Legion is back and I still have no clue what's going on.
This episode was not kind to new viewers. It wasn't kind to old viewers either, but at least I had enough familiarity to spot and understand some references. But the first twenty minutes before the first commercial break really just threw us into the deep end and expected us to swim, which I honestly expect at this point. Legion starts weird, gets weirder, and sometimes you figure some things out along the way.
More than anything, I think that the goal of this episode was to introduce our new major player, Switch. I really liked her. There was this interesting mixture of both vulnerability and strength to her that was really appealing. She didn't hesitate when she saw David die. She immediately acted to save his life, not once but twice. And she faced down Farouk while barely batting an eye.
Beyond Switch's character, I'm super intrigued by the idea of time travel. It fits surprisingly well into the existing feel and lore of Legion, so I'm excited to see what the show does with it. The laughing demon was incredibly creepy, even though we only saw it for a few moments. Or maybe it was because we only saw it for a few moments. I'm also curious about the voice on the tape. Farouk said that only women can be time travelers, but the voice on the tape was male. So who is the voice?
And why does David want a time traveler? He said that he didn't want to go back to fix mistakes or get the girl, so why? I don't think it was so that he could have an early warning system; he was absolutely certain that no one hostile would be able to find him. I'm sure that we won't find out the full plan for at least another four episodes, but it's still fun to wonder and theorize.
I think what surprised me most about this episode is that David was still cast in a largely heroic light. At the very least, he wasn't an outright villain. Sure, he was pretty obviously manipulating the people in his cult, but we never actually saw him do anything that I would consider "evil." After the end of last season, I expected to see full super villain, but we didn't get that.
Who are the heroes of this story? Is it David? Is it Syd? Neither? I was incredibly shocked both times David killed Kerry without so much blinking an eye, but at the same time, she was also there to kill him. Our traditional heroes showed up unprovoked to kill David and attack the cult. And they had no issue adding Switch to the kill list, despite the fact that they know nothing about her and despite the fact that she's largely innocent in all of this. She's currently on David's team, so that's enough to seal her fate. These aren't the actions of a traditional hero.
It makes it very difficult to know who to root for. At this point, the only person that I really want to succeed is Switch. She's interesting and has a cool ability and her first instinct is to save a stranger. Maybe that's why we got an episode dedicated to introducing her as a character. We need someone to root for.
Random Thoughts
Weirdest Image of the Episode: That giant pig. I don't know what was up with that and I don't want to know.
Not going to lie, I totally forgot what happened to Ptomony last season for a few minutes.
I love how this show takes ridiculous things seriously. Of course people use actual hooks to pull people out of the way.
