Five Franchises That Didn't Know When to Quit

Someone once said that it is better to burn out than fade away. If only the producers in charge of these franchises had heeded that advice. So much pain and suffering could've been so easily avoided.

HIGHLANDER

There can be only one. There really should've been only one. The original film ended in such a way that didn't leave the door open for a sequel, but that didn't stop them from trying. The result was Highlander II: The Quickening, a film so tremendously bad it should've left the franchise dead for all time. If only we were so lucky. Instead more sequels followed, each more terrible than the one that came before it. The last was Highlander: The Source in 2007. Since then there have been repeated attempts to reboot the franchise with a remake of the original. Let us hope none of them ever succeeds.

TERMINATOR

Hollywood just won't leave this one well enough alone. They keep trying to restart the franchise with increasingly dire results. Another attempt, Dark Fate, is due out in November, this time with Linda Hamilton returning as Sarah Connor and James Cameron producing. Will it success where all the others have failed? Maybe. I mean, it can't possibly be any worse than the last one, right?

Right?

ALIEN

Another franchise that should've stopped with Cameron. David Fincher's Alien 3 left a really bad taste in everyone's mouth, Alien Resurrection was just an absolute mess, and Ridley Scott's prequels get more forgettable with each instalment. And don’t get me started on the Alien vs Predator movies. Speaking of Predator...

PREDATOR

Even Schwarzenegger knew better than to return to this franchise and he said yes to Junior, Batman & Robin, Terminator Genisys, and three Expendables movies. THREE!!!!

HARRY POTTER

After The Cursed Child and The Crimes of Grindelwald, fans are pretty much at the point now where they will actually pay J.K. Rowling to not write anymore Harry Potter stories.

  1. Sort of agree with Highlander and Harry Potter.

    Terminator I'm on the fence.

I still love every new Alien and Predator film. Big fan of those here.

  2. Honestly, I'm hard pressed to think of any franchises that produced more than two or three really good films.

  3. Magritte, I think the MCU has done pretty good. As long as you like the genre. Out of 23 files only about 4-6 are just ehh. Same with the X-men Franchise, though they have a larger ratio of stinkers to hits. The Bond Franchise and the Mission Impossible series have done pretty well too. The Toy Story franchise has had four back to back hits.

So it is possible to keep milking a franchise. It's just hit or miss, with a lot more misses than hits.

  4. Aliens is much better than Alien 3, but Alien 3 is much better than people give it credit for being. Agree about Alien Resurrection, though - it became horrible, rather than terrible.

Alien versus Predator had a memorable ending, at least.

“After The Cruse Child…” should be “After The Cursed Child…”
