releases for May, 4 2018
Movies actually came out this week, not sure if anyone actually went to go see them since the 1 billion pound gorilla is still sitting on the couch.
Overboard - A remake of the 1987 film starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell (why oh why did someone think remaking that stinker would be a good idea). This one stars Anna Faris, and is about a rich yacht owner who is thrown overboard by a mistreated former employee, the difference? The gender roles are reversed… yay?
Tully - A dramedy starring Charlize Theron and Mackenzie Davis about a woman who is gifted a nanny by her brother to help with her three children, and ends up forming a special bond with her.
Bad Samaritan - Horror/thriller about a couple of thieves who break into a house and find a woman held captive there. Starring David Tennant and Kerry Condon.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I can't decide if that's a nice title or a terrible one. Then again, I didn't watch the original and perhaps this title fits with the mood of the show.
ReplyDeleteRe: Allison Mack. So bizarre. I do feel for the young woman who was brainwashed several years ago by Keith Raniere, but brainwashed or not, she did what she did and there is no excuse. I'm at least happy that she is willing to make a deal. First stories that I read said that the women of the group were plotting to take the fall for Raniere.
Also:
"Mack herself was arrested and charged in April and was released on a $5 million bond, (...). That bond was provided by her mother, who has remained supportive over the course of the proceedings."
