About Us: Mikey Heinrich

Next up is one of our semi-new writers, Mikey Heinrich!

What area of the world do you live in, and what do you do in real life? (Because we all know you don't make any money doing this.)

I live in Brooklyn Center, MN, which is a Northwest suburb of Minneapolis with Roy, my partner of 19 years. By day I’m a mild mannered employee of public television. You’re welcome for Downton Abbey. Sorry again about Matthew. On nights and weekends I’m a Firefighter. In Octobers I give ghost and grave tours while dressed as Deadly Do-Right, Spirit of Canadian Vengeance, and as scheduled I appear in murder mystery shows at the local haunted caves.

Sleep is for losers.

What show or shows are you covering for Doux Reviews? Why those particular shows?

Currently I review DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger. I ended up a reviewer for the site because of a call out for someone to review Legends, which I really love. More so every year, actually. There’s great LGBTQ representation, they’ve really embraced their ridiculousness in a fun way, and Nick Zano ain’t hard to look at. It’s one of very few shows that I make an effort to watch as it broadcasts instead of waiting for DVR. As for Cloak and Dagger, they were one of my favorite comic books as a kid (I still have every single appearance they made prior to 1990 in my basement.)

Which TV character do you identify with the most, and why?

I’d love to be able to say The Doctor, but that’s sadly not remotely true. I’d have to say either Caitlin Snow from Flash or Ianto Jones from Torchwood. They both have a similar outsider vibe in their peer group of, ‘We like you, be we don’t really understand you.’ Which is the space I tend to occupy.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and how would you use it?

I’d go with the ability to psychically understand why people are doing the things they do. It would be incredibly useful in knowing how to respond to unpredictable behavior.

What's your favorite television show of all time? (Okay, top few will do if you can't narrow it down to one.)

Doctor Who, hands down. Since I was ten or so. I used to watch it on public television on Friday and Saturday nights back in the mid-80s

What is your favorite reality show, and why?

Not a huge fan of them to be honest, but I do like Face Off, because I think the makeup stuff they do is cool, and it’s pleasant to watch people on a competition helping each other and generally not being awful.

Marvel or DC?

I go both ways. I mean... Oh crap... not like... Dangit, Roy’s going to have so many questions...

Cats or dogs? Or is there some other animal involved?

Dogs, without question. We have three. Jake– a Border Collie/Blue Heeler (we call him a Border Healer), Drew– a black lab, and Sylvester– an Aussie. I’m kind of cat-indifferent.

What random skill would our readers be surprised to know you have?

I can light a match from a matchbook one handed. This skill comes in handy far less since I quit smoking ten years ago and am now far too old to hang out in bars, in which you can no longer smoke in any case. It’s a party trick that’s encountered triple-obsolescence.

What is your most wished for holiday gift?

For people to stop complaining about Jodie Whittaker being the Doctor online, and for the people who are upset about that to either find something productive to do with their lives instead or fall from a great height onto something pointy.

Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?

The acceleration lane is for you to reach the equivalent speed of the other vehicles on the freeway. You should never stop on the acceleration lane for any reason as that is unsafe and defeats its purpose. Merging from the acceleration lane onto the freeway should be done at the very end of the acceleration lane and should be done ‘zipper’ style, alternating with traffic already on the freeway.

Thank you for letting me get that off of my chest.

  1. Lol, Mikey. As I may have mentioned before, you always make me laugh.

  2. How DARE you have dogs and not include their pictures. HOW DARE YOU SIR. I'm so happy to be finding other dog people!!! I was alone on this site with only cat lovers for all too long. Not that I don't love and appreciate cat lovers and cats. I just felt misunderstood.

Nick Zano, really? Brandon Routh is right there.

  3. Oh, Mikey,

In honor of Elseworlds. "Think Bigger!" Why go with psychically understanding people when it's so obvious you need to expand your psychic abilities to influence drivers everywhere. Use those powers for good!

And yes they definitely need to fall on something pointy!

  4. I accept the rebuke :) I don't have a picture of all three of them, and didn't want to pick one and show favoritism. They're very sensitive :)

Brandon Roth doesn't do a lot for me, to be honest. Just a type thing I guess. This is a good thing, as it means we can work together to stalk them without a conflict of interest.

Dog lovers unite! I misread that as 'skirts' instead of shirts, and now I think we should get skirts.

I'm afraid if I expand my psychic powers that I'd be about an hour and a half away from going full 'Scanners'

  5. "Deadly Do-Right, Spirit of Canadian Vengeance"

    I love it!

I assume that, being Canadian, it is a very polite style of vengeance.

  6. It's the most polite form of vengeance available. Mostly it involves finding people who are not pure of heart and then breaking into their homes at night to leave a sternly worded note.

  7. Could you please come to Maryland and teach people how to drive?

Particularly if there IS NO acceleration (merge) lane, and instead there is a BIG RED YIELD SIGN....

Tell them that a yield sign is for, well, yielding...which sometimes means STOP if there are cars flying by and you can't get in...too many people here think you're supposed to take your chances and merge, despite the sign specifically telling you to YIELD, dammit!

(blinking red lights screw everyone up as well)

I'm enjoying getting to know the new-Doux writers, and getting reacquainted with everyone else. This site has such a wonderfully varied group!

  8. This was such a fun read. I'm having a great time getting to know more of everyone. And I also prefer Nick Zano.

    Sleep is for losers.

Oh, how I wish I had more time to be a loser. Sleeping is my favorite activity in life. (:
