What area of the world do you live in, and what do you do in real life? (Because we all know you don't make any money doing this.)
I live in Poughkeepsie, NY. I am a student, although that doesn't make me any money, for obvious reasons. I do a bunch of volunteer stuff, but none of that makes me money either. Actually, the only thing I do that makes me any money (not a ton) is teaching Latin to homeschooled students once a week.
What show or shows are you covering for Doux Reviews? Why those particular shows?
I am currently writing reviews of Star Trek: Enterprise. Once Star Trek: Discovery starts back up in January, I will be covering that as well. My reason for this is that I love Star Trek. Always have, always will. Even Enterprise, though if it's not hard to love at times I don't know what is.
Which TV character do you identify with the most, and why?
This one was really hard to answer, especially since I identify with different characters for different aspects of myself. Interestingly enough, the character that's coming to mind is Barry Allen from The Flash. Like him, I enjoy life and just being alive. I struggle to provide leadership even as I find myself having to lead more and more. I often feel the weight of the many responsibilities being placed on me as I continue through my life, and I miss the times when all I had to do was enjoy being alive. I feel mostly capable of meeting the responsibilities placed on me most of the time, but they pile up and overwhelm me at times.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and how would you use it?
I'm boring. I want to fly. Yes, I know I could make myself 'fly' if I had telekinesis. I don't care. I want to fly, under my own power, entirely freely. I think if I could fly, I would probably use it mostly for practical purposes, but I'd wish I could use it for relaxation more often. Like Samaritan in the first issue of Astro City (definitely go pick that up if you've never read it), but to a lesser extent since, you know, I'm not Superman.
What's your favorite television show of all time? (Okay, top few will do if you can't narrow it down to one.)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. No contest.
What is your favorite reality show, and why?
Probably The Amazing Race. It's a lot of fun to watch, and the host never really annoys me.(*looks pointedly at Jeff Probst*). I'd love to participate in it someday.
Marvel or DC?
I am a fan of DC Comics' characters, stories, and worlds, more than those of Marvel. However, DC has completely forgotten how to use their characters, stories, and worlds, and Marvel has that down to a science. As the popular comic book industry slowly dies out, I hope DC gets things figured out; I'd hate to lose the wonderful material they have created and could create again.
Cats or dogs? Or is there some other animal involved?
I am allergic to both cats and dogs, though it really only bothers me if I sleep in a house with such pets. As such, I have very little preference, and it really comes down to the individual animal. Cats are kind of better targets for making fun of, though.
What random skill would our readers be surprised to know you have?
Um... I can recite all of the prepositions in the English language in alphabetical order, in about a minute. I very much doubt people would guess that I can do that.
What is your most wished for holiday gift?
Probably some new board game I haven't played, or an expansion I don't know. I love board games, and I'm always looking for more to enjoy and learn. My favorite is 7 Wonders, for all three of the board game nerds reading this.
Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Another thing that may help give some perspective to my reviews is that I am an aspiring filmmaker/screenwriter. This means I will analyze thing others might not, and I also might approach an analysis in a different way. For example, I pay a lot of attention to the way things are lit, the camera angles and the way it moves, and the framing of each shot, because these are all things the director and the cinematographer will have taken a great deal of care about. I will also specially note the opening scenes of a story, the introduction of each character, and the effect the ending is engineered to produce in the audience because all of these things will be good clues as to what the screenwriter was thinking. Just something that might help you as you think about what I'm saying in my reviews.
Latin. I'm impressed. :) I used to work with very old rare books that were in Latin and thought seriously about taking a class. Never got to it.

Oh, and if anyone's wondering where 'CoramDeo' comes from, it's the last part of my own personal Latin motto: "Omnia nihil est, sed esse coram Deo." It means "All is nothing, but to be face-to-face with God."
ReplyDeleteI don't know what I loved more. The fact that you speak Latin, can recite all the prepositions, or that you picked Barry Allen. I may like to review Arrow slightly more than The Flash, but I adore Barry and stand in awe of his ability to be hopeful in the face of all the tragedy he's suffered.
