The sad man, behind Batfleck eyes
Batman gets a winged foe, the Mouse might catch the Fox, The Crow dies again, Atari crawls from the grave, The Walking Dead might just have to die, the Library of Congress gets a collection from Geppi, Rick and Morty will be back with a lot more, Chloe is in major trouble, Roseanne is dead long live Darlene, Doctor Strange is a real life superhero and more!

Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) is currently helming the standalone Batman movie that Warner Bros. has been developing since Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Originally Batfleck was going to write and direct the film, with Deathstroke as the main villain. Then Affleck left the director/writer chair and that went to Matt Reeves. Now it looks like Affleck is stepping away altogether, and Reeves is going in his own direction with the Penguin as the main villain. The character could also appear in the upcoming Harley Quinn led Birds of Prey film (along with Batgirl, Huntress, and Black Canary).

The takeover of Fox by the House of Mouse is just around the corner, with a shareholder vote coming on July 10th that will determine whether Disney's offer will be successful, or if the door will remain open for the rival bid from Comcast who has an all cash offer ready to go for nearly 54 Billion dollars (and yes, that was with a B). I really hope Disney gets it, because otherwise Comcast will have control of an actual cable network and movie house. They already have too much power as it is (well, so does Disney, but they are far less vile).

It’s been a long time since the last Crow sequel movie (thank god), but rumors have persisted that it was going to be resurrected (see what I did there). Most recently Jason Momoa and director Corin Hardy signed onto the Crow reboot project which signaled that it was starting to build steam. Sadly, both have now left the project without citing exact reasons for the split. Momoa was especially upset by the choice, since he’s been a fan of the comic and waited eight years to play what he called a dream role.

Have you heard about the Atari VCS (me neither until today, and I'm a gamer with all three current gen systems). It’s their new upcoming video game console coming out possibly next year. They just put out pre-orders for the equipment which may be jumping the gun because we still have no idea how powerful it is, what exactly will be offered on it (beyond the library of classic Atari games and more modern Atari titles) but we do know how much the preorder currently costs: $299.

If you hadn’t heard the news about Lauren Cohan’s shortened contract for the upcoming Season 9 of The Walking Dead, well, I have more bad news for you. Apparently Andrew Lincoln is stepping away as well, with a very similar contract for Season 9 with both characters being phased out next season. The current rumor is that Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) will take over as the leads for the second half of the season, and potentially a season 10. While I love both characters, I don't know if the show can survive any more major losses, especially not Rick and Maggie.

The Library of Congress just received a massive collection of comics and comic book memorabilia from an entertainment museum (Geppi’s Entertainment Museum) that just closed down in Baltimore, Maryland. The collection of over three thousand items included not just rare and vintage comic books, but also original art, photos, posters, newspapers, buttons, pins, badges, and even storyboards of an early Mickey Mouse film. It’s easy to forget that even our pulp media has a rich and diverse history, and it’s not the first time that the Library of Congress has accepted a collection like this one, since it currently holds more than 140,000 issues of comics dating back to the 1930’s.

The much beloved cartoon Rick and Morty has been sitting in limbo for a long time now, with delays for it's next season pushing it's release back for at least a year. Now it looks like the delays were good news, since the series was just renewed for 70 episodes (no word on exactly how many seasons that will be). I’ve never watched the show myself, but several of my friends are big fans who are very excited about this.

In a follow up to the Allison Mack story I mentioned before, the former Smallville actress has now admitted to physically branding some of the women that joined the cult. The symbol for the NXIVM cult is a mixture of the cult leader’s initials and her own. At first when this story broke I was almost in denial about her actions, but the more news that comes out about it makes it sound like she really deserves to go behind bars for a long time.

John Goodman seems a bit ambivalent about the cancellation of the series Roseanne. He has said he wasn’t following the news that closely and hasn’t looked at the offending tweet (which Roseanne has since taken down) and has stated that he isn’t upset by the prospect of losing out on an Emmy since he hadn’t won one for the entire run of the original series. Of course rumors are already circulating about a potential spin off (those ratings were too impressive to ignore) focusing on Darlene. The current problem might be a legal one, with no one really knowing how much of the Roseanne property is actually owned by Roseanne, who created the character and served as executive producer. John Goodman has expressed an interest in the returning, and Sara Gilbert (Darlene) said that she was deeply disappointed by Roseanne’s tweet, and that it didn’t reflect herself or any of her other co-workers.

Finally in a case of life imitating art, actor Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, Sherlock) jumped out of his Uber recently and saved a delivery driver from being mugged by four men. When asked about it, Cumberbatch said, “I did it out of, well, I had to, you know…” Perhaps playing a superhero rubs off, but this one does get a little more bizarre since the incident took place around the corner from the real Baker Street where his Sherlock character lives.

Jennifer Garner is back with an action/revenge film called Peppermint, about a woman whose family is taken from her.

Bits:

General Zod (the classic villain from Superman II) is running for office, well, at least as a write in candidate for the Ontario Premier (seriously, how bad are the other guys when Zod is a better choice?) It started as a joke campaign when a Toronto resident created the sign and put it on his lawn, but it has started appearing on other lawns and it's actually gaining some traction. Honestly, General Zod was a megalomaniac... but at least all he wanted was for you to kneel before him.

Heathers, a TV series remake of the 1988 movie starring Christian Slater and Winona Ryder has been kicked to the curb by the Paramount Network even though it had already been renewed for a season 2. It is currently being shopped around to other networks.

Legion was renewed for a Season 3 by FX. Which is not really all that surprising given that it is doing well ratings wise and it is a critical success as well.

You may have noticed the small change in the title of this article. Yes, I’ll see you all in two weeks. Or maybe every other month. Whatever.

Samantha M. Quinn spends most of her time in front of a computer typing away at one thing or another; when she has free time, she enjoys pretty much anything science fiction or fantasy-related.

  1. Kneel before Zod! :)

Wow. Allison Mack. I had actually considered doing a partial Smallville rewatch, but I don't think I'll ever be able to look at her again.

As much as I love Daryl and Carol, I think AMC should close up shop on The Walking Dead.

Your best Doux News ever, J.D.

  2. The Walking Dead really does need to end now while there are still enough people left who will actually miss it.

Allison Mack has pretty much ruined Smallville for future generations. Not that I expected future generations to ever watch Smallville. Did it really only end seven years ago? Feels like it was fifteen.

  3. I'm still in the denial phase with the Allison Mack stuff. I just can't believe the woman who portrayed such a wonderful and admirable character on screen may be responsible for such reprehensible actions in real life. Chloe was the reason I kept watching the series through to the end, even when she was only a semi-presence in the final season. That's a ten-year legacy down the drain. I can only hope she was led down this path because she was brainwashed by an even worse person. Either way she deserves to be punished, if she is indeed guilty. I assume Kristen Kreuk isn't party to any of these accusations, since she's the only who introduced Allison to the organization in the first place?

I'd like to think a re-watch of Smallville could happen again at some point, but it would require such a huge amount of compartmentalization on my part to enjoy it and root for Chloe in the same way I did before. I'm not sure I'd be able for that.

  4. Funny thing about the Action Point movie: it's actually based on a real place that is very close to where I grew up! It's called Action Park, and was one of the first waterparks in the nation. They also had six deaths and countless injuries. Apparently, you never left the park without some part of you bleeding.
