"The most dangerous question of all... What If?"
So that's where Captain Carver has been! Just when I was wondering if we would get to see her this season or not.
Not only did we get to catch up with Peggy, but we also got to see Kahhori, an adult Byrdie the Duck, and Goddess of Thunder Storm. As much as I love Peggy and Kahhori, Storm was the one I was the most excited to see. I still can't believe that we have mutants in the MCU in general, and Storm was always one of my favorites. She didn't disappoint here either.
Byrdie was fine, I guess? Her wings materializing in and out were cool. I think I might just be predisposed to dislike her because of her parents.
There were a lot of little details that enjoyed, like how the foosball table was full of different tables and the different categories that Byrdie had when she tried to break into the Fifth Dimension. It gave me Ludicrous Speed vibes. It was nice to see Nebula from the Nova Corps again, and I can't even fault their plan to go find an Infinity Ultron. He was the only entity known to be powerful enough for them to get where they need to be.
The execution was simply... meh.
This episode was the shortest one of the season, and it felt like it. Excluding the end credits, it was less than 25 minutes long. And since it's the first half of a two-parter, we really only got set up. All of the really interesting stuff happened off-screen.
I'm assuming that the reason why Infinity Ultron talked about what happened instead of us actually seeing Ultron and Peggy talk before being attacked by the Watchers is budgetary. I can't think of another reason why they would handle it like that, especially since any 'deception' that Ultron had attacked Peggy lasted all of 30 seconds.
We also spent almost no time with the Watchers. The Eminence voicing the opening credits (and the changes made there) was a very good touch, and I had hoped that we would get more of that, that he would continue to step into that role and give us narration throughout. Not having that felt like a missed opportunity.
But like I said, this was only the first half. Hopefully, all of this setup means that the finale can get right to the good stuff.
Random Thoughts
If the Watchers are supposed to protect the sanctity of the multiverse, then why were they letting the TVA prune realities in order to protect the Sacred Timeline? Was that ever addressed?
So, Byrdie is voiced by Natasha Lyonne, who is also playing an undisclosed role in the new Fantastic Four movie. Could she be playing Byrdie in that?

I enjoyed the team aspect of this one but it did feel a little weird that fully half of it was characters we’ve never met (and they weren’t even variations of characters we’d met either). Storm worked a lot better for me than Birdie (who was fine but just is a new character without any development— and I say this as someone who really enjoyed the Howard/Darcy romp episode) both due to preexisting investment and how good Allison Sealy-Smith’s vocal performance was.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite scene was the calm before the storm with her and Captain Carter at night — even though we’d never spent any time with this pairing before, their performances really sold their relationship and the weight of the moment.
